  • total gem!!!

  • this proves that music is a universal language

  • Oh my God, wait & see, what will soon become of me.

  • It's a cig not a blunt lol...they show him asking where he can buy a pack in the documentary

  • There is an African child inside of me.

  • It's fantastic to see such great musicians come together and play.

  • trey looks like a small child on christmas morning in this video...but, then again, that's how he always looks when he's playing...

  • I remember seeing this on TV about 7 years ago, and it blew me away. I love how when the native people start playing, it's almost like second nature, and they pick it up immediately without even thinking about it.

  • 0:42 Blunt on dave's ear

  • @MixWrestlr105 except not.

  • this video is great

  • trey is the man yo

  • trey looks so clueless. UVM and South Africa clearly don't mix as well as he had hoped when he booked that flight

  • god i love treys facial expressions 4:01-4:02 "dave when are we gonna light that blunt, this is getting too real for me"

  • Thank god for rare videos on monday mornings

  • the level of talent these two have is unable to be measured.

  • fish @ :18?

  • please tell me there's a recording of this somewhere where i can download it.... (with better sound :) )

  • @hawleywe its on the Some Devil CD by Dave Matthews. Trey Anastasio is on electric guitar for the songs. Its lacking the Orchestra Baobob guys but its still great.

  • There is a joint behind Dave's ear. lol

    these guys are awesome

  • @SmiltytheFlea its a dave song you dumbass! its an awesome song played by two of the most creative revolutionary artists there are!!

  • i hate to say it but trey is a junkie here. meh

  • @dividethesky2 yeah, this is back in trey's dark days for sure.

  • Music The universal language... Amazing

  • then dave must be yoda

  • hahahaha... awesome :D

  • 3 minutes prior Dave and Trey got high with the locals. Hmmm. Looks like Dave's prepared to roll another.

  • the kids at the balcony watch the entire thing. I know people who would leave after 30 seconds. magic.

  • this is music

  • i am a true belivr of music being the universal language

  • I find myself really wishing I could do more than just "Like" and "Favourite" this.

  • piss my pants at 4:02 treys face

  • @kingpengvin I thought the same thing, "whats that you said baobab man?"

  • This is s real showing of where Dave has gotten his overall influence for music. I believe he just loves the art and passion he saw growing up in South Africa. Dave is my favorite by far...concert 42 & 43 in Texas this year ! Hopfully i can squeeze in more...

  • i wish i could buy a high quality version of this......awesome!

  • one of the things i remember about tis special was that the men in africa held hands and didnt see anything weird about it...for some reason that just stuck with me. prolly cuz i wish people everywhere could express themselves like that without shame...i ALWAYS think of that when i see anything from the show. I wish i could find the whole thing somewhere.

  • @girlphriend That's the exact thing I remember most about it too. I remember very little about the whole show overall but that I remember quite clearly.

  • lol he has a cigarette in his ear...

  • @thefl0ck i'm pretty sure that's a pencil...

  • this is really good for da soul.

  • music certainly soothes the soul ♥

  • If they combined bands...they would be called Big Eyed Phish?

  • So damn lucky to be alive to hear such glorious music

  • finally somone else got this vid on here deff the best trey and dave on here its deff the shisnat!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dave + trey + baobab = f'ing amazing

  • i like both dave and trey alot. They're both just real artists who make real music and don't ever give in to mainstream.

  • @LSUsuperBuick dunno if that is true. i think both artists recent albums would beg to differ

  • Who are the fucked up 9 people who don't like this

  • This is real music.... this amazing ..... its also amazing how dave can play while he's blazed

  • DAVE and TREY = cross cultural perfection

  • @Capooch21 dude sweet comment.

  • there is something beautiful here, how music can cross cultures...it shows it is all one world.

  • Dave playing at home. Id there anything more cool?

  • Senegal and South Africa are actually not at all close to each other. Not trying to be rude, but Africa's a huge continent and you can't just say that anywhere on the continent is Dave's "home".

  • i bet that "cig" in his ear is tightly packed with crack and heroin. LOL! HaHaHeHe Whatever. The song it incredibly meaningful/beautiful and should be the focus of this video- not whats in his ear!

  • who cares what it is or what he does.. he's not hurting anyone else.. play on fellas..

  • Music can heal you.

  • wish I could have been there to play along. that would have been a truly lucky time to share. keep music true

  • who cares what is in his ear or if either were getting high at the time...they are both musical geniuses, who make amazing music. Everyone loved it before they knew they were gettin high and that shouldn't change.

