respect to you DKP4 im the same !! but what a fucking band !! lucky enough to have seen them round europe at different festivals !! they always blew the other bands off the stage gonna miss them !! RIP REM !! ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREAT BANDS !!! and to the 2 people that dislike this you r either deaf or utter and complete cunts whose idea of music is some reality show wannabe !! leave the real music to people that know what real music is and it aint justin beiber !!
Did Peter end the solo a few beats early and they had to pull it together? Something unforeseen took place I think. Either way they righted the ship without a blink.
i just don't get it - sounds like a high school band playing in a garage - very amateurish drumming - jumbled guitars - they're just making noise - the song has great potential - rem should be very thankful that their fans don't have an ear for a quality performance
I have watched this video so many times that when I watched the origanal video version I had to shut it off. Was played way to Slow and sounded funny. This version is Far superior!!! Thanks for the post :)
REM had a couple hits, yes. But cannot hold a candle to the Tragically Hip. Once REM got the $80M and 8 record deal from Sony, they disappeared, while the Hip soar on. The frequency to REM is they are typical American punks...always were and will be. I'm not a hater, just an observer. But I really like this song. Good stuff.
@swassontelus what on earth are you prattling on about.....only had a couple of hits?!...cannot hold a candle to the tragically hip?! Because they of course had so many hits...like ummmmmm, nope it's gone.....dimwit
Go to Ultimate Guitar Tabs. com and pick the Guitar Pro tab. Best money I ever spent. I remove the guitar track and jam with the bass drums and Midi vocals. When your comfortable with the tempo, kill the Midi vocals and sing your guts out.
Get a recorder/mixer , BOSS, Korg, etc. Lay down a 95-96 BPM percussion pattern track, then lay the chords down listening to the pattern. Then lay a bass run track if you like. Then you can sing it on another track. It's tough to sing and play guitar with this song. You are right though, it isn't the easiest song to play rhythm wise.
Great fucking performance, though I like Bill Rieflin more on drums like Joey Waronker (that's his name, right?) Bill plays tighter. And of course the old Bill is the one I miss most, but although he left they still deliver awesome records!
it sounds different because it's LIVE...how many live shows have you been to? it's always different live...even if they're playing the same exact instruments...
you go to live shows for that feeling, that emotion...you just don't get that listening to an album
I always thought it had something to do with an incident where a guy mugged and beat the shit out of Dan Rather in New York while repeating the phrase "Kenneth what's the frequency "...I guess it has a few meanings ;).
Actually, from what I've learned, this songs actually about a person from the Baby-boomer generation trying to understand Gen X and their philosophy. At the time of this song (I was only 3 at the time, so I don't have any recollection :P), "What's the frequency, Kenneth" was a fairly popular phrase. At the end of the song, the person gives up , bitter and still confused.
What's cool as hell is that there are people in the audience half to three quarters REM's age and are totally into them. They're still potent, and will be for some time.
deseo que suban mas videos de ERM se los agradeceria de corazon porque todas sus canciones son bacanes saludos a todos los que escuchan y ven los videos.
supposed to be based on a true incident when some fella was attacked by a gang and one of the attackers kept shouting "what's the frequency, kenneth?" to the victim while he was being kicked and stamped. sounds a bit weird, but apparently it's true.
The victim was Kenneth Brokaw (TV news anchor) and the attacker was a mentally disturbed person who was convinced the Mr. Brokaw was transmitting mind control commands into the attackers brain via the TV. The attackers solution to stop the problem was to block the signal, but he need to know the frequency of the transmitions. So, the attacker beat Mr. Brokaw to try to get the information. While the attacker was beating Mr. Brokaw, he was screaming, "What's the frequency Kenneth!?!"
The title 'What's the Frequency Kenneth?' refers to the bizzare question one of two unknown assailants (one later identified as William Tager) repeatly asked CBS anchorman Dan Rather while physically assaulting him on Park Avenue in Manhattan in October 1986. The phrase Rather reported actually hearing in his police statement was "Kenneth, what' the frequency?". Both assailants escaped before police arrived.
William Tager (born November 9, 1947) is a Charlotte, North Carolina.
On August 31, 1994, Tager was arrested when he shot and killed Campbell TheronFrequency, a technician employed by NBC, outside of the stage of the Today show.
Psychiatrist Dr Park Dietz interviewed Tager. During these interviews, Tager stated he believed that the television networks were monitoring him and beaming messages into his head. Tager claimed that he had come from a parallel universe some 200 years in the future.
He also claimed that because everyone in the future had a double in the past, he had mistaken Rather for his future double, Vice President Kenneth Burroughs, and that he attacked Rather in an attempt to recover the 'frequency' information needed to stop the television signals being sent to his brain and return to his own time.
In 1996 Tager was convicted for the Montgomery murder and sentenced to a maximum of 25 years imprisonment for 1st degree manslaughter in the case of Montgomery's murder. As of 2005 he is incarcerated in Sing Sing prison in New York state. Tager was denied parole in 2007, and can reappear before the parole board in December of 2008.
Michael Stipe said of the incident: "It remains the premier unsolved American surrealist act of the 20th century. It's a misunderstanding that was scarily random, media hyped and just plain bizarre." On June 22, 1995, at Madison Square Garden, Rather accompanied the band during soundcheck to perform the song. The clip was shown prior to R.E.M.'s performance of "Crush with Eyeliner" on Late Show with David Letterman the following night.
The incident also inspired a lesser-known song called "Kenneth, What's The Frequency?" by the band Game Theory in 1987, as well as appearing in the title track for the 1995 album Junior Citizen by Poster Children.
