its all about driving skill; being a 'careful driver' is not enough for an inexperienced driver behind the wheel of a rear-engine micro car that is being driven daily in traffic (i.e. with idiots driving big cars). one simply can't be careful for other motorists...the newer driver should have a bit more power and a lot more built-in safety in his or her ride. spend some money to protect your bod.
I have a 67 bug and I wouldn't drive anything else ever in my life I'm a single mom with two boys it's very cheap maintenance and in this economy twenty bucks gives me a full tank I totaly recommend :)
So are these cars safe? I have been looking into buying one of these for a while (because they are very affordable and they have lots of charm) but i would be using it for everyday use (not just here and there)-- I would also be using it to drive home from college (2-4 times per school year) next year which is about a 400 mile trip one way-- Would you say this is a safe car for a young person who is a careful driver and do these cars have seat belts?
@sewphie They're not as safe as new cars, by any means (ABS, air bags, crumple zones, etc.) For the time they were good. Some even have 3-point seat belts (shoulder strap), the type 3's have this. Padded dashes are standard in the later cars, like the 70's super beetle.
But any 30-40 year old car will require regular maintenance & repair. If you want a cheap, reliable car, get something like a 6-year Nissan Sentra, which would have similar gas costs and cost about the same upfront.
@sewphie Hi friend i have a beatle. Its a very nice car, but unstable for high speeds. if you are a carefuly driver and will drive at 50-55mph. You really will like it. But in the rain drive slow. I have a 1.3 beatle and the max speed is =~ 90 mph, but its a very bad idea to the security and for they refrigeration system to do that all the time. I use it in speeds of 65/70mph mph on good roads with speace.

I was driving my beetle around one day when I noticed a man on the side of the road, I asked him if he was okay and we got chatting. It turns out he was an old desert rat. Aafter the war he returned to Africa to teach children to read. He said that he used VW beetles and camper vans to get around because they were so reliable, didn't overheat and didn't require water, which was obviously scarse. He said they were "bomb-proof" which is quite a claim from a tank crewman!
That is what happened to me in my 1974 Bug.Rolled it but not down a clift. The front window poped out in one piece then some bikers were coming up the hill and they rolled it back over upright for us.The air cleaner came off the carb and that was it.We then drove it home from Big bear to Redondo bch ca.Ahhhh good German steel.
Some of the murders by the German BND, the ex GESTAPO, known to the public:

That background music is an ironic soundtrack for the little Nazi-mobile, so soon after the war. Hitler's propagandists used to call it "nigger-jew music".
"The Nazis had barred both black foreigners and jazz — which they called "Nigger-Jew Music."
You can find it on the PBS web site. Though I've also read that they didn't actually ban jazz records, just American performers. Of course, I wasn't there.
After it's driven off a cliff, it will only drive backwards from that poing on. Amazing! At least it's still drivable unlike other car makes and models which would have probably been on fire and too hot to get near to get into any gear.
Shame Hitler was an evil dictator that set germany back many years after WWII. Imagine if Germany was never ruled by an evil dicator and instead of building weapons to rule other countries in WWII they were building things for the consumor back then.
This is a damn kooky commercial. It's probably from the earl 1950s, meaning that this particular car was probably at least a few years old at the time they sacrificed it for the filming.
I flipped my 1971 Beetle on a freeway and as someone else commented, the interior strongly smelled of battery acid afterwards since (for those who don't know) the battery was underneath the back seat.
Porsche never "built" a car until Reuter Coachbuilders sold Porsche it's factory so it could go on to other things. Ferdinand only designed the car. VW built them before the war.
I know people who love vw bugs would disagree but round top or not, I think that test car was caged or braced. This looks like a propaganda movie to me.. I wouldn't mind owning a souped up beetle but a full cage would be mandatory!
To everyone saying that the window's too big to be a split, the nipple hubcaps are KDF. They never made a KDF Beetle that wasn't a split. It's a split.
@StaydrunkUK no your wrong! vw was funded by hitler and origionaly desighned and built by Fredenan Porsche who had a son who thought the beetle was too slow and boreing so in 1952 he took a beetle and modifyed the engine and meltded down the body to form the first ever Porsche. know your facts before you say stuff
@102Help Actually, Ferry Porsche had the early Porsche bodies hand hammered from new aluminum, not melted down Beetles, you are correct in saying that the early 356 Porsches had soupped up VW engines though. btw,,, Porsche is pronounced "Por-shee-ya" not like the front porch
If that was a flat roof his skull might have ended up flat too.
They certainly designed them well but can help think there was battery acid, fuel and engine oil everywhere since operating upside down wasn't part of the design brief
imagine trying to tell the personal claims people about that :D. Man: ahhh well it seemed like a good idea at the time, I thought fuck it, looked like fun on the box :D
I don't see why there's any doubt. It's a split. So many features if you know what to look for, like nipple hubcaps, grooved bumper, etc. Besides, there are several spots where you can see the split if you pause it.
@clydeburkey fuck off is it !!!!!!!!!!!!! i have 3 vw and never had any problems it was only because that guy behind the weel dont no how to use a car !

