  • SO MANY ACCIDENTALS! WHOOP CLARINETS!XD

  • props to this band for the best video of this piece i've found yet. And go horns!!

  • lol look at what your fucked up U.S. music education is doing to you! There is so much criticism about this performance just because it is band music! And most of the crticism is absolute bullshit! Seriously there is so much more you could say about popular music these days -- especially live popular music -- but why don't you bother?? Elitism is what it is -- and it causes people to have low efficacy for music (i.e. 'i'm not musical like that')

and its a god damn PIECE not a SONG.

  • The director is taking this song way too fast in the begining it's supposed to be legato

  • @jimmy642163 legato isn't a tempo marking

  • In my school band, I'm stuck playing the lowest part for the trombone. Which is fine, I play it better than most anyway.

  • @BRV6969 Director's rarely get strength on those low parts - thanks for being there and playing out!

  • We're learning this in my high school band, right now. :D Glad I finally know how it's SUPPOSED to sound. lol

  • RIGHT ON!!! lol I'm playing Flute II too!!!! XD

  • I'm playing this at my school( middle school)

  • There could have been a little more form the bass instruments, especially bass clarinets, and low double reeds, if you have them. I love this song

  • man that timp roll is a bitch =D but it's an awesome song

  • out of tune flutes in the beginning

    or just one.

    it stuck out

good job though, i suggest watching the video response!

  • they really were out of tune

  • @SuperCliquegirlz i think its just the recording making it sound like that

  • I love this song..Were playing it for our concert this year at Waterford

  • Go trumpets!!! I play trumpet... :)

  • What memories! We played this in high school in 1978.

  • the clarinet duo thing could of been a little louder in the beginning i think. actually. . .same around H, which i think is around 2:35 ish 3:00. . .can't hear them that well.

  • I'm a freshman and Play tuba, My high school band is playing this song and two others for state, I honestly think we sound better? Just my view I guess...

  • Buccholz?

  • played this for middle school and got 12 in Texas MMS!!!

  • The beginning isn't very good at all.

  • what do u mean??? i think this is pretty good..

  • your right, the beginning is perfect, that's how it's meant to be...

^trumpet soloist for rochdale concert band (were playing this piece)

  • im playing yhis song in my middle school honor sandiego 2009

  • Oh i played this years ago(1997). I went to a music camp and played it. I have grown very fondly of it. A very very very very very goooooood job guys!!!!!

  • I personally like one better. We played two in seventh grade and one in eighth. This one's more complex and layered, whereas the first one is boring...

  • haha i love this song

  • could I get a copy of the flute part for this?????? I have been searching for years!!!!

  • Wonderful .... we played this last year but not as good as that ! Exellent :) I played on 2nd flute and the melody is awsome .. keep it up

  • Our band is playing this, love it. :D

  • our band is playing this at the heritage music festeval in Toronto

  • ok that beggining went way to fast

  • just a tad but, but the accelerando's and decelerando's were dead on.

  • wow this is awesome! my band is also working on this for our winter concert. i'm on 2nd flute too! i love it! :)

  • lmfao I played bari sax in this particular honor band under the direction of Dr. Good :)

  • Awesome! You guys sound great! My band is working on this song for our winter concert; its such a cool song!

  • this is my favorite piece of music for a high school band of all time. i love it.

  • That was a great job. played this a few years ago. Wonderful piece of music. Fantastic horn part.

  • Ohhh, nice sound and really even better beefy low brass sound!!!

  • Omg, you guys are really good.

I'm currently playing it this year. I think its a fun piece to play. =D

  • OMG!! amazing!! i am currently playing C&SD II and we are definetly not as good as this. (at least you have some decent trumpets....) i play first clarinet and every one else in my section is sooooooo off key and it's soooooooo annoying....anyway, EXCELLENT JOB YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING!!!!!!

  • finally! the original and not the second. sounds so much better!

  • Oh my gosh! This is the best band song ever! I played C&SD II in 8th grade, then played this version my senior year so I cry almost everytime I hear it. WOO PICCOLO...I actually hated the piccolo but whatever.

  • i preformed this too, we rocked it WOO, as did you guys grats

  • zomg. you sound a hell of a lot better than when my hs band did it. eek. haha. beautiful playing (:

  • we played part 2 my junior year in high school. I love this song!

  • I was under the direction of Jay Thomas Gaffney at the time when I played this at Garber High in Essexville Mich. I believe we had about 90 members in our symphonic at the time. We won that year and I think it was this song. This band has done an awesome job compared to some others on here. good flutes rock but so does strong deep brass. balance is key when it comes to magic. well done well done

  • WOW this brings back so many memories, the Texas All State Band played this piece in 2004. I just have a few suggestions, slow the beginning; would make for a better dynamic change. Also throughout the entire piece, there are SEVERAL tuning problems, that can be fixed by allowing only 1 person to play. For the most part it was a great listen, woodwinds just make sure that your fingers move together and that you listen to one another. A retard end would help overall good FLUTES ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • were playing this piece next thursday and i play clarinet 1 and the solo and i feel that clarinet soloist slurred some parts that were not supposed to be slurred. awesome ending woodwinds bravo! i think conductor could of slowed it down a little in the ending just like its written to make the conclusion more dramatic, but over all its was pretty good ;]

  • they did a good job. i play baritone and i am playing the high school version. the trombone legato part is good(3:15). our trombone players suck. it sounded like baritone was playing it too.