  • amen. nothing more needs to be said

  • its just a cig....seen this on TV a couple years back. if you get the chance to see the rest of this video you gotta check out where they play some tunes with the locals

  • yeah the best song they play with them is hommage a tontan ferrer im pretty sure thats how you spell it but its hard to find the version with trey and dave

  • pretty sure its a straw in his ear..

  • @cdrase

...a straw filled with weed :) hemp leaves

  • a straw? ha

  • "umphrey" enough said

  • fckin awesome love when music comes together.

  • messed up..its "just like that" not "again" idgf

  • Dave is good,,, but Trey makes this song special.

  • kensemr.... Trey is a Jedi... that's why he makes this song special!

  • trey is a jedi master

  • I love this version. It's feels a little lighter than other versions I've heard. I don't meant that in a bad way - I mean it isn't over produced, or have multiple sounds coming at your ears.

It's like the diet-"So Damn Lucky"

    It feel's so free.

  • the ability to know music is truly a gift

  • Fantastic Song!!!!!

  • is that a "J" on Dave's ear?

  • wondering the same thing haha

  • I recall an interview where an interviewer asked Dave what was something he hears that bothers him most. His response was, "I hate that people assume I'm stoned all the time."

  • trey = jedi

  • This is great!!!! Gotta love Dave!!!

  • Ever since I saw the House episode where Dave played a Savant, that's all I think of when I see him.

  • theres a joint in his ear in this...i love this man. great video too

  • someone should upload the song hommage a tontan ferrer that dave and trey played with orchestra baobab in this documentary

  • this is incredible.nuff said.

  • haha a rolled blunt is in his ear. my opinion anyways.

  • Comment removed

  • looks like goree island

  • wow that was fuckin amazing

  • Look what they say at the end....that was good at the end :) you can see Trey speak to someone of a total different culture through his short fast first trying to throw back their voice notes. Just exceptional!

  • What is in Daves left ear? Tell me its not the rolled up bill that gave trey his smile....

Don't get me wrong I will love phish until the day I die, and Dave is straight too nice and acoustic. Maybe someone has a clearer video than I. Whats in his ear?

  • weed

  • Lovin it..the Trey face is amazing!

  • is this on itunes?

  • Comment removed

  • tok tok pass

    comon davve

  • look at what hes got behind his left ear...what a LEGEND

  • Nice catch... I would've missed that!

  • Why is there so much negativity and fighting in these comments? Listen to the song. It instills a sense of hope in that people from around the world can come together in peace and play music. Music is a wonderful thing because it is universal. It is too bad people have tainted it with all their "music" today.

  • Comment removed

  • i agree.

  • Phish is cool if you like garage band funk.

  • Are you a musician? What do you do or are you just an idiotic cynic? Tell me where I can hear your music.

  • Nothing about my statement was cynical, so i believe the idiot here is you.

As for my music, I really don't think i can be bothered to tell a douchebag like yourself where to listen to it just to listen to said douchebag bash it.

Take a chill pill, or screw off, bro.

  • 4:01 Trey is like, WTF?

  • well said

  • im not a college chick, and I love dave matthews for his lyrics and unique guitar playing and I like trey for his varitey in jazz and rock guitar playing.

you just sound like an ass when you say shit like that, both musicians are rare to come across these days and deserve to be praised.

  • hahaha yeah i know trey looks like a fucking creeper

  • Comment removed

  • your retarded they play 2 different types of music

  • Comment removed

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    youre such an idiot

  • Apples and fucking oranges. When there is a gay ass war about who is better between friends that are two iconic and irreplaceable musicians i realize why life is a pissing contest. Morons! Dumb technical burnouts always making everything too hard to enjoy.

  • if you don't want to have an intelligent debate, then don't comment about it.

and if the topic makes this hard to enjoy, then you obviously put too much stock in how other people feel. I love this tune and would enjoy it no matter what was said in it's regards.

and i have the time to spend MAYBE a half hour a day online, that hardly defines me as a "technical burnout"

you just made yourself look like the moron in this situation

  • actually i am quite spot on. youre so predictable, and sorry you took 'technical burnout' to heart but that is exactly what your analysis bears out. a pissing contest. and you missed the point. i digress, since you are the grand and wise music guru who anoints those worthy. what a douche. lol

  • Just enjoy the music people.

  • is that joint in his ear???

  • who is joint?

  • dave doesnt smokeeeeeeee...looks like a j to me

  • look! Whtie guys!! get em!!!

  • kill yourself.

  • pause @ :20. It looks like Fishman's moo moo haha

  • omg your right! haha

  • haha! i saw it! lol

  • dave wishes he was trey

  • Comment removed

  • and trey wishes he was jerry....

  • haha, that's comical. nothing against trey...but seriously, he wishes he was half as talented and original as dave

  • Right, the guy who wrote YEM wishes he was as talented as the dude who writes campfire singalongs.

