  • we got married here in 1999 it was a fantastic place and beautiful we went to book it again today and the travel agent said it had burnt down we was gutted as we were looking forward to going again :(

  • i stayed here many years ago and it was beautiful ! its very sad to see what has happened :-( i have fond memories of staying here. hope they restore it to its former self x

  • ya'll should see it noww!!! its even worst than these pictures :S

  • Appears someone made a lot of money with letting this historic place ROT , and then Burn. Who in the government made out with this tragedy, or are they not even looking into it ? Maybe the Insurance Company will investigate and not pay the Claim. This is just so, so suspicious . AND CONVIENIENT .

  • My wife and I spent our Honeymoon at Sam Lords Castle in 1978, it was beautiful and well kept.We loved it. Today I was online looking to send my son who is getting married in October on his honeymoon to Sam Lords Castle. Imagine my shock and disgust that this historic, beautiful ,serene place was left to deteriorate and then burn. I find it awfully suspicious that it was left to rot and then burn. And after reading a lot about Barbados is does not surprise me this happened. WHO SET THE FIRE ?

  • yo this is fucked up

  • How very sad, it was such a wonderful old building.

  • Sam Lord's Castle burned on Oct. 20, 2010. By then the building was already destroyed from weather and neglect. The roof went up in a blaze at 4:30pm. By the morning of Oct. 21, the fire had worked its way down to the basement beams. Nearly all wood was burned. The front stone/concrete transom over the entry steps is at least 50% damaged or destroyed.

  • It hurt my heart to see the destruction of my beloved country and to know that the government should have done more to help keep Sam lords Castle going ,the many jobs and tourism to this country is very important .O what a shame O what a shame.

when will the government of this beautiful blessed country put the people first and stop thinking about their pockets and power it about time that we all wake up and fight for this beloved country if not we will regret it. jenny Boston

  • ALL BURNT DOWN NOW...

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS DOCUMENTARY. Sadly, your production was "prophetic" when is ended with GOODBYE! Today, I read the news that a fire has destroyed the building.

I regret the loss, not only to your nation of Barbados, but also to the Caribbean region. My condolences.

Let us hope and pray that lessons have been learnt, and that good will come from out of the ashes of an ever too familiar and recurring story in our Caribbean so filled with its very rich heritage. patricia e. green

  • I glad it gone. They will be able to build a much better development and put Bajans back to work.

  • 2010, need to add the epilogue, Andy - flames shooting skyward. The Castle burns while CLICO and the B'dos Govt play the fiddle.

  • 2010. Look like somebody bun-um-down.

  • I was there not to long ago.

It pains me to see the state that its in.

But yet, its a bitter-sweet feel to it. Abandoned buildings and forgotten places give me a ton of instillation. It makes me sad, but yet full of ideas.

Now some idiot burned it down. I would love to see how badly it is. Because Sam Lord's Castle is a part of my many visits here in my childhood.

I hope its not too bad, and I hope people aren't guarding there.

  • i have very fond child hood memories of Sam Lord's Castle. My parents were members there and we use to use the facilities and have Sunday lunch there often. I did a walk through there less than a week ago and to see the desecration of such lavish historic property is gut wrenching, i actually felt like i could cry! Meanwhile the people responsible for its demise continue to live lavish having a hard time to figure out which luxury car to drive today or which mansion to spend the night!!!

  • There back in 97 and now looks like this, deeply touched and very sad.My then girl friend Gloria and I had so many good times there.Terrible situation

  • This is disgraceful. Myself & children had many happy visits to Sam Lords Castle when they were children well over 10 years ago. Those crooks responsible should be held to account for their parts in the demise of this beautiful property.

  • My wife & I spent our honeymoon there in 1989. The gardens were stunning, and the service was 5 star. We ate in formal dress in that historic dining room that now lies in desolation. The pits of our stomachs fell as we watched this. We found this as we were planning to return.

    Shame on the mis-managers!

  • that is so sad! I was there for a vacation in the early 84 and it was so beautiful and peaceful. I seriously thought about returning to live there. Its a horrible loss for the people of Barbados!

  • This is awful:(

I went there back in the late 80's and it was gorgeous. I always said I want to go live in Barbados, the people were great, and the island is just spectacular.

  • Back in 1967, I got a discreet peek at the castle from a respectable distance. I was so in love with this beautiful mansion. Later, I learned it was a resort ... what in the hell happened?

  • I went there about a year ago with my friends to check it out and its just so bad that a beautiful building in now old remains of what is usta be.

I heard crane is going to buy it and renovate it but i doubt that will ever happen..