  • actually were playing this in middle school and we do sound pretty good. ;)

  • there are 2 pieces, one for high school and one for middle school, earlier this year, my band went on tour and watched another band play the watered down version, it was good and my band teacher thought we should try to play the high school version...it's pretty tough and you guys did a good job

  • Everyone that called this a song is retarted because it is a piece it does not have lyrics therefore is not a song... it wasn't rushed at the begining... and a good job over all

  • he stoped way to much in the rehersal yeah and he also directs sorta weird i didnt like it

  • yay!

I was in this, fun song actually.

but I was not a fan of Dr. Good's directing, he stoped WAY too many times during rehersal.

  • Haha wow, I'm glad that people that were in this song are actually finding this video. xD Kinda funny too.

  • @rebelluvr Thats because people werent getting it right. The director hears it all. Shoot we played this also and took it to state and got a one. Ill bet Jay Gaffney stopped and screamed at least a thousand times over the two or three months we had to prepare. We knew why, and were disciplined. Thats why we applied ourselves and did so well.

  • geez dude, that begining was really rushed.... We're playing this, we take it much slower. I play first alto. =) Flute needs to play out a bit more on the duet with the alto. And timps are a little loud on that part, whoever is playing them needs to blend with the ensemble more during that section.

  • My band played this composition this year and there is NO WAY a middle school could do it WELL. This group I feel did well. I would have to say though that the beg. was a little rushed not their fault but the directors. Brass had some minor tuning issues and I feel they were too covered up in some areas, play out more! But overall nice job! When it hits (I think) the 6/8 section brass needs to play out. Trumpets and snare drum need to play that part LOUD at the end. The ending was GREAT!

  • Well I'm in middle school at Memorial Middle School in Harlingen Texas, and this is the version we're playing. It's not perfect but you know for 8th and 7th graders I think we're doing good but idk I hope we can like post this up and you can tell me how we sound. This is our state year. So from one music love to another. Wish us luck

  • you started way to fast at the beging measures 1-23. I could barely hear the flute solo while playing with the sax. Good job at not speeding up. I personally thought that the brass was way to loader than the woodwinds. And measure 218 to the end kind of sounded a little jammbled up. But i really enjoy hearing you play it it was good.

  • but congrats nonetheless, you guys played this piece better than we did. nice french horn section!

  • yea, unsupportive tubas. but you have to be a pretty dang good tuba player to play this piece well. its not too fast, close to what we played it at. And for gothicgirl, a middle school could not play this song! maybe the chorale and shaker dance II, which is a simplified version. if you did play the original, i really want to hear a recording of that. haha

  • my middle school band is playing this. And we sound a lot better. this brass section was weak, and it's W*Y to fast. SLOW DOWN! TAKE PAUSES WHEN YOU SHOULD!

  • there's a different, easier, more watered-down piece written for middle school. you're most likely playing that one. this piece is written for high school and up.

  • Actually, we were playing the high school one, not the Chorale & Shaker Dance II.

  • oh, no not you! you guys sound wonderful! haha i was talking to a 6th grader who thought she sounded much better than you.

  • whats with cocky middle school kids?

  • who's cocky here?

  • the people who comment this vid.

  • such as yourself...

  • Burn!

  • lolll thumbs down

i see your head steph :]

  • Very nicely played.

If i have to comment about something..i guess the only thing would be the tubas are a little weak... It's not a really BIG thing, just something to add to it. And i think the whole song is taken a little too fast. Otherwise...it's perfect =)

Good luck w/ the rest of the year.

  • that snare part around T could be brought out a lot more.

    it was wonderful.

  • fantastic job! this is by far not the easiest piece in the world, but unlike a lot of high schools, these guys nailed it. im very impressed!

  • toooo fassstt

    way too fast

u dont have time to enjoy the music

measure 12 too much low brass, not enough high

  • I agree, much to fast for the inrto.

    the timpini needs lighter mallets.

the rolls are very choppy, but the accents are brought out rather well, its a hard part, a lot of mallet switching involved, crazy dynamics to.

as well as the snare, very difficult. the call and reply at G is wonderful.

    overall great job.

  • Nice sound

  • My band is playing this song at cocert festival.

    It is wonderful!

  • darn its not even a dance.

  • id dance to it......hahah

  • lol i was kidding..this is my friends vid.
