Lucille Ball was very fond of Carol Burnett. And they worked together often on each other's TV series' and specials. Probably next only to her own daugther, Lucie Arnaz, Burnett was Lucy's greatest protege.

Burnett said Lucy never failed to send her flowers on her birthday, and even on the day Lucy died (which, coincidentally, happened to be on Burnett's birthday), Carol still received the flowers.

It must have been one of the last things Lucy did, sending Burnett her birthday bouquet.

@typedink It's not the cigarettes...or it's not just that...Lucy never had proper vocal training...that high-pitched voice you hear on "Lucy" was not hers. She pushed her voice up an octave to make the character sound more innocent. Pushing her voice up an octave, having to project her voice for the studio audience and the mics (which obviously aren't as good as they are now), and the lack of proper vocal training changed her voice over time.