  • :( this is so sad...put a lump in my throat. fond childhood memories of fantastic holiday's I can't believe a place so beautiful has been left to get into that state. so sad. will never forget my amazing holidays in sam lords... xxx

  • My husband and I were married in Sam Lord's Castle in 1991. We have beautiful photos of the inside of the castle and the gardens outside. How tragic to see this video of this historic landmark today. Shame on the company that now owns it and all of Barbados!

  • @ctmarshall

If you are on facebook, you may like to share some of your photos on the Sam Lord's Castle page, started recently after the Castle caught afire. You can also see my video of some images of the tragic fire.

  • wow i was there yesterday early morning and took some video shots i will post it soon within the month. It's crazy how you can let a precious thing get destroyed

  • I stayed there in 1973 as a kid. As a travel agent in the mid 80's I booked many people there. Always wanted to return. Great food back then. Rooms were comfortable. Some sight seeing it now.

  • UNBELIEVABLE

  • I personnaly have never stayed at sam lords however my parents stayed at sam lords the first time they ever went to barbados and told me how great it was..... since then they have been 40 odd times. Last holiday we went to see the state of sam lords and even i was upset to see it like this, and i'm 15 and have never been before, i cant emagine what its like for you guys! GOOD NEWS THOUGH.... it has been bought to be restored and rebuilt however it may take some time to start on it! Its Barbados!

  • *never been to samlords we are in barbados now! :)

  • What an absoulte shame and horror show that this could have happened to a place so beautiful and opulant and HISTORICAL!

My wife and I honeymooned there in 1981 and it was like we FOUND HEAVEN.

It was so alive and lush and the friendliest place on earth.

We could not wait to get back but $ being what it was we were hoping on our 20th anniversary to get back.

Then I googled and youtubed and saw what was happening.

    Now this??

    How? Why? SHAME!

The Govt. should have stepped in to prevent this!

  • Barbados gov wont do anything. if they did it would still take too long and too much money. It took them until this year to finish re-tarmacing the highway and it was due to finish for the cricket world cup in barbados......... now so many years have past!!!!

  • JimHorelimaging,

This is very sad. I have done several hotel photoshoots of Sam Lord's Castle over the years and it was a Very beautiful place.

  • jimhotelimaging,

This is very sad. I have done several photoshoots of Sam Lords Castle over the years and it was a georgous place.

  • How sad! My daughter and I were guests there in 1990. The estate was beautiful! CLICO Holdings Barbados, LTD. should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen.

  • It saddens me to see this video. I was there in June of 1990 and hoped to take my kids there someday. My favorite place on the property was the pool where the rays would come in when the high tide rolled in.

  • My wife and I had our honeymoon there 10 years ago and its sad to see what has happened since. We will always have fond memories of what a nice place it was. Hopefully it has some better times ahead.

  • How sad, we had our honeymoon in 2000 and was hoping to return there for our 10 year anniversary. Let hope somebody can rescue this beautiful place in time for our 15 year instead.

  • Very sad. Like many others who have commented, my wife and I first visited Sam Lord's on our honeymoon - back in 1983. I remember her describing it as "our paradise". She passed away a few years ago, and these photographs would have broken her heart, as they have mine. I just don't see how people could have let this happen.

  • My wife and I got married on the beach at Sam Lords in 2000, I've often wondered why there have been no references in holiday brochures over the last few years, now I understand why. It was a beautiful place, perfect beach. Just cannot understand why the hotel and resort has been left to decay, such a shame. I was thinking about going back to Barbados on my 10th anniversary to visit the place were we tied the knot, but obviously not an option now, it would be too upsetting.

  • The structure has gone nowhere, the foundation is still there, the land is still there, why should anyone be ashamed?,because foreigners are not enjoying it. The government should take it and turn it into a post secondary school, a community college for the people.

  • I got married at Sam Lords Castle 12 years ago and the setting made it the ideal place. Seeing this is heartbreaking! Cant believe that this is the same place that's in all of our wedding photos. Unforgivable.

  • i went in there today and everything u took i saw today the poker mat was there too! and a microwave outside and then the big pool by the bar and everything so i guess u took these pics recently

  • I married my husband here 9 years ago and it was a unfortgetable holiday !! We wanted to return next year but such a shame its ended up this way.

    So Sad !!!

  • still a good piece of real estate. wondered how come the Credit unions there never bought this. its a great piece of real estate. having a billion sitting down doing nothing helps no one.right. lol love those bats.

    V

  • How very sad, we had three wonderful vacations there back when Marriott owned Sam Lord's. At that time we were told that it was the Marriott family's favourite property, so it was a big surprise to us when they sold it.

  • This is what happens when there is a lack of tradition and pride and "MONEY" is the ultimate goal.

  • I am speechless!

