OMFG this so so freaking helpful lmao and the crazy part I knew this months ago the instructions ive read or watched so difficult to understand hahaha lmao
Great video. I just started locking almost 3 months ago and my loctitian is maintaining my locs by interlocking (I've had my roots interlocked once since I've started). To be honest, I prefer the look of palmrolled locs, but interlocking imo is a lot more practical.
As a loctician I can see a clear difference. While both techniques have pros and cons I find that latched locs look and feel more frizzy as compared palm rolled. Also with latching if not done correctly can leave holes in the loc that can not be corrected as well as breakage if pulled too tightly.
I have decided to go "freeforming" and leaving my hair well alone!!! The latching has broken my hair too badly so I feel its time to have a good 6-12 month break and then depending on how much stronger the base of my hair is, I might go back to it. Can hair that has been latched be palm rolled instead? This has always made me think. I would palm roll it but will my hair be stronger?
@evealexsis i went back and forth all the time. this vid is a couple of years old. i dont even have locs anymore. but towards the end, i latched about twice a year and palmrolled inbetween when i wanted to neaten it up. the strength of your hair is depedant on a lot of things: how tight you latch/plamroll, how often you latch/palmroll, the overall health and thickness of your hair, ect. so i can't say if it will or won't be stronger.
@evealexsis Don't go back to those, tools they definitly do thin the hair, you'll be much better off palm rolling and for extra hold and strength use the backcombing technique. That's all that's required along with your regular shampoo's & cond.for healthy locs. I'm licensed and do not recommend these tools at all. I can alway's tell the difference between the natural locs and those being done with tools. You can see right through them! GBU! Peace!
Is there anyway to do this on straight hair? I'm white i got dreadlocks about 2 months ago and yours look awesome. the other thing is mine are pretty big. i have 34 on my whole head =/ if its possible also where could i get one?
@instinktgraffiti any type of hair can be interlocked. your locs sound pretty big, so i would suggest you make your own home-made latching tool. look around on youtube, there are a few vids about how to make a home-made tool, or you can finger latch.
ive been growing mylocks fa like 7 months now i did not know that stylyin my locks made the roots thin thin so now what should i so to let my roots catch back thick again? wait about 4 or 3 months before i thighten up again so i will have lots of new growth?
I've been reading that crocheting and latch hook is very damaging to locks, it looks really good for a while but putting the medal through your hair Slowly brakes off the Roots..
Now I had locks for ten years now, I was like you, i palm rolled for years, then i fingered it like using a latchhook, then the last few years i started using the latch hook tool.. Slowly seeing my locks thinner and alot of loose or broking short hair at the roots, now i'm going back the palmroll.
@HealingHerbsByRene this is very intresting info, as i have never heard it before. i do have slight thinning, but this is b/c the latching makes my locs more compact. i also have a little more frizziness, but this is b/c latching doesn't catch all the stray little hairs like palmrolling does. i'm going to theorize that people who experience this are latching too tightly and too often. you can get the same kind of damage from palmrolling too tightly or too often. thanks for your comment!
@HealingHerbsByRene Even though it's been some time since you wrote this I felt you need that confirmation that you are absolutely right the tools do begin to thin the hair. I've suggested to people to stop, and their hair regained it's thickness and strength back almost emediately. I am a licensed Cosmetologist specialising in locs and I refuse to use these tools, The only tool I use from time to time is a comb to back comb the hair for a tighter twist. Love to share!
i just want to say that i love your dreads!! where can i find the nappy lock tool? is there a website that you ordered yours from or a particular store you purchased it from?
I have a question. What is the point of locs? Is it strictly for the look of it, or does it help to grow your hair longer? I'm just wondering because I've seen people getting rid of dreads and they just have to cut them off almost at the scalp. So what happens when you get tired of them? You lose all your hair?
@garciajennifer223 thats a tough question. some people wear locs for religious reasons. some for cultural reasons. and for some its just a hairstyle. some people DO wear them to be able to have long hair. its a protective style, so it helps people to grow their hair. locs are a semi-permanent hairstyle. the easiest way to get rid of them is to cut them off. but they can be taken down, but it can take WEEKS depending on how long you've had locs and ur hair texture.
Thank you! this was very helpful. I am trying to start latching my locks from scratch and your explanation plus the visual made a lot more sense than other peoples videos I've watched. thanks again!
Ok I started my hair by twist, not 2 stran twist but the reg twist. Now I latch it, the root of it is nice but the dread it self is frizzy. How do I get the dread itself to not be so frizzy???
How will my hai look of 2months of reg twist then 3 weeks of latching???