Many years ago I spun my beloved 1953 Switter Beetle on the I-210 freeway ,doing about 85 MPH ~ when it hit the curb it flipped up and over . we were quite lucky the doors didn't pop open ,my then young wife wasn't hurt although I was . I got a passerby to help me roll it back onto it's wheels and down the embankment but the ground strap had broken so I couldn't start it up .I've worked on more crashed Beetles back in the day than most of you will ever see , they're sturdy .
I speak fluent German and the narrator is saying this is part of the pre-delivery inspection every Volkswagen undergoes at the dealership prior to being sold. In Kansas they had to truck in 180 cubic meters of German dirt for the"Drive off cliff, flip over, and catch on fire" test.
You can clearly see the split rear window and vents at the 27 sec mark. Besides, anyone that knows VWs can see it's a split. Ribbed bumpers are the first give away.
yeah, my dad had kept one closed in a garage for almost 8 years and he cleaned it took it out to see how it works. The vehicle din stared coz of a depleted battery, he pushed the vehicle several meters and the vehicle started. That was long before I was born.
Well i wish one day we can ride this amazing vehicle on moon lol.
Nah, that;s the back seat visible through the back window. The car is what it is. I don't think it was a ringer of a car. Don't necessarily think the driver was inside for the whole fall though... ;)
I see no reason that the transmission wouldn't work unless the driver WAS in the car during the fall and bent the shifter badly with his body (or more likely a front seat came loose and bent the shifter...).
I own a 1965 Beetle and I STILL don't want to be in a crash... -GRIN!-
So what have we summrised? This magical car can change the rear wiindow, works only in reverse and that after a little editing you can have footage of some guy with spotless overalls climb out of the car, seemingly unshaken.
Is there anything this car can't do?
(Citroen did the same cliff test with a Traction Avant without editing and after a bit of a breather, the driver drove on in one of three working forward gears.)
looks like it has had some metal work cut out of the back! if you stop frame at 27 seconds you see the window has been cut out and what looks like some box section put in to add some rigidity!
first beetle models had a gas pedal that looked like a ball bearing wheel...you had to actually turn it like some sort of a volume knob with your foot...great stuff.
Hitler has given Ferdinand Porshe a rough sketch of what he wanted. Hitler has theoretically designed that swooping roof and nearly every car now has that in one form or the other as that swoop has ridgidity porperties. So Hitler did care about people after all. :) This does not mean i condone the actions of this evil twisted diabolical genius. I insist! Its just a fact that he is a genius, tragic fact!
It doesnt matter I have a 64 Beetle with one-piece windows. But what uoi probably seen what the add-on one-piece windows. Remember the one-piece windows with the little notch in them for smokers. Yeah. One-piece windows doesnt classify anything, but one-piece windows.
Well at the beginning you can see that it defiantly is a split probably a 1949 or maybe even a 1950 meaning that commercial came out around then so that rules out the possibility of it being a early 60's plus the 60's back window is bigger than that.
When it falls off the cliff the window looks like a small square and if you noticed they never show the back window or they change the camera angles quickly. So i don't know whats going on.
@beetlejuice150 Its clearly a split window bug the whole time. You dont even need to see the back of the car to tell this anyways...dig the "nipple" hubcaps; those only came on splits.
In 1973, rolled my month-old bug off Mulholland Drive just east of Coldwater Canyon, 200-feet down into Beverly Hills, a hillside so steep they still haven't built houses there. Wore my seat belt and walked out, climbing back up to Mulholland. When the LAFD arrived (located then, in what is now the TreePeople headquarters), they said I was the first to survive that crash. The seat-belt helped.
...next day I hammered out the fenders and put them back on, I got the driver door to open & close and working, and it became my daily driver (and legal too!) for the next few weeks until I bought a '72 pop-top camper.
I'm glad me and the car survived, and I was resourceful, but I'd rather not experience that again.
Unfortunately I can relate to this footage, it was a 67 beetle, I was sideswiped head-on, on a mountain road straightaway. The impact started at the headlight ring & went down length of the car, & tore the rear fender off. I slid sideways into a ditch 4 ft. deep, rolled onto the passenger side. Shaken, I unbuckled seat belt, rolled down window, climbed out. Later, the tow truck came & tipped it up, pulled it out. It started, turned on headlights, put fender in back seat, drove home.
In the days of my youth we put a 1956 VW over 3 times in the middle of a country road, flipped it back on its wheels and put another 10,000 miles on it before we got around to changing bodies
God damn it finally. someone other than a Mexican(me) defends the Germans. Hitler was Germany's Harold Ford. He guild volks wagon with the help of Porsche engineer to construct "the peoples car". Later Porsche used propritary parts to build his first "PORSCHE" automobile that later became the brand that made the Panamara and the Chyanne. So everyone that loves the Porsche better "Heil Hitler" He freed Germany from the WWI injustice that the underlings did under his name.
Hitler was a dictator who is responsable for the death of millions of innocent people.
Although I love vw beeltes, and I admit that Hitler was crucial for the develoment of this great car, Hitlers role is a black page in the history of mankind.