  • The people of Barbados and their govermnent should be ashamed of the demise of Sam Lord's Castle.Shame on all of you for this narrow minded indifferent approach to the history of your island. You make me sick.

  • Barbados should be ashamed of itself.

Their narrow mined view of their island history is amazing ! What a group of no-class citizens. To say nothing of their goverment. They all deserve each other, for destroying a culture that was worthwhile and replacing it with the another casino or worse. Do not try to put the blame for the demise of Sam Lord's Castle on any one other than yourselves. It was your history and it was yours to preserve.

  • This is so sad. I remember going there as a child on a school tour...I can't believe Barbados allowed this to happen!! Sam Lords Castle is in our history books....do something!!!

  • This was always the first place in Barbados you had to visit as a tourist. What I just watdhed was a complete disgrace. one of the world's best know tourist attractions reduced to rubble. We would never let that happen in England.

  • Wakefield House should also be looked at as this is another one of the properties which they took over and was in good condition at the time..... never too late to restore or rebuilt look at Sunbury unfortunately it will unlikely be a Bajan.... BUT I look forward to seeing Sam Lord's Castle Rise Again we had Wonderful times there as Teenagers!!!

  • OMG...so horrible. Why do these things happen?

  • I went into the castle about a month ago, the famous french plaster work is all collapsing due to water leaking in through the roof, vandals have stolen parts of the mahogany stair rails. The only resident in the castle are the bats and their faeces. The fine pitch pine floors are beginning to buckle from the sauration, but the structure is still sound. Perhaps the government could make a move to at least seal the building from water penetration, which will soon destroy what is left.

  • Curiously I ask, who is to BLAME for the disrepair of Daphne Joseph Hackett and Empire Theatres?

  • I am not shock shocked , we as bajans allow these things to happen , Leroy Parris behaves this way because we allow it ...he and his soldiers at clico are only about money , they dont care about barbados or what is important to us, the great dollar and how much more he cant get from us poor people !

  • Hope should never forgotten.

Sam Lord's Castle will rise again .

During the last few year there was bad Financail move made on behalf of Clico. However ,the company have done a lot for the country.People only look at failure ,but they never look at progress.

  • If clico was not in the predicament that it is in presently, would anyone have noticed the stat of this castle? Surely this dilapidation occurred over time! The blame game should not be the issue here but the solution to rectify should be! As President Obama stated "We should learn from our past, not be trapped by it" (5th Summit of Americas)

  • if these billionaire brainaics had any brains, they would:

    1. right off the property and donate the land and hotel to the National Trust.

    2. its got to be at least a 100 million right off, which inevitably might save their company from going into receivership.

    3. perhaps then the few of us who are interesting in protecting Barbados architecture could get together and plan a restoration of one our treasures.

speaking of treasure. has anyone found samlords yet?!

  • :( I hate to see historic treasures that are foundational to our heritage be destroyed like that - either pure neglect or deliberate demolition... it should never happen... I hope they don't decide to tear down the building eventually... that would just be sad.

  • What a terrible shame. The government should never allow this to happen to one of Barbados beautiful National Treasures. So so sad.

  • So sad.

  • I absolutely agree. Be it as it may we all know that it will be a long time before anything is done as it is not priority. and when it does get all done and beautiful again very few will be able to see it because it will be part of an exclusive hotel or something like that. It should belong to the people.

  • Clico has certainly not done any favours for Sam Lords but the decay was really in progress under the Grant stewardship. They should both be ashamed.

    Claus

  • Shocking is truly the only word to describe what I just saw. As a Bajan it is heartbreaking to see that we have allowed this to happen. Government should be ashamed that they have stood by and let this historic house slip through their hands.

Needless to say Leroy Parris is a greedy ass and will never fix Sam Lord's, I hope Buhbadosboy lets his dog crap all over his yard, better yet throw it at his front door!

  • Thought that Clico was nearly finished re-building Sam Lord's WHAT A SHAME ! DAT LEROY PARRIS IS A REAL DOG >>>ONe day I was walking my dog and happened to pass his house un-beknownst to me and he shouted at me that he would cUt oFF MY LEGS if i walk on his lad land again ...a piece of land besides his house with no fence and no sign ! What a SOB !!

  • Such a disgrace! We were on our honeymoon there 40 years ago, and thought it was the most beautiful and romantic place in the world!

    Bill and Sally Murray

  • I live in Barbados and I am absolutely shocked at what I am seeing.

Notwithstanding, Government's responsibility to protect such treasures, what about the Barbados National Trust were they asleep while this neglect occured? It must have taken years to reach the state we are seeing.

But most of all don't the officers of CLICO have a conscience?

    Disgusting.

  • Great Video I feel the same way about the environment!