@GAslickmouf there's not really anything you can do about frizzy locs. it just a part of the process. as your locs mature, the frizziness will die down. as for the latching i frequently switch between latching and palmrolling. there really isn't a noticeable difference in the look of my loc. i've been going back and forth for the past two years.
Lillydot, your video was the clearest and most informed of all the videos of latch hooking I've seen. The lighting was perfect and you could actually SEE what you were doing. Thank you for truly sharing the artform of latching. Peace and Blessing.
no. you go through 1,then through 3. when you go through 3, you've closed up the Y in 1. then you go through 1 and you've closed the Y in 3. so i go back and forth through those two points, each time closing the Y from the previous point
i'll go through 12, then 9. if there's still some new growth left, i'll go through 12 again. still more new growth? go through 9 again. i'll just keep on doing this until its latch down to the scalp.
Hello, I have a question. I started my locks with palmrolling, but the other day at the hairdresser my loctician 'latched' my dreads! I don't want my dreads to be latched because I don't like how thin they get .. but will the one set of latching affect the way my hair looks? Thanks!
i'm not sure, since i've never seen this before, but you MIGHT have a slight indent on your loc where the latched part is. but i don't think it would be too noticible. many people go back and forth between latching and palmrolling and there isn't a big difference in the look of their locs.
i gotta question...if im startin my locs could i use this technique? if they are short (2-3 inches) and i have sorta straight hair (black ppl straight hair)?
This is the cutest video! Kudos to you young sister, your locs are beautiful!! You are so articulate and your video is very informative. I am 55, and my hair is locked and I love it!! I really needed this info for maintenance. I couldn't figure out how to tighten. Well Done!
AHHH! Locs are so friggin awesome! Since its basically turning your hair into rope you can use the loc to sew itself up, and you can use 2 locs to tie back like a hair tie! So sweet! Its like a hair style that maintains itself xD
Agh can't wait to get my locs! Why does your hair color change color about mid way, is this a color styling, or is just the tone that happens to the locs naturally?
DAMN! I never knew that that tone took so much preparation! Man, locks last a long time! I'm gonna have to set my foundations good! :O I got crappy white person hair, well crappy to section off my hair and knot up for dreads. Thanks for the reply, I always wondered how that look is accomplish.
well, i did it the hard way cause i wanted RED hair. but really, if your hair is black, you can just bleach it for a few minutes and it will lift to this color. the less time you leave the bleach on , the more subtle the lightening will be. i HAD to bleach my hair white blonde for the red to take as brightly as i wanted it.
i don't use any sort of holding product or gel in my hair when i latch. thats part of the point of latching, you don't need to use any products which cuts down on the buildup you might get.
where did you get your little adornment? or did you make it? If you made it then that's freakin awesome haha bc i tried to make some and it was terrible!! haha
i've heard a lot of people talk about saltwater and how it may help hair loc faster and other things. i've never used saltwater spritzes and i don't swim in the ocean (even though i live in a coastal town!) so i don't know much about it.
well, my hair was a tiny bit thicker when i palmrolled. but as it got longer, it got more compact and lost some volume. the latched hair is slightly thinner than palmrolled hair, but it will swell up as times goes on so you won't notice the difference.
thanks for the video! so far i'm not really sure if i like the latchhook method...it is very time consuming and with some of my locks i feel like it is doing more harm than good! but i do like the fact that you can wash your hair without it unraveling...but i prefer to see/feel my coils coiling after a palm roll...decisions decisions hehe
but that the great thing about latching! i never have to "set aside" time to do my hair! i could latch a few locs for ten minutes while waiting for my pizza to heat up in the oven, or i could latch for a half hour while watching a tv show. i almost never latch my entire head all at one time, just a few locs here and there as i see fit. i LOVE it!
wow. sorry i missed this question. yes, the latch part will thicken out more as it is washed. but it will still always be slightly thinner than the palmrolled part. part of that is the length, too. my hair was so long, the weight of it was making my locs thinner as well.
thank u sooo much, this was very informative, i've just started about 3 months to four now and i was scared of the needle or latching, i've heard alot of horror stories. well i'm not sure if latching and needle is the same thing. ooh well. thanks a million
to me latching is better coz, it does come apart so quickly. when i latch my hair it lost up a month or more, and i wash it every week... Thinner locks is mt style,so i don't thin a all. Nice vid..
Great Video! thanks for the tutorial it's very helpful. I started my locs journey 7months ago and had to be rescued by my sister-in-law at one point cos my hair started crawling! I palm-roll but would like to try latch hooking, but was put off by all the rotations (sounded too much like a mathematical problem). So thank you very much for making it simple.
