The single player experience is definitely lacking, but as a competitive fighting game (what actually matters) it is the best since SC2 imo. The online netcode is the best I have seen in any fighting game too.
Honestly, I don't understand how they thought half the things in the game were good ideas. No character endings, a 3 hour story mode, and no museum-type mode?
This game is lacking in more single-player content than even Soul Calibur 4.
If it weren't for the upgraded Character Creation system, I wouldn't even bother with this game. And even that has some maddeningly annoying flaws.
Hey, Project Soul: "Conflicting Equipment" is a bad fucking idea. It was bad in SC4, and its even worse in SC5.
Why take any characters out at all? just do like you did with other characters and don't involve them in the story, I wish they would actually bring back every character *besides the guest becasue that would require them get the rights again* including the bounus Characters, as well as weapons for each character. I personally enjoyed each character having a Soul Edge and a Soul Calibur, and the RPG style from number 3 I still say was the best story. bring it all back, the fans ask you....
My god can I finally just kill Inferno already along with whatever entity lives within Soul Calibur. I'm saying this because I've destroyed Soul Edge 3 count them 3 times and yet it comes back and plus I want Soul Calibur to die.

@punipunipunisher I think it's just the soundtrack and official trailers that were uploaded by 3rd parties that they're removing, not the Character Creation videos.
I like how they retired Cassandra and Sophitia so there wouldn't be 4 sword/shield users... and then with Pyrrha Omega and Elysium there's 4 anyway.
I liked the Story Mode well enough but I wish there was something for the other characters. If I didn't have the Artbook I'd have absolutely no idea what most of the characters are up to this time around, and I still don't know where the absentees are - or wtf happened between Xianghua and Kilik, et cetera.

I had no problem with them taking out some of the characters because some of their reasons why they were there kind of disappeared in SCIV. The war that Seong Mina and Yung Seoung were fighting in would more or less be over. Talim could sense when Souledge was a threat when she was young and I doubt she would a still have that sense at 32. And Setuka beating Mistrugi?....Right lol! The only one that doesn't make sense is Zasalamel the man is a immortal how could he not be apart of this?

@ArcueidBrunestrud Yeah, it is sad Namco didn't at least include the surviving old characters as cameos or at least CAS movesets.
Setsuka's iaijutsu style was never an Athenian style. What happened was Patroklos learned "Shinden Tsushima-ryu Battoujyutsu" from her and later began emulating an "Athenian" sword-and-shield style based on his aunt's. When Z.W.E.I. destroyed his sword and shield, Patroklos switched back to the fighting style he learned from Setsuka when he claimed Soul Calibur.
@ArcueidBrunestrud I agree the story mode was too short. I can only hope they can add entire characters as DLC... oh, wait, they can: Dampierre. Hopefully Zasalamel, Cassandra, and Talim will make a return as DLC as well. As for Tira vs. Sophitia... I guess that grudge could only end with a death, and Namco felt Tira had more of a role to play in V than Sophitia could. :(
I personally like Pyrrha Omega: she may not be Sophtia, but I think she's kinda cool. It's just me, though.
@Sh4d0wKat Well, Namco announced that there is gonna be some DLC latter on. So, if the requests come into play, we will get the characters again. And who knows, maybe some that were DLC in V will appear in VI.

It's like Sophitia's kids' story was meant to be a prelude to a bigger story mode that was never made. :( It's disappointing, honestly. That said, you and I can have fun avenging Sophitia all we like in VS mode, or if you miss Sophitia play the older (and better) titles of the series.

EPIC FAIL!! Where is Taki?! Don't give me that pathetic excuse that she's too old! Voldo is around 70 and he's still wriggling his old manly ass in the game. The story mode is non-existent and extra modes are missing as well. You just gave us new characters without explaining shit about them in story mode. You just don't take out characters we've been playing as for more than a decade and replace them with shitty characters without backstory. Disappointing sequel is disappointing.
I feel the pain of those who lost their character or had them replaced due to the pathetic excuse old age. The 17-year timeskip wasn't necessary, unless they were trying to cover up the fact that Viola and Z.W.E.I. were actually failed concept characters of SCIV, and what worse, the mediocre story mode wasn't that exciting as anticipated. However...I really love Creation mode, it's amazing what they did to it, and online mode isn't half bad :D. But in my opinion, they should've worked on it more

All of your story ideas are only good on paper. As a result on focusing only on Patroklos and Pyrrha, you give us a short and mediocre story of the highest order and didn't bother to include arcade endings.
@kaihedgie And it's a shame since that's all the focus and promotion of this game was about. It's basically UMvC3: gameplay over content. It's sad to see that Soul Calibur is turning into something like this, especially when the series lives and breathes off its story (regardless of the many people who'd disagree).

