Whats with the canoes on the roof? Wouldn't it be better to get rid of them so the centre of gravity is lower?

Yes it would but each truck is given a "scale" score. And accessories like the canoe are worth points in that "scale" score. However, the trade off is that if your truck was scored with the canoe, it has to run the trail with the canoe.

there is a company with them out now that makes warn look alikes and it runs off of a high torque motor incased in plastic, but you could always use a servo take out the thing that stops it from rotating 360° then hook it up to a switch on your remote.

It would be to touchy, reason being is a Gas R/C needs high RPM's to have good power and torque. The problem there would be speed. Unless you geared it really well it just wouldn't work well.