DMB used to open for THE PHISH, you fuckin retarded frat boy.

  • they are really good friends and have been for a long time. trey just happens to be the way more talented one

  • bwahahaha!

i realize they are friends, and both are very talented, but you cannot offer even one legitimate reason why Trey is way more talented.

you like Trey better and that cool, but to say hes way more talented than Dave is completely ignorant....

Dave is the more talented composer of the two, capable of writing much more complex arrangements than trey, he writes deeper and more intelligent lyrics, his voice is exponentially stronger, and his style is more authentic.

  • All of the above statements are incorrect.

  • you obviously have nothing of substance to offer so why don't you wander off now

  • ha, yeah, you're right. I don't need to say anything. You're just wrong.

  • I have been a fan of both since 1994. Dave writes pop songs. The arrangements are written by his band members (mainly the horn section). I agree that he writes great lyrics. Trey is a true composer and has written arrangements for symphonies and orchestras as well as complicated music for Phish. ie. Gamehendge. He doesn't write very many lyrics but collaborates with genius lyricist like Tom Marshall. I am not sure if Dave's lyrics are more intelligent but they are definitely more catchy.

  • Why do I feel defensive?

  • thank you for the intelligent input.

I hardly think that the horn section writes all the arrangements. every member has their part in the composition process, but Dave is in the driver's seat

Trey may be the pure composer of the two and I do enjoy phish, but they wear their influences on their sleeve, where as Dave has been a constant innovator.

i consider Dave's lyrics more intelligent because i feel they are more abstract and poetic. maybe intelligent isn't the right word for it.

  • Well I guess we can agree that I like apples and you like oranges. But you are 100 percent wrong if you think Dave writes any horn charts. It's true that he is in the driver seat because he writes the chord progression, lyrics & general meldoy. As for wearing influences on sleeves-what do you think Phishs' influences are. I can't think of any band but only styles like fusion, funk, jazz, blues & a touch of barber shop quartet.

  • gamehenge is great, if you pay attention its loosley based on the series of books containing, the lion witch and wardrobe, prince caspian ect, i always thought that was cool, but i only seen them play the complete story 1 time in my 2 yrs of tourin

  • You are lucky then.Phish has only played completed Gamehendge four times in their career. The first in '88 and the last in '94 in Sacramento to a small audience. My first show was in oct '95 and i've seen them countless times heard a lot from Gamehendge but of course never the whole story played live. You're right about the C.S Lewis influence. What show did you see this at?

  • Thats why Trey is jamming with Dave on one of his songs with a dumb grin on his face because he's enjoying it so much (and thats not against Trey because I enjoy his music, just saying).

  • i dont think anyone wishes they were someone else. thats just dumb. how about you just enjoy the music

  • Why are you replying to me that you don't think anyone wishes they were someone else? I wasn't the one who said anyone wished they were anyone else. My point was that they both enjoy each others music, etc.

  • this song is amazing

  • 4:00

  • lol at that haha OOOOOOO

  • and then trey's reaction is priceless, LMFAO

  • hahahah i actually believe the thing in his ear is a licorice stick. he said he uses that as a substitute for smoking.

  • At 2:31 you can tell he genuinely digs the chant - he's like yeeeeahhh.

  • The South African SOUL man and the modern guitar god....it don't get much better than this folks.

  • good song, kind of bad angles and recording

  • I like how you wrote the info for this video. Nice.

  • Haha why did Trey and Dave keep giving weird creepy looks? Great song!!

  • Happy Birthday David.

  • Trey is a Jedi!!!!

  • You ignorant fool!!!!

  • yeah not cool man

  • you have to be shitting me playin1

  • i'm sure you're right. that's why he's a huge public icon and has made millions from the songs he has written.

  • hahaa really?

dave matthews has an extremely wide vocal range. granted, he doesn't exercise it on this particular song. not to mention he's an original songwriter with stirring, often meaningful lyrics and exceptionally original/complex guitar playing.

  • i coulndt agree more with you, his voice is amazing and the musical skills as well. playin1, since your on youtube watch some videos of dave improvising, then you'll know what i mean...long live dave

  • I mean, I'm a huge DMB fan and everything, I do think Dave is amazing, and he has written some of the most beautiful songs I've heard. He does say he's not as great as everyone puts him out to be but I think he's just being modest. Keep playing your heart out.

  • This video gave me a much greater appreciation for Dave. I haven't seen Dave live since 1998(first concert) becuase the scene it to custy for my tastes... but him and Trey together is straight from the head stash and this video proves it!!!!

  • both ledgends...