sure. i know of a few people who latch like once of twice a year and palmroll the rest of the time, or who switch back and forth between the two methods. you can use both methods if you want. it safe for your hair.
thanks for the tutorial, you elaborated well! prior to watching this video, i had no idea what latching was, just heard of it. And I certainly wasn't familiar with the NSEW rotation.
Do you have a palm-rolling video? I want to start locs by the end of august
i'm not sure i understand ur question. you mean when you first start locing? it wouldn't make much of a difference because all of the hair that grew in after would be latched. you would end up with an inch or two of palmrolled hair and the rest latched. i SWITCHED from plamrolling. as of now, i have about a foot of palmrooled hair and a foot of latched hair, but i get more and more latched hair every month but the amout of palmrolled hair stays the same. did i understand ur question correctly?
I don't have thick locks... mine are thin but I tried the latch and it thinned my hair out so it depends on the hair texture and thickness... I'm tender headed so it hurts...hello
What size napplock do you use? Do you have problems getting the fatter part of your locs (the end) through the thinner section at the root? My locs are almost above my bottom and I started pamrolling first then I latched. My palm roll section is fatter and I made a tool to use but i have difficulty sometimes getting the fat locs through the thin section when latching. Which is why I ask what size tool you use. I ordered the medium...
hi. i have the meduin tool, too. i do have 4 or 5 locs which have fatter tips that are a bit of a hassle to pull through. and i have one with a really fat tip whic is painful to pull through. so, with that one loc, i don't latch as often, so there is more loose hair at the root and when i do latch, its easier casue there's more space to pull the loc through.
i may be just repeating a question, but if i was to latch method braidlocks with medium to thin hair, do you reckon the locks would be thinner than if i twisted/palm-rolled?
your loc size mostly depends on the parts at the root. you might have slightly thicker locs with palmrolling, but if your hair is already thin, you may want to latch because latched kocs are stronger and you'de be less prone to thinning and breakage. but, overall, i'd say there's not much of a size difference.
well ,the key to healthy locs is moderation. you can overlatch as easly as you overtwist them. but latch locs do tend to be stronger, especially when it comes to really skinny locs.
its a matter of personal preference. i used to latch dry but now i like to latch wet cause as the hair dries, it shrinks and you get a tight smooth latch. but some people don't like that because they say as their hair dries, the latching gets too tight. try both, see what you like better. i still tend to latch the back of my hair only a little damp and the front wet. it's what works for me but it may not work for you.
the eventual thickness of your loc is determined by the size of your root bed. when i first latch newgrowth, its a bit thinner than the loc, but a couple of shampoos and week or two later, it thickens up. the latched part of my locs is just about the same size as the palmrolled part.
it last indefinately. think of latching as an intricate way of knotting your hair. once you put that "knot" in, it stays. it doesn't come out when you wash or swim or any of that stuff.
okay...one more question...does it make the loc stronger if its weak? i have some locs that have become kind of thin and i have had to combine two or three of them together...do you think latching will help this? thanks....
yes. one of the reasons sisterlocks or any other micro loc are able to work is because the latching makes the loc incredible strong. i don't have micro locs, but the latching has added strength to my locs as well. I had two locs near my temples that were a little thin and weak and worried me. since i've started latching, i can feel the strength in the loc and i no longer have any worries about them breaking or possibly falling off.
i have loc extentions but my hair isnt locked yet is there any way i can do this even though my hair isnt locked???and still be able to retwist my hair???
sure. you can latch the roots as they grow in. and you can still re-twist. a lot of people latch twice a year or so and palmroll in between because they like the look of palmrolled locs as well.
Great video. I made my latch tool out of copper wire. It only costs .25 Cents for a yard and the tool is more pliable than the paper clip. Your locs are beautiful.
YES GIRL! loves the locks and now when my friend ask why I dont palmroll and why my locks can stay and be so little ill refer them to this vid! lol keep making vids!
i use to twist my hair i found that it was weakening the hair, then i heard about interlocking and i have been using this method for a year now. i have made my own tools using small and large paperclips. My hair is a lot stronger i wash my locks twice a week using tea tree shampoo and olive oil to keep it moist
there really is no "best" way. it all depends on how you want your locs to look and how much maintainence you want to do. if you palm rool, you may have to retwist with every shampoo. if you latch, you won't have to do that. palmrolled locs are fluffier in the beginning. latched locs look smaller (imo). i persoanlly love the look of palm rolled locs, but i love the convenience of latched locs. so, in the end, the choice is up to you.
