I sort of feel like I should've been like everyone else and lived it up because I'm still not free. I know that's not how it is but that's how I feel.
I'm pretty much homeless aside from living with my folks. It's a lot of pressure because I feel guilty for having to mooch off of them. I'm 25 years old and have had very little sucess in keeping a job for more than 6 months at a time. I recently graduated from a vocational school and that hasn't helped at all. Anyway, I try to at least earn my way by taxiing my family around town because I'm the only other driver with a license besides my dad. I'm fixing to become a taxi driver.

Another way to find money is to (without being too obvious) look for change that has fallen out of people's pockets in parking lots as they get their keys out of their pockets. Really!! In a large parking lot ... you could probably find a couple of dollars in nickels and dimes that have fallen out of pockets at the driver's side door area. Not that I spend my days doing this...
I lived in my my car in Santa Monica for a while, it obviously was a horrible way to live. I give this guy a lot of credit because psychologically he seems pretty good. I got to the point where I just couldn't take it anymore and moved back to the east coast. The recession doesn't seem to be as bad here as it is Socal. This guy seems like a good dude, that'll work in his advantage when he meets someone willing to give him an opportunity.

@Crimble67 That's probably the biggest problem with young Californians finding jobs. A lot of them are probably facing tough competition from illegal immigrant workers from Mexico and other central American countries.
It sounds like he and I were brought up similar. I've always had to bust ass to get whatever I needed/wanted and still do. Looking back, I've never regretted it either; it tends to build ones character and hardiness to manage and endure the myriad trials of life when they arrive.

They do make books on wild edible plants for most areas. Imagine a costless food source and all you need to buy is the seasoning. One of the best sources is dandelions which are great for salads and have great health benefits. Get yourself one bowl that you can use for all your meals and very light utensils. In fact the best bet is to look into ultralight backpacking for inspiration on the best ways to survive.
George, this young man is not frugle enough to consider getting a good cooler and putting food in it. Get a Coleman gas stove and some used pots and pans and some can food and pasta. Gees, what will they eat when there is no convenient food? I guess hunting is out of the question. But I understand his depression may be getting the best of his survival skills.

When my friend Don in Ohio told me he was picking up cans to get one dollar per day and that was his only income and he is a gardener and takes care of a handicapped guy and cuts grass for the city, this scared me. Scavengers.

I was living out of my car at 18 with my now exhusband, it sucks, at least Cali is warm (vs ON Can). If I were this kid I would go up into the Azusa Canyon area that is open to the pulic for gold prospecting and start panning for gold. At the current prices it would start to pay off.

It is the failure of families that cause this. Too many kids are forced to work for their own food, clothes, and transportation so they have no time for school. It is a parent's responsibility to help kids atleast get through high school.

This is all unfortunate. At least this guy is recycling. This country needs so much work done. Instead of the government handing out food stamps and unemployment for people sitting on their ass. They should have to go out and clean up trash, remove graffiti, scrape gum off of sidewalks etc. The country would look a whole lot nicer and the tax payer would get something for his or her money. Also: suggest that they do volunteer work. If you are out there volunteering, it shows you are ambitious and you meet people you might not always get to meet. You are also helping your community and you will hear about jobs opening up before other people would. Think of it as a stepping stone.
Also: other avenues: post ads at stores, ie: Safeway, or any Health food stores..they should have bulletin boards..they can put their contact info on there. Some church's will also let you post ads you are looking for work/housing. There is more, let me come back with the info.
George: tell him to go find a farmhand/ranch job. If you go to feed stores, I think you can post on a board or they might have people who put ads up there they are looking for field and farm hands. The farm hands get housing and food, in exchange you do lots of work (I used to work on a horse farm). This helps alot, having housing and food and a job to keep you busy, too. People need to seriously think outside of the box.
Also in Vegas where I live, people are digging in our recycle bins for weeks but the community called the police and they were all arrested. Don't know if thats a good thing lol

Another way to find money is to (without being too obvious) look for change that has fallen out of people's pockets in parking lots as they get their keys out of their pockets. Really!! In a large parking lot ... you could probably find a couple of dollars in nickels and dimes that have fallen out of pockets at the driver's side door area. Not that I spend my days doing this...

I lived in my my car in Santa Monica for a while, it obviously was a horrible way to live. I give this guy a lot of credit because psychologically he seems pretty good. I got to the point where I just couldn't take it anymore and moved back to the east coast. The recession doesn't seem to be as bad here as it is Socal. This guy seems like a good dude, that'll work in his advantage when he meets someone willing to give him an opportunity.

They do make books on wild edible plants for most areas. Imagine a costless food source and all you need to buy is the seasoning. One of the best sources is dandelions which are great for salads and have great health benefits. Get yourself one bowl that you can use for all your meals and very light utensils. In fact the best bet is to look into ultralight backpacking for inspiration on the best ways to survive.

Yeah, the West Coast thing, well I was only there twice, and the first time was during Helter Skelter and the second time was to elope, so I never got it except I loved driving up to Bodega Bay and eating oysters, which are now all toxic. Dave, you're a real man, there should be more men like you. I dont know if there are still caretaker type jobs anymore but you would be perfect for that. I was living out of my car at 18 with my now exhusband, it sucks, at least Cali is warm (vs ON Can). I wish I had some wisdom for you but so much has changed in the 20 yrs since I was in your shoes I dont think any of it would apply. All I can say is you have my respect and your sister is a lucky woman to have you looking out for her.

His family did not help him nor his sister atleast graduate from high school. With university grads looking for work, why would a company hire less?
It is the failure of families that cause this. Too many kids are forced to work for their own food, clothes, and transportation so they have no time for school. It is a parent's responsibility to help kids atleast get through high school.
He is very well spoken. Perhaps the military is a good option with a GED.

This is all unfortunate. At least this guy is recycling. This country needs so much work done. Instead of the government handing out food stamps and unemployment for people sitting on their ass. They should have to go out and clean up trash, remove graffiti, scrape gum off of sidewalks etc. The country would look a whole lot nicer and the tax payer would get something for his or her money. We're in an era where kids are only taught to play video games and text on cell phones.

Also: suggest that they do volunteer work. If you are out there volunteering, it shows you are ambitious and you meet people you might not always get to meet. You are also helping your community and you will hear about jobs opening up before other people would. Think of it as a stepping stone.

Also: other avenues: post ads at stores, ie: Safeway, or any Health food stores..they should have bulletin boards..they can put their contact info on there. Some church's will also let you post ads you are looking for work/housing. There is more, let me come back with the info.

George: tell him to go find a farmhand/ranch job. If you go to feed stores, I think you can post on a board or they might have people who put ads up there they are looking for field and farm hands. The farm hands get housing and food, in exchange you do lots of work (I used to work on a horse farm). This helps alot, having housing and food and a job to keep you busy, too. People need to seriously think outside of the box.

@charlesfuchs Yeah, the "government" doesn't like competition. It is against the law to recycle from a recycle bin. However, once you put your trash bin out to the curb, it becomes public property and "they" (the government) or any1, can go through ur trash & spy on u.

Medical supplies. ibuprofen is a must, Vitamins too.
Ammo is what sucks, it's way too expensive now, if you can find it.
