European royals should continue dressing themselves in the Elizabethan fashion. So beautiful and colourful clothes, not the hideous suits and old lady dresses they wear nowadays.

@montrosestag 'By the time she died if you know your history you uneducated moron England was the richest most powefull country in Europe ' - richest? France, Spain and even Holland were all richer at the time of her death. England (or rather, Britain) only became the leading economy after the seven years war (1763 onwards). It only became the most powerful after the defeat of Napoleon in 1815. I know this because unlike you I have a first class degree in 18 & 19th century British history. Cock.
@montrosestag Just to put your ignorance into perspective, at the time of her death, 80% of all the gold entering europe (and 50% of all national holdings) belonged to Spain. The largest merchant navy (i.e. trade) belonged to Holland. Frances population was 3 times that of England, it's army was TEN TIMES the size. Englands empire consisted of Ireland and a few strips of land in north america. Spains was dozens of times larger. Even Holland had a larger empire. So....read a book you buffoon.
While Chinese's Cixi is very stupid in her later years, be fooled by the other gays, therefore, lost her all kingdom , plus her ancestor's. :) Women can do two extremes,--the very best like Elizabeth I, and the very worst like Zixi later Queen of Manchu Chinese Empire. She is fool and cruel women too. Many Chinese actually dislike them a lot before they got troubles. Therefore, foreigners even got a lot local helps. :) Or , how can they win and take advantage?
Why Queen Elizabeth II's husband also named as Phillip then? Fortunately, those Greeks are not that ambitious as Spanish , or, she will also refuse him. :) The UK family . :) Never ever will be mastered by nobody minded. :)
By breaking every bound with history the director was able to make his both films about Elizabeth so strong. What would it be without Babington shooting at her? With Francis Drake as the most important admiral and not a handsome ruffian? Who would watch an elderly Elizabeth wit rotten teeth, foul breath and an ugly wig? Or what would this scene be when you know that only guards were armed and no ambassador would ever talk in such a manner to the king/queen? It would be BORING !!
@Katykool1265@ryanhhcheung the queen of jhansi in india had loved her kingdom as much as elizabeth did :) oh and she was much kinder then Elizabeth.....It is of no consequence whether or not Jhansi loved her kingdom more or less than Elizabeth. It certainly matters not one bit to an Englishman.....You have your heros,we have ours
@Komnenit .You seem to forget that the British ended whatever pretensions of empire that Spain possessed at Trafalgar. The combined Franco-Spanish force was obliteratered and Napoleon's Conquest of Egypt ended .The Royal navy controlled the worlds seaways for the next 150years,including the Mediterranean, right on the doorstep of both the French and the Spanish. Spain's victories over the English were few and far between
This entire scene is fantastic not just becouse of Cate Blanchett but I think the ambassador's sentence too. It's intelligent, and extremly couragous. I bow before the writer of the script.
You all forget to see the great english defeat at Cartagena de Indias in 1741!
Biggest english armada in the world defeated by only 3000 spanish and 600 amerindian archers!
The Armada Invencible in 1588 was defeated by the weather not by England. In the other hand, the spanish DID defeat the english in 1589 (Contraarmada, Cádiz) and in 1741: Cartagena de Indias.
@Sdiurax And there in lay the tit-for-tat-trivia of Anglo-Hispanic relations. Even today Spanish speakers check on my indigenous background with a little poke. Oh how we laughed! The English just wanted to be accepted... they were boat people who were escaping the threat of foreign invasion to other lands and were treated as invaders, undermined, scorned, hated and thrown out of many countries. Imagine if the Commonwealth of Nations threw out every Indian citizen today?
Whose side is God on, he can't decide? no ones ? Phillip II thought God would be on his side but the Armada failed. The repulse of Spanish naval might gave heart to the Protestant cause across Europe, and the belief that God was behind Protestant cause was shown by striking of commemorative medals that bore the inscription," He blew with His winds, and they were scattered". But the U.S. in 1776 thought God was with Washington against Britain. Everyone claims God's on their side.
I love the Visual Imagery in this scene, you can see she's the only one wearing colour in the room, as well as when she's speaking to the Spanish ambassador she has light coming out of her chest.