So, the only difference between latching and interlocking is latching is 2 points and interlocking is 4? Anyway, neat concept. I like the way you explained that the more points the thinner the dread will be. Great!
no, latching is a form of interlocking. you can use a latch hook, which is where the term came from. you can interlock with the nappylocs tool. you can interlock with a crochet needle. but latching is one of the more common terms for interlocking, so i use them interchangeably.
thank you for showing how to latch. I am now latching my hair for a month now, and it is better for my hair and mind! I would always overtwist my locks, and I like them very neat. I would twist them when I am nervous as well, but since I am latching, I dont do that anymore! My hair is looking lovely! I wash with teatree shampoo, condition with shea butter and olive oil.
maybe. i get bored with a hair style after a while. i've had it all- perms, relaxers, braids, afros. never a weave though. too scared of a needle going near my head! i'm really really close to cutting it now. not all off, just much shorter. but i wouldn't be surprised if i decided to go with a different hairstyle in the future.
I was just reading about this method online earlier today; how lucky that I ran across your vid on my random search. Your explanation and visual aid is perfect! Thanks so much for sharing.
hey... i have short hair, about 2-3 inches in length, and i want to start my dreds again, for the second time. this time i want to start out latching. is there a video that demonstrates how to do it with short hair, starting out?
thank you so much for this video...this was verrry helpful. I have thin hair and my locs are thin. I am truly thinking about switching to latching, one quick question. Is it better to re tighten before or after washing? Im thinking while wet my hair may break easier while latching??
well, i tend to latch most of my hair dry and then shampoo becasue that way, if i latch it too tight, the shampooing will loosen it. also, you're less likely to tangle locs together, especially in the back where you can't see what you're doing! i latch the front two rows wet because it makes a tighter, smoother, less frizzy loc. i like my front to look neat. but, honestly, one way is not better than the other. its mostly about personal preference.
Hey Lily, How come this is the first time I saw this video? Any How, I Think you did an excellent job explaining the the different pt rotations. Keep the videos coming! Blessings!
Wow - that is excellent...I started latching then reverted to palm rolling, but with the lack of funds i am looking to maintain myself again, but was aprehensive as to pulling the hair through...(i previously used a latch hook and would always be catching other locs)I like the way that you use the tool at the end of the loc to pull through which I suppose would be quicker...I am going to latch mine tomorrow...lol...thanks
usually nothing, if i'm just randomly latching during the day. if i latch before i shampoo, i oil my scalp after the shampoo and use a leave-in on my locs, but i do that anyways after i shampoo, whether i latch or not. so basically, the answer is nothing.
Thank you so much for this. I just finished doing my first retightening today and was wondering what the difference between the rotations. Your locks are beautiful.
its a loc cuff that i made. just a piece of copper wire that i twisted with a little red bead. check out my loc jewelry video to get a better pic of it and see how i made it.
you have to pass the tool between the two arms of the Y. so you're kinda skewering the arms together and that closes the gap. it's kinda hard to explain without a visual. i hope i explained it clearly.
this video was very hopeful. my hair has been interlocked by my loctician cus my hair is soft n will take longer 2 lock. but i the mapped out directions u gave was very clear.
its the nappylocs tool. you can buy it online. just google nappy locks tool. i think it cost about 15 bucks, but i think its the best tool out there right now. i DEFINATELY can't get the hang of the latch hook or the crochet needle!
ooooh goodness! this color is from years of bleaching and adding and red i could find. followed by a year of using a Loreal highlighter with a lifter built in, followed by a few months of using henna. i have no idea how to re-create this! sorry.
I alternate between latching and palmrolling and I don't notice a difference either. But... I have noticed that there could possibly be more lint in the palmrolled sections perhaps due to it beeing "loose" for longer? I'm not sure, but that's all I've seen so far. Thanks for the vid.
Loved your video and explanation. I saw another video, and she didn't explain the tool clear enough for me. I had to stop the video... couldn't take it anymore.
thanks a million great instructions and explaination. i have 504 locks (sister locs) and am very tired of the secrecy behind the locks not to mention paying 35 per hour for retightening. My locktitian claims i cannot take the retightening class to learn to do itmyself because my locs aren't settled WHATEVER!!!
Wow i know you don't know me but you have so many locs all together how long do it takes for you to get done all your sis locs? I got like 138 locs in my head.
OMFG this so so freaking helpful lmao and the crazy part I knew this months ago the instructions ive read or watched so difficult to understand hahaha lmao

