Yeah the whole Collins versus Gabriel thing is dumb. Both did great work (c'mon, you don't like Duke?) during their respective eras, anyways if Phil was such a bad influence on Genesis how do you explain Calling All Stations?

I agree with 19rocker19. Genesis was a phenomenal band until the 80's. After their album And Then There Were Three I stopped listening to them and buying their records.
This is one of the last "Genesis sounding" songs. Might be we find others in the "Then there were 3" record... Unfortunately after that Phil Collins fell in the music bussiness (and he prove to be very good in that field too), dragging some other musicians with him (Clapton, Knopfler, etc.). Even if I never was a great Genesis accolyte (except from Hackett) I get on my knees when talking about this band.
@southsimpleman I doubt you could say it was Collins' fault... Peter Gabriel made pop songs in the 80's too... It was the way they find to survive in a hostile musical environment... I really like some of their pop songs, though!
@TheSon104 Peter Gabriel was Genesis you asswipe w/o Gabriel there would be NO Genesis, look where Genesis is today..... No where, have you heard of a Genesis concert/ tour ???
As a longtime Rush fan I am appreciating how they were influenced by Genesis. The beginning of Squonk seems like it influenced Rush's beginning of their song"A farewell to king's which came out a year and change later. This tune is pure loud unadulterated prog rocknroll. This is one of the best songs ever made.Collins high notes he sings on this and the range of vocal pitch is Magnificent. The lyrics the intonations and enunciation that he sings. What a great contribution these guys gave to humanity.
Next to "Entangled", this is perhaps my favourite song by Genesis. Still one of the best concerts of the 70's I ever saw. Was always sorry Phil Collins went to sentimental pop crap in the 90's. He had a great rock voice.
do you ever listen to real said music over and over so that you feel some pain inside? I had A TRICK OF THE TAIL in 1985 when my mind was getting messied up from too much stress.
Dear so... what do I call you??? Well, put it aside... would explain where the hell Peter Gabriel took off that triangle from "Mercy Street"( of course he was no longer Genesis lead singer)??? He is classical backgrounded and even though, that instrument and and sound is BRAZILIAN. You really think you're an smart ass, don´t you boy. By the way, I am from Brazil. And guys like Sinatra were deeply influenced by our music!
you CANNOT overthink this Genesis stuff. There was Hackett and Gabriel, then there were three. both bands have impressive merits and to sit around thinking that one is better than the other because they were LESS commercial or hit song oriented, that's screwy, because the dame guys that made us LOVE the band were STILL in it!!! The guys were trying to carry on, they weren't clerks or Waiters or Postal workers, they were musicians and they carried on. so cut 'em some slack and Love the product :)
Being from North Central Pennsylvania I'd heard the legend of the Squonk for many years. i've always loved the song, but this version blows away any I've heard before or since. Phil is a great performer. There are those who would argue to the death, but I think he's much better than Pete. Pete's great in his own right, but as for Genesis, Phil's a much better fit.
Weather Report was a jazz "supergroup" co-founded by saxophonist Wayne Shorter and keyboardist Joe Zawinul. The band was considered by many to be one of the most significant modern influences on jazz and jazz-fusion. Thompson went to jam with the band and was eventually offered the drummer's seat.
I like this version better than the one from "Three sides" because of the sound quality and the Piano that Tony Banks is using. And Darryl Steurmer has a better sound going on than Steve Hackett. But at the same time I'm glad that Steurmer doesn't try to change Hackett's lines.
There's no "Squonk" on Three Sides Live. Given you prefer Stuermer to Hackett however, I take it that you're referring to the Seconds Out version. Better sound? That's subjective. They obviously use different guitars. Stuermer tends to rely on Fender strats, whereas Hackett is known for using Les Paul or whatever other Gibson guitars he's playing. I'm more of a Gibson type myself. Also, Hackett has his unique sound and identity and no amount of Daryl shredding can compensate for the lack of it.
@stereom But in all fairness, he sounded better doing this on the 78 tour. Plus, he did shine on some songs, especially In The Cage, Fountain Of Salmascis.
Also, one has to consider that Hackett's guitar parts were often mixed low on Seconds Out. Maybe that contributes to the sensation of an underwhelming guitar sound? Hardcore fans say that one should listen to the bootlegs from the W&W tour as guitar is more audible. I can't rule out the notion that perhaps the trio is so pleased with Stuermer's contributions that they give his sound more presence and room live than Hackett (obviously at odds with Banks) was ever given.
Phil really performes well on this one. You can say anything about him, but he's actually a born pop-star. And thats not definetally a bad thing. There are some really cool stars out there. Few, but some. He's one of them.
Very interesting live version of Squonk. If you watch the interviews from the TOTT DVD Tony says when they were auditioning singers they didn't think Phil would have a hard enough edge to his vocals on some of the songs. Guess he proved them wrong. While not my favorite song from that album, Squonk still has legs...but if you don't stand up, you don't stand a chance!
if someone can tell me what is the loudest drums out there, and what size should your tom tom and snare be in order to play heavy and loud like phil collins john bonham and tony thompson of powerstation
Well a start would be to remove the resonator skins from your toms, Phil always plays without those because it gives him that "WHAP" he's known for. Add to the fact that he he has a monstrously agressive style and always uses reverb and gate on his drums to make them sound even more powerful does a lot. It's funny in a way, Phil is not a metal musician but has a sound and style most metal drummers would die for.
You wrote it perfectly!!!Phill Collins isgreat drummer and quite good singer..and he continued great after Peter gabriel left...but after 1980 he changed the band into ONE BIG SHIT!
Gee, I don't know, maybe it has to do with the fact that Kylie Minogue uses instrument sounds in her songs, and "The Brazilian" sounds like those instruments.
@19rocker19 You cant just decide "I want the band to have a bunch of hits". It was because of him starting to write more that resulted in Face Value. That was an accident. So you have to think that most of the commercial success was more of an accident. To blame Phil is ignorant. If you want to blame something blame the addition of the drum machine to the band.
@ceazea The Drum Machine changed the way they wrote music. And so did the keyboards that Tony was using. Gone were the Mellotrons and moogs and in came the Cheesy sounding "Brazillian" tones. Those old tones made the band sound more authentic and real. And the fake drums. Hugh even said it himself. "One thing I wish I could do and that would be to go back and re record the songs with electronics drums and re do them with acoustic drums".
You can't tell me that, if you had the song writing talent, and if you were offered millions to write Disney songs that you wouldn't do the same. Now, I'm not saying that the stuff that he wrote was any good. I hated it, but cut the guy some slack. There is no way anyone would've passed that up. And as for fg67hhkd9, you cannot tell me that those songs are not amazing. Though the best Genesis songs were written from Nursery Cryme to the Shapes Album, those songs are great.
I agree. Some of the songs he wrote for Tarzan were nice, but nothing compared to his work with Genesis. Domino, Fading Lights and The Brazilian are great post-Gabriel Genesis songs. I also agree that the best Genesis songs were written from Nursery Cryme - Genesis, actually make that Trespass - Genesis, the songs on Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance on great pop songs. As for Calling All Stations...
If music is a contest to be compared and criticized, then you have already missed the bus.