@ryanhhcheung That is perhaps one of the greatest differences and similarities between Elisabeth and her Mary. Both were deeply passionate, and committed to their respective beliefs. Whilst Mary's passion and commitment lay in her faith, the Catholic church, Elisabeth's lay in her country, England.
I'm spaniard and I must admit that technically speaking this movie is amazing, the script is great, the performances are stunning but the way they changed history, making it like a english propaganda, against Spain made me sick....
@NickRiviera10 yeah i didn't like the way they portrayed the Spanish either. would have been better if they portrayed king philip in a better light, just an equal player in the game of intrigue, war and contest of the sinews of nations than some goblin like creature with a murderous religious zeal. Still some of us know better and at least it's not as bad as in 300 where the persians are portrayed as demons. Still a entertaining movie to watch.
It's sad that our last government (Labour) ruined our country. We owned the world 'The Empire' and it was a beautiful place: 'the sun never sets on the Empire'. I think that in the UK's attempt to be modern, we lost all of our qualities. Now we have drunk people everywhere, babies growing up with a potty mouth and no hope of pride. I honestly want to move. England sucks now.
@PandaPawSmile The British Empire was a 'beautiful place' for the privileged few, but not for the vast majority either in the colonies or in Britain itself. Seeing that history through rose tinted specs does not make it any more glorious. It sowed the seeds of the very multiculturalism that *certain people* nowadays hate so much. No single country has a right to own the planet; by divide & conquer, divide & rule - something Britain & other Western European countries spent 5 centuries doing.
@TraffordReds9 Don't mean any disrespect but you need to study history a bit harder instead of cherry picking allowing your biased opinion to cloud your judgement. Nothing in life is black and white and neither is British history which on balance was a force for good in the world. Don't fall into the ways of the uneducated and view the past by today's standards, times change just as morals and what is acceptable does.
@Meremockermoo Excusing your patronising tone for a second, I HAVE studied history & I've studied Colonialism. While there certainly were benefits to some from Imperialism (corrupt elites i.e Amin) it certainly wasn't beneficial for a great many others. Carving up an entire continent, across pre-existing borders, throwing disparate/diferent cultures together, divide and rule = irreparable damage. Looking at it from a purely Eurocentric perspective = very short-sighted.
@PandaPawSmile And governments of all persuasions have been screwing this country over for the last 30 years. So don't kid yourself into thinking all the bad stuff only started happening 13 years ago. The UK isn't that bad in any case, in comparison to many other countries. (Stop reading the Sun & Daily Fail).
This scene is absolutly spine tingling perfect. Cant stop watching it. Goes to show what little todays royals do. I highly doubt youd see the queen to something like this. She accomplished so much in her lifetime where as todays queen has hardly accomplished anything. Shes a miserable old cow and hardly goes out among "her" people. I think this centuries royalty are abit over rated.
@ghurter Point me to another woman over 80 works as hard as the current queen does, between the charities she heads, the charities she doesn't head but is deeply involved with, her tours of overseas, the state opening of parliament, touring the British Isles as she does regularly, her role as figure-head and a rallying point for the British people, how many people rally round David Cameron, Tony Blair or Gordon Brown when the country goes to sh*t, these royals are better, they're more grounded.
@ghurter If you don't want these comments don't express an opinion, you see that one can work both ways.
Now about the queen, again tell me of another person her age who does as much as she does, you see when you get to certain age you retire and take it easy, she's been working the same amount since before she was Queen and is expected to do so until she's dead or otherwise unable to fulfill her duties.
And sh does more than just travel she's a huge source of income for the nation.
@ghurter The current queen does not have the opportunity to command her people. She has, realistically, little power now, in some ways for the better some for worse. People nowadays believe that you should work to get where you are, so naturally the royal family is losing respect because the common people don't think someone should be deemed worthy to rule simply due to their ancestry.
@Kafudanapar Yes but, that's so untrue. They work just as hard as any 'commoner'. As Generalscorpio said, Her Majesty works 24 hours, 7 days a week at the age of 90, without a rest hardly (apart to play on her Wii). She's an inspiration to the British people, and when they did a server in early 2011, her popularity was 77% give or take. THe British people (majority) love the royals as they should do. David Cameron, Tony Blair, etc, they all run the country, but they pass -- the Queen is forever.