i gotta question...if im startin my locs could i use this technique? if they are short (2-3 inches) and i have sorta straight hair (black ppl straight hair)?

yes. check out NubianLockedPrincess channel. she has a video about starting locs with latching.

Where do you purchase the nappy lock tool? Could I also use a latch hook craft tool?
woodenshoelane 2 years ago
nappylocsDOTcom. you could use a latch hook, too. some people use a crochet hook, some use a bobby pin. i just find the nappylocs tool easier to use.

This is the cutest video! Kudos to you young sister, your locs are beautiful!! You are so articulate and your video is very informative. I am 55, and my hair is locked and I love it!! I really needed this info for maintenance. I couldn't figure out how to tighten. Well Done!
woodenshoelane 2 years ago
thank you!
lillydot 2 years ago
AHHH! Locs are so friggin awesome! Since its basically turning your hair into rope you can use the loc to sew itself up, and you can use 2 locs to tie back like a hair tie! So sweet! Its like a hair style that maintains itself xD
kyleismrsmiley 2 years ago
Agh can't wait to get my locs! Why does your hair color change color about mid way, is this a color styling, or is just the tone that happens to the locs naturally?
kyleismrsmiley 2 years ago
its coloring. over a five year period my hair was bleached, dyed red, let the red fade, used henna, and thats the color i was left with.
lillydot 2 years ago
DAMN! I never knew that that tone took so much preparation! Man, locks last a long time! I'm gonna have to set my foundations good! :O I got crappy white person hair, well crappy to section off my hair and knot up for dreads. Thanks for the reply, I always wondered how that look is accomplish.
kyleismrsmiley 2 years ago
well, i did it the hard way cause i wanted RED hair. but really, if your hair is black, you can just bleach it for a few minutes and it will lift to this color. the less time you leave the bleach on , the more subtle the lightening will be. i HAD to bleach my hair white blonde for the red to take as brightly as i wanted it.
lillydot 2 years ago
ah okay, not sure I wanna try when I get mine matured cause I might mess up, but it still looks really cool.
kyleismrsmiley 2 years ago
Do you use bee's wax when you latching?
ndependentwoman 2 years ago
i don't use any sort of holding product or gel in my hair when i latch. thats part of the point of latching, you don't need to use any products which cuts down on the buildup you might get.
lillydot 2 years ago
where did you get your little adornment? or did you make it? If you made it then that's freakin awesome haha bc i tried to make some and it was terrible!! haha

Thanks for this. I guess locks will thicken quicker maybe if in saltwater a lot too? You have a great manner :)
SoorAurora 2 years ago
i've heard a lot of people talk about saltwater and how it may help hair loc faster and other things. i've never used saltwater spritzes and i don't swim in the ocean (even though i live in a coastal town!) so i don't know much about it.

tks for the video girl!!but i wan' to know if you're waste volum with that method(sorry for my english :s i'm french )
lovelysayana 2 years ago
i'm sorry! i'm not sure what you mean by "waste volume". do you mean is my hair thinner?
lillydot 2 years ago
lol it's my fault: my english is so bad.
huuuum how can i say it??
have u got more hair...more...volume(lol sorry i dnt know how to say it)when you used the palmorolling metod?
tks a lot to answer :) :)
lovelysayana 2 years ago
well, my hair was a tiny bit thicker when i palmrolled. but as it got longer, it got more compact and lost some volume. the latched hair is slightly thinner than palmrolled hair, but it will swell up as times goes on so you won't notice the difference.
lillydot 2 years ago
okay :) :) tks a looooooooot ;)
lovelysayana 2 years ago
thanks for the video! so far i'm not really sure if i like the latchhook method...it is very time consuming and with some of my locks i feel like it is doing more harm than good! but i do like the fact that you can wash your hair without it unraveling...but i prefer to see/feel my coils coiling after a palm roll...decisions decisions hehe
LightofBeauty 2 years ago
but that the great thing about latching! i never have to "set aside" time to do my hair! i could latch a few locs for ten minutes while waiting for my pizza to heat up in the oven, or i could latch for a half hour while watching a tv show. i almost never latch my entire head all at one time, just a few locs here and there as i see fit. i LOVE it!
lillydot 2 years ago
Thank you you don't know how much you helped me out ;)
MrsGregoryLee 2 years ago
i notice that the latched part is thinner, will it thicken out like the bottom part of the loc? and how long will it take?
bbelva 2 years ago
wow. sorry i missed this question. yes, the latch part will thicken out more as it is washed. but it will still always be slightly thinner than the palmrolled part. part of that is the length, too. my hair was so long, the weight of it was making my locs thinner as well.
lillydot 2 years ago
thank u sooo much, this was very informative, i've just started about 3 months to four now and i was scared of the needle or latching, i've heard alot of horror stories. well i'm not sure if latching and needle is the same thing. ooh well. thanks a million
prettyjagirljafreak 2 years ago
a needle? i've never heard of that method. tell me more!
lillydot 2 years ago
why not just palmroll your hair?
tummielvr 2 years ago
because i like the benefits of latching more
lillydot 2 years ago
to me latching is better coz, it does come apart so quickly. when i latch my hair it lost up a month or more, and i wash it every week... Thinner locks is mt style,so i don't thin a all. Nice vid..
xxxyogaloverxxx 2 years ago
thanks the video helped me alot. I used to palm roll and it always came apart

So thank you very much for making it simple.

lillydot 2 years ago
sure. i know of a few people who latch like once of twice a year and palmroll the rest of the time, or who switch back and forth between the two methods. you can use both methods if you want. it safe for your hair.
lillydot 2 years ago
you are too cute
thanks for the tutorial, you elaborated well! prior to watching this video, i had no idea what latching was, just heard of it. And I certainly wasn't familiar with the NSEW rotation.
Do you have a palm-rolling video? I want to start locs by the end of august

i can't remember the website off the top of my head. google nappylocs tool and it should lead you right to the site.
lillydot 2 years ago
Thanks for explaining the different textures for the latching rotations. You really cleared up the concept for me.
Starshadow1000 2 years ago
i'm not sure i understand ur question. you mean when you first start locing? it wouldn't make much of a difference because all of the hair that grew in after would be latched. you would end up with an inch or two of palmrolled hair and the rest latched. i SWITCHED from plamrolling. as of now, i have about a foot of palmrooled hair and a foot of latched hair, but i get more and more latched hair every month but the amout of palmrolled hair stays the same. did i understand ur question correctly?