I see no reason that the transmission wouldn't work unless the driver WAS in the car during the fall and bent the shifter badly with his body (or more likely a front seat came loose and bent the shifter...).
I own a 1965 Beetle and I STILL don't want to be in a crash... -GRIN!-

Dang, did Hitler himself order that test?
ushouldntjudgeme 1 year ago
So what have we summrised? This magical car can change the rear wiindow, works only in reverse and that after a little editing you can have footage of some guy with spotless overalls climb out of the car, seemingly unshaken.
Is there anything this car can't do?
(Citroen did the same cliff test with a Traction Avant without editing and after a bit of a breather, the driver drove on in one of three working forward gears.)
Truemouse 1 year ago
looks like it has had some metal work cut out of the back! if you stop frame at 27 seconds you see the window has been cut out and what looks like some box section put in to add some rigidity!
mmmm.

@neosio it's a split window.

first beetle models had a gas pedal that looked like a ball bearing wheel...you had to actually turn it like some sort of a volume knob with your foot...great stuff.

ROCKSOLID19 2 years ago 7
What is this? It can only drive in reverse after the fall?
PawlieGR 2 years ago 17
Is it just me or does it look like the wheels aren't even turning? Is it being pulled by a chain?
TheJediCharles 2 years ago
You are correct, sir. I never would have noticed had you not mentioned it.
WENDILEY1 2 years ago
@WENDILEY1
So, that means they not only senselessly destroyed a beetle, but even lied that it survived it. I wonder if that guy was even in there.
TheJediCharles 2 years ago
@PawlieGR there seems to be a wall of eart or sand in front of it so forward may have been a problem due to that ;)

Has anybody else noticed that at 0:37 it isnt a Split it is a Small-Window. But good video.
arbeitemachtfrei 2 years ago
you don't even see the rear window at 0:37
creepingdeathnu 2 years ago
You're right. You get a glimpse of the rear window at 0:27. It's not a split window indeed. I wonder if it is an oval window. Can't see it very well.
beetlejuice150 2 years ago
You can see that its a split at 0:10
Yea, i think it looks kinda like a small square window at 0:27.
This is pretty strange.
creepingdeathnu 2 years ago
@creepingdeathnu youre right
ROCKSOLID19 2 years ago
Beetlejuice150
Ithink it is an Oval. Because the vents look like they at dead-on with the window.
With a small windows vents 2 or so inches below.
SO i think it is an Oval! Good Eye!
arbeitemachtfrei 2 years ago
It's a split, it has one-piece windows.

It doesnt matter I have a 64 Beetle with one-piece windows. But what uoi probably seen what the add-on one-piece windows. Remember the one-piece windows with the little notch in them for smokers. Yeah. One-piece windows doesnt classify anything, but one-piece windows.

Also, what most people are seeing as a larger rectangular window is just the split window with the vents. The quality isn't exactly crystal clear :P

gokartbuyer 1 year ago
@beetlejuice150 I paused it perfect, and it's too square to be an oval. Maybe very early 60s?
richardmaudsley77 1 year ago
@richardmaudsley77
So i don't know whats going on.
creepingdeathnu 1 year ago
@beetlejuice150 no, it's definitely a split. look again.
armcurl 1 year ago
@beetlejuice150 you guys must be blind. it's a split window. the commercial is from the 40's. you just watched a splitty go over a cliff.

I'm glad me and the car survived, and I was resourceful, but I'd rather not experience that again.
woodsprout 2 years ago 2

@beetlejuice150 hey hitler just wanted a car. Its Porsche who we have to thank, so technically, it wasnt hitler (:
