This is actually 100X easier if you use a flash light for the majority of the ligthing, and a speedlight for effects. This way you reduce the chance of getting those hot spots where the stobe reflects off of the car. However, using only a speed light, if done correctly, looks a better.
Have you tried this with a black or very dark car? Silver is one of the best colors to photograph because it doesn't show speculars nor reflections as bad as other, darker colors.
Do you say "speedlight" instead of flash because you think it makes you sound like you know something? I know you use a speedlight but this old technique can be used with any flash...
sorry for being so critical, but honestly, the same picture could have been taken 2 hours earlier in the day with no flash and you would have the exact result.. too much of you surrounding is flooded with the light and keeps the attention from the car, sure if you are stuck shooting a car at night this would work, but most people who shoot cars at night with a flash do it for a dramatic affect where the background is darkened or at sunset, but the car has dramatic highlights you dont see at nite
Nagyon szep kepek! Nincsen egy site vagy valami ahol meglehetne nezni a tobbi kepeidet is engem nagyon erdekelne mivel en is ezzel foglalkozom :) Kulonben hasznos a a video tanultam belole!
Why the higher ISO? why not stick to 100 to squeeze every grain of quality out of the shoot? especially seeing as you have full control over the lighting...
the 430ex can be used in ettl or manual mode. what the he meant was that he put the flash in manual and set it to 1/1 (full power) and used a diffusion panel to soften up the light a bit (do a search for bounce cards and you will get an idea) hope tha helps.
what if i dont have a speed light? can i use a flashlight, similar to a painting with light idea?

I tried this with a navy car and it picks up too many reflections of the flash. Any tips on preventing the reflections?

Good video though, I learnt a lot... =)
Coedy 2 years ago
because you have a really short time to lighten the car , and a bit more distance what the speedlite can handle it.
Zeke99751 2 years ago
@Zeke99751 So, why not open the flash up to 1/8 and drop the ISO to 100 - you'll get the same exposure, with less noise.

sure you can go with 15", but 30 secs gives you more time to do a good job with the flasgun ..
you don't need photoshop for this effect ..
marindomjan 2 years ago
so u do pop the flash the whole time in those 30" or can you take a photo thats like 15" and take more photos then edited them in photoshop

war02svt 2 years ago
Flash is at full power, and the bouncer's function should be rather apparent from its shape. It directs stray light from the flash onto the subject.
Also you can use Auto Focus, if you use a flashlight to shine on the car to allow the AF system to lock, then turn off the light,.