I don't have thick locks... mine are thin but I tried the latch and it thinned my hair out so it depends on the hair texture and thickness... I'm tender headed so it hurts...hello
DJChinChin 2 years ago
the nappylocs tool is the business. it's great for retightening locs & it doesn't pull or tear the hair.
glamazon67 2 years ago
Hi lillydot,
What size napplock do you use? Do you have problems getting the fatter part of your locs (the end) through the thinner section at the root? My locs are almost above my bottom and I started pamrolling first then I latched. My palm roll section is fatter and I made a tool to use but i have difficulty sometimes getting the fat locs through the thin section when latching. Which is why I ask what size tool you use. I ordered the medium...
tresip 2 years ago
hi. i have the meduin tool, too. i do have 4 or 5 locs which have fatter tips that are a bit of a hassle to pull through. and i have one with a really fat tip whic is painful to pull through. so, with that one loc, i don't latch as often, so there is more loose hair at the root and when i do latch, its easier casue there's more space to pull the loc through.
lillydot 2 years ago
Very informative & helpful! T.Y.
Jeaniebpt06 2 years ago
You explained it PERFECT!!! Thanks a bunch :D
lexii314 2 years ago
i may be just repeating a question, but if i was to latch method braidlocks with medium to thin hair, do you reckon the locks would be thinner than if i twisted/palm-rolled?
jaredino2004 2 years ago
your loc size mostly depends on the parts at the root. you might have slightly thicker locs with palmrolling, but if your hair is already thin, you may want to latch because latched kocs are stronger and you'de be less prone to thinning and breakage. but, overall, i'd say there's not much of a size difference.
lillydot 2 years ago
Love your locs!!
Just wondering if I should stop retwisting my locs and start palming or latching them. I'm looking for the safest method when it comes to breakage
RiderABC187 2 years ago
well ,the key to healthy locs is moderation. you can overlatch as easly as you overtwist them. but latch locs do tend to be stronger, especially when it comes to really skinny locs.

When interlocking my hair shou[ld it be wet or dry...does it matter?
Eriain 2 years ago
its a matter of personal preference. i used to latch dry but now i like to latch wet cause as the hair dries, it shrinks and you get a tight smooth latch. but some people don't like that because they say as their hair dries, the latching gets too tight. try both, see what you like better. i still tend to latch the back of my hair only a little damp and the front wet. it's what works for me but it may not work for you.
lillydot 2 years ago
thank you, I can't wait to try it!
Eriain 2 years ago
omg your locks are so pretty, i wish my hair could lock like that :/
tjokke 2 years ago
thank you!
lillydot 2 years ago
but sumtin bothers me about intelrockin....the dreads are super thin!!! damn is it gonna get fatter again some day? its been 3 month now!!
rise313 2 years ago
the eventual thickness of your loc is determined by the size of your root bed. when i first latch newgrowth, its a bit thinner than the loc, but a couple of shampoos and week or two later, it thickens up. the latched part of my locs is just about the same size as the palmrolled part.
lillydot 2 years ago
and if u do how long will it take to lock???
Melraculous 2 years ago
everyone's hair locs at a differnt rate, so i can't really answer that. it also depends a lot on your hair texture.
lillydot 2 years ago
i'ver watched a lt of tapes yours was more detailed ty
isipp662 2 years ago
your welcome! i'm glad it was helpful.
lillydot 2 years ago
so how long does ur lock last when u latch it?
nfernandes2005 2 years ago
it last indefinately. think of latching as an intricate way of knotting your hair. once you put that "knot" in, it stays. it doesn't come out when you wash or swim or any of that stuff.
lillydot 2 years ago
okay...one more question...does it make the loc stronger if its weak? i have some locs that have become kind of thin and i have had to combine two or three of them together...do you think latching will help this? thanks....
nfernandes2005 2 years ago
yes. one of the reasons sisterlocks or any other micro loc are able to work is because the latching makes the loc incredible strong. i don't have micro locs, but the latching has added strength to my locs as well. I had two locs near my temples that were a little thin and weak and worried me. since i've started latching, i can feel the strength in the loc and i no longer have any worries about them breaking or possibly falling off.
lillydot 2 years ago
thank you...will do!
nfernandes2005 2 years ago
i have loc extentions but my hair isnt locked yet is there any way i can do this even though my hair isnt locked???and still be able to retwist my hair???
Melraculous 2 years ago
sure. you can latch the roots as they grow in. and you can still re-twist. a lot of people latch twice a year or so and palmroll in between because they like the look of palmrolled locs as well.
lillydot 2 years ago