@PandaPawSmile It's not untrue, the Royals may work hard and have some influence on today's society, but they do not have any real power. They do not make the laws or policies of England or any other country because what the people want is a democracy, not a chosen leader. So yes, the Queen uses her influence over people for good and the people respect her for that, but she cannot decide what is right for her country anymore. A Queen is forever, but her power has long since faded.
although it is a powerfful thing the whole sword part, no foreigners were allowed to carry weapons around her majesty due the repeated attempts on her life so kind of incorrect. How amazing is Cate she radiates power in this scene
Elizabeth I: Tell Philip, I fear neither him, nor his priests, nor his armies.Tell him if he wants to shake his little fist at us, we're ready to give him such a bite he'll wish he'd kept his hands in his pockets!
Spanish Ambassador: You see a leaf fall and you think you know which way the wind blows. Well, there is a wind coming, Madame... that will sweep away your pride!
Elizabeth I: I too can command the wind, Sir! I have a hurricane in me that will strip Spain bare if you dare to try me!
brilliant the way the lines are delivered by both the queen and the ambassador when he says "madame" but it is the awkwardness captured at 1:52 through the end that gives this scene the status of ingenuity!
I love how, when the Ambassador is talking, Elizabeth is grinning, thinking "What an idiot." and then he says "to your royal bed", and she instantely goes into defense and awesomeness!
I love this scene so much, Cate was amazing as my favourite Queen! :D
1741: Battle of Cartagena de Indias(a massive amphibious military engagement):
Kingdom of Spain: Admiral Blas de Lezo 4000 soldiers+shore-based guns + 6 ships of line.
Great Britain: Admiral Edward Vernon 27400 soldiers, + Lawrence Washington (half-brother of future United States President George Washington) 4000 soldiers +186 ships(29 ships of line).
We used to give the little Spanish gutter rats a good hiding from time to time but they became too weak after all the good hidings we gave them and robbed them bare.So we decided to beat up the French instead afterwards :)
@repn87 Well, my fav roles include of course Elizabeth, Notes On A Scandal, I'm Not There (where she plays Bob Dylan), The Aviator and I'm specially in love with her role in Little Fish! But I'm a fan of hers, so probably everysingle performance of her I find remarkable!
@repn87 I get your point. The whole movie is pseudo bombastic (if not completely) so I guess that had an impact in her performance as well. Even though I think she is terrific here, I respect your opinion and understand what you mean. What is your favourite role of hers?
@Rendorseg88 like i said just wikipedia it, as i have done with the spanish empire, and i can certainly say the british empire was the biggest empire known to mankind, with a 1/4 of the worlds land surface, t's a well known historical fact.
@Rendorseg88 corection, India, the WHOLE of eastern africa, cannada, Jamaica, the majority of the caribean, Tibet, Hongkong, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iraq, Omen, Yemen, Malaysia, Nigeria, Ireland, Burma, Falkland islands, Papa new guinea oh and many more (wikipedia it), now that is what i call the largest empire ever known to mankind.
@AshesXBlood Biggest empire regarding extension was the Mongolian Empire. The longest was the Byzantine Empire. But most historicians still points out the Roman Empire as the biggest empire ever because of the influence on the rest of the world.
@linegenrou Well, the sources I have say that the British Empire was the biggest empire ever, with all the colonies and so on. Maybe yours distinguish between those ancient/medieval/whatever empires and the empires with colonies, like GB.
But of course the Roman Empire had a huge influence on the history of the world, I never denied that.
that actor who plays the Spanish ambassador is actually english and I thought he did a fantastic job with the accent and the overall acting, a worthy challenger to Cate's Elizabeth
THE THE REAL ELIZABETH..IS MY BIGGEST INSPIRATION...SHE MADE ENGLAND ...THE BIGGEST EMPIRE IN THE HISTORY ....GOD SAVE THIS QUEEN!!!..EVERY TIME I NEED MOTIVATION...I SEE THIS PART!!!
I think that as long as you accept that this is NOT accurate and is rather a "DOCU-DRAMA" you will enjoy the fairy tale. Probably not the most accurate portrayal of a less glamourless past but a real good movie. You could almost believe that it could of been that way ,even though in truth you know that it wasn't. Good acting and good cinematography. Deserves all its awards and more.