I'm not the only one pissed off at the lack of plot here! All they did is dress up Patroklos and Pyrrha's roles in the 'story' and didn't give ANY details or plot to ANY of the other characters! It feels so empty... I'm really disappointed...

With all do honesty, they didn't really say all that much, most of what they covered was already pretty obvious; they didn't explain why Talim and Zasalamel were cut (both of which are very much alive, they stated so in other interviews, and Zasalamel's SC4 ending implies that he'll be around for awhile), they were very popular characters, they had unique weapon techniques, Talim was the youngest so she would have been there, and it wouldn't have been that difficult to include them in the story.

Sucks that removed Yun, to be honest I never liked him as a character but I did enjoy using his style a lot. He was alright but him and Zasalamel's style were well fleshed out compared to the other characters that didn't make the cut. Guess It can't hurt to learn other styles.

@IKEsZONE I knew I wasn't the only one that felt it was rushed. SCV was announced at the end of May last year, and now 8 months later, the game is out. Yet TTT2 is already out on arcades, and is now enduring a 12+ month console port.
Also, I understand the whole "time skip thing," but why not have the characters who didn't return be in as unlockables anyway; I'm sure no one would have mind as long as they were still in the story (which I also heard isn't all that and feels rushed).
D: Is everyone still so bitter about not having your favorites that you're neglecting the newer characters? Like rosters are never supposed to change? Half of the characters had no legit backstory to tie into this new one. Taki can't retire and train a pupil? Seong-Mina can't stop chasing Yunseong? Xianghua can't have a child? With all due respect, I miss characters too. I miss Taki, Talim, Zasalamel, Setsuka, Seong Mi-Na, Hwang and Li Long. Speaking of those two, since Li Long was replaced in SC and Hwang in II, what if I had given up on the series altogether afterwards?
To get to the point, stories advance and when they do, new faces emerge and old ones go. We can take it personally...or we can give the newcomers a shot. Even if I don't like them, I will not let them hinder my enjoyment of the game.
I don't care about the swords! They are cool and all, but I have never wondered "which one is better" or "how do they exist". I care about the characters! Which SCV completely ruins, making characters I love retire to make space for others I don't care about!
Nobody gave a damn about Sophitia's brats, they were fine as just some distant background. They could've introduced all the new characters and still keep the others with some 3-year timeskip or so, if it wasn't for the baffling decision to bring Sophitia's spawn there, all grown up. Sacrificing most of the old cast for two new ones. Bleh.
Also, it's funny how all the males can still be there but the girls got the axe, because we all know a 35 y.o. woman is GROSS, no?
people hated talim becaused the people who loved her knew how to use her well. i was unstoppible with that girl. she was my fav. that said, the fact she's gone only means that for me at least, i'll be far more likely to be a greater threat with my other top fighters
@sspacechicken For over a decade Ivy researched the sword's home, a place she came to call "Astral Chaos". Her body, with the blood of the cursed sword flowing in its veins, seemed to have forgotten to age.
The reason the Korean characters were cut is that in 1607 Korea and Japan were no longer at war so they had no reason to be hunting Soul Edge. Talim... maybe she thought her duties as a priestess were too important, or in a worst-case scenario was burned as a witch given the strong anti non-Christian stance of colonial empires at the time. I personally hope it was the former. Setsuka and Cassandra trained Patroklos, so he's their legacy. As for Zasalamel... maybe he died and hasn't been reborn.
It's the second time Namco has pulled the same BS: skip 17-ish years, cut off the females, give males beards. I doubt many people play fighting games for the story, and when the developers sacrifice people's gameplay experience to make some "new chapter" or another... it's just not cool.

Kind of similar when SNK killed off Orochi and Iori teams in '97. It took them over a decade of asking to finally bring some of those characters back... nobody cared for either their "death" or the explanation of revival - people just want to play the characters they've put time into practicing, and have grown to like their "personalities"...