i use to twist my hair i found that it was weakening the hair, then i heard about interlocking and i have been using this method for a year now. i have made my own tools using small and large paperclips. My hair is a lot stronger i wash my locks twice a week using tea tree shampoo and olive oil to keep it moist

whats the best method to maintain locs that are about 1-3 inches long?
Claudia900 2 years ago
there really is no "best" way. it all depends on how you want your locs to look and how much maintainence you want to do. if you palm rool, you may have to retwist with every shampoo. if you latch, you won't have to do that. palmrolled locs are fluffier in the beginning. latched locs look smaller (imo). i persoanlly love the look of palm rolled locs, but i love the convenience of latched locs. so, in the end, the choice is up to you.
lillydot 2 years ago
love this. very informative!
cheleski68 3 years ago
So, the only difference between latching and interlocking is latching is 2 points and interlocking is 4? Anyway, neat concept. I like the way you explained that the more points the thinner the dread will be. Great!
mody1281 3 years ago
no, latching is a form of interlocking. you can use a latch hook, which is where the term came from. you can interlock with the nappylocs tool. you can interlock with a crochet needle. but latching is one of the more common terms for interlocking, so i use them interchangeably.

thank you for showing how to latch. I am now latching my hair for a month now, and it is better for my hair and mind! I would always overtwist my locks, and I like them very neat. I would twist them when I am nervous as well, but since I am latching, I dont do that anymore! My hair is looking lovely! I wash with teatree shampoo, condition with shea butter and olive oil.

would you ever take them out?
MayoHELLO 3 years ago
maybe. i get bored with a hair style after a while. i've had it all- perms, relaxers, braids, afros. never a weave though. too scared of a needle going near my head! i'm really really close to cutting it now. not all off, just much shorter. but i wouldn't be surprised if i decided to go with a different hairstyle in the future.

jaycenac 3 years ago
thank you so much for this video...this was verrry helpful. I have thin hair and my locs are thin. I am truly thinking about switching to latching, one quick question. Is it better to re tighten before or after washing? Im thinking while wet my hair may break easier while latching??
jaycenac 3 years ago
well, i tend to latch most of my hair dry and then shampoo becasue that way, if i latch it too tight, the shampooing will loosen it. also, you're less likely to tangle locs together, especially in the back where you can't see what you're doing! i latch the front two rows wet because it makes a tighter, smoother, less frizzy loc. i like my front to look neat. but, honestly, one way is not better than the other. its mostly about personal preference.
lillydot 3 years ago
You did a beautiful job explaining.
Thanks!!!

Wow - that is excellent...I started latching then reverted to palm rolling, but with the lack of funds i am looking to maintain myself again, but was aprehensive as to pulling the hair through...(i previously used a latch hook and would always be catching other locs)I like the way that you use the tool at the end of the loc to pull through which I suppose would be quicker...I am going to latch mine tomorrow...lol...thanks

what do you use on ur scalp after you latch hook ur hair??
chiefboy20dj 3 years ago
usually nothing, if i'm just randomly latching during the day. if i latch before i shampoo, i oil my scalp after the shampoo and use a leave-in on my locs, but i do that anyways after i shampoo, whether i latch or not. so basically, the answer is nothing.

Is there anyway to get rid of the "Y" shaped base due to latching in the same direction??
honeybun705 3 years ago
you have to pass the tool between the two arms of the Y. so you're kinda skewering the arms together and that closes the gap. it's kinda hard to explain without a visual. i hope i explained it clearly.

I alternate between latching and palmrolling and I don't notice a difference either. But... I have noticed that there could possibly be more lint in the palmrolled sections perhaps due to it beeing "loose" for longer? I'm not sure, but that's all I've seen so far. Thanks for the vid.