I love Elizabeth in this movie. Most of people say that her character is not acurate with the history here, but I think that's a good thing, because I remember that my history teacher have been always saying that Elizabeth was a bitch ;D she said Elizabeth killed the real queen etc...but after watching this movie you can see that there is a possibility that she was a good person. I'm not saying 'bout her only as a queen because we already know she was an amazing queen for England and that's a fact
this is fantastic. The director said he shot this scene only once because it was so captivating and perfect that he didn't want to re shoot it. Isn't that great? There are scenes in the film which have not been even edited because Cate performed so accurately that there was no need for that.
@yairc19 She is one of the first "IRON LADIES"" of the known world (Liz i mean, not Cate lol), the second and third would be "DAME EUGENIA CHARLES" and "DAME MARGARET THATCHER" Kindly google it if you have the time. Thank you.
ok so i take spanish history and all but i LOVE this queen and duh both elizabeth movies are filled with lies but hello they need to make a good drama love love love it woo-hoo go girl power lol
This movie smells English chauvinism a lot, despite of that the director is Indian. King Felipe II is pictured as a religious coward and a narrow-minded person. And the director arrogantly presents England as a castle of freedom and the 'lighted sect', protestanism. In the movie, catholicism=sect of superstitions and the greatest setback to science, freedom and Spain=evil leader of catholic alliance.
This movie would annoy me so much, if I was Spanish.
European royals should continue dressing themselves in the Elizabethan fashion. So beautiful and colourful clothes, not the hideous suits and old lady dresses they wear nowadays.

@Generalscorpio All she does is travel. Big deal. If you dont like my opinion then get over it and dont read it.
ghurter 10 months ago
@ghurter If you don't want these comments don't express an opinion, you see that one can work both ways.
Now about the queen, again tell me of another person her age who does as much as she does, you see when you get to certain age you retire and take it easy, she's been working the same amount since before she was Queen and is expected to do so until she's dead or otherwise unable to fulfill her duties.
And sh does more than just travel she's a huge source of income for the nation.
Generalscorpio 10 months ago
@ghurter The current queen does not have the opportunity to command her people. She has, realistically, little power now, in some ways for the better some for worse. People nowadays believe that you should work to get where you are, so naturally the royal family is losing respect because the common people don't think someone should be deemed worthy to rule simply due to their ancestry.
Kafudanapar 8 months ago
@Kafudanapar Yes but, that's so untrue. They work just as hard as any 'commoner'. As Generalscorpio said, Her Majesty works 24 hours, 7 days a week at the age of 90, without a rest hardly (apart to play on her Wii). She's an inspiration to the British people, and when they did a server in early 2011, her popularity was 77% give or take. THe British people (majority) love the royals as they should do. David Cameron, Tony Blair, etc, they all run the country, but they pass -- the Queen is forever.
PandaPawSmile 8 months ago
@PandaPawSmile It's not untrue, the Royals may work hard and have some influence on today's society, but they do not have any real power. They do not make the laws or policies of England or any other country because what the people want is a democracy, not a chosen leader. So yes, the Queen uses her influence over people for good and the people respect her for that, but she cannot decide what is right for her country anymore. A Queen is forever, but her power has long since faded.
Kafudanapar 8 months ago
although it is a powerfful thing the whole sword part, no foreigners were allowed to carry weapons around her majesty due the repeated attempts on her life so kind of incorrect.

MaximusIbericus 1 year ago
@repn87 I get your point. The whole movie is pseudo bombastic (if not completely) so I guess that had an impact in her performance as well. Even though I think she is terrific here, I respect your opinion and understand what you mean. What is your favourite role of hers?

@AshesXBlood HAHAHAHA Bigger than Rome? Are you kidding me? Do some research please,or get some history books.
linegenrou 1 year ago
@linegenrou No, I'm not kidding. Do some research yourself.
AshesXBlood 1 year ago
@AshesXBlood Biggest empire regarding extension was the Mongolian Empire. The longest was the Byzantine Empire. But most historicians still points out the Roman Empire as the biggest empire ever because of the influence on the rest of the world.
linegenrou 1 year ago
@linegenrou Well, the sources I have say that the British Empire was the biggest empire ever, with all the colonies and so on. Maybe yours distinguish between those ancient/medieval/whatever empires and the empires with colonies, like GB.
But of course the Roman Empire had a huge influence on the history of the world, I never denied that.

CaptainCook1778 1 year ago