Besides, they can always give us new modes through DLC. A cheap money grabbing tactic, yes, but that's business for you these days.
@jvadude88 True, but where else would he learn Japanese and iaijutsu? Patroklos fought using iaijutsu before adopting a sword and shield, and as Alpha Patroklos he uses Japanese in some of his attacks.

What's the point of the new characters being there from a story aspect? we won't ever know how their stories pan out. I am all about making our own stories but damn give us something a profile at least with an ambiguous turn out.
@jvadude88 The developers wrote some novellas expanding some of the backstories, like the final battles between Siegfried and Nightmare II and between Tira and Sophitia, how Taki met Natsu, and Yoshimitsu II's origins, but they're all in Japanese. There's also additional information on the non-English character profiles - like why Xiba is constantly eating and his true relationships with Lexia and Kilik.
@VexxxMaster69 Which parts? Setsuka training Patroklos? No. The reason for removing the Korean characters? The whole reason Yun-seong, Hwang, and Seong Mi-na went/were sent after Soul Edge in the first place was to repel Japan. The Korea-Japan war lasted from 1592–1598, so they had no reason to be sent after it again in 1607. It would have been nice to know what happened to them, though. I have no idea what happened to Talim and Zasalamel, so those were just my best guesses.
Yeah sure there is some characters missing but the new one are pretty bad ass too!, The game is really really REALLY good, but i still try to get use to the new move and stuff, My main Maxi change quite a bit, just like the rest of the cast but im having a lot of fun playing sc5 :)
They should have tried harder to put Seung Mina or her replacement in this game, considering she was one of the original Soul Edge characters and a staple to the series.
seong-mina, yun-seong, talim, kilik, that girl that is with kilik all the time and zasalamel are characters i know that should've been in it, they where all young and zasalamel reincarnates everytime or is immortal, amy should've been back to she's young still too, i know taki will get old around that time, same as some others around her age like setsuka, but they have to be DLC of them, for the fans that like the old characters a lot from the older games.
@shinju112 Kilik is in the game and the girl with him all the time is Xianghua. Her daughter Lexia is in the game she plays exactly the same. Kililk is in the game he is a weapon master now you have to unlock him. Talim, Seong and Yun Seong are all incredibly two dimensional hate to say it but I'm glad there gone.
It hasn't even been a month, and this game is already on sale for $39.99 at Amazon. Wow. That tells you something.

I had no problem with them taking out some of the characters because some of their reasons why they were there kind of disappeared in SCIV. The war that Seong Mina and Yung Seoung were fighting in would more or less be over. Talim could sense when Souledge was a threat when she was young and I doubt she would a still have that sense at 32. And Setuka beating Mistrugi?....Right lol! The only one that doesn't make sense is Zasalamel the man is a immortal how could he not be apart of this?

@ArcueidBrunestrud Yeah, it is sad Namco didn't at least include the surviving old characters as cameos or at least CAS movesets.
Setsuka's iaijutsu style was never an Athenian style. What happened was Patroklos learned "Shinden Tsushima-ryu Battoujyutsu" from her and later began emulating an "Athenian" sword-and-shield style based on his aunt's. When Z.W.E.I. destroyed his sword and shield, Patroklos switched back to the fighting style he learned from Setsuka when he claimed Soul Calibur.

@ArcueidBrunestrud I agree the story mode was too short. I can only hope they can add entire characters as DLC... oh, wait, they can: Dampierre. Hopefully Zasalamel, Cassandra, and Talim will make a return as DLC as well. As for Tira vs. Sophitia... I guess that grudge could only end with a death, and Namco felt Tira had more of a role to play in V than Sophitia could. :(
I personally like Pyrrha Omega: she may not be Sophtia, but I think she's kinda cool. It's just me, though.

The story mode is non-existent and extra modes are missing as well. You just gave us new characters without explaining shit about them in story mode. I feel the pain of those who lost their character or had them replaced due to the pathetic excuse old age. The 17-year timeskip wasn't necessary, unless they were trying to cover up the fact that Viola and Z.W.E.I. were actually failed concept characters of SCIV, and what worse, the mediocre story mode wasn't that exciting as anticipated. However...I really love Creation mode, it's amazing what they did to it, and online mode isn't half bad :D. But in my opinion, they should've worked on it more

With all do honesty, they didn't really say all that much, most of what they covered was already pretty obvious; they didn't explain why Talim and Zasalamel were cut (both of which are very much alive, they stated so in other interviews, and Zasalamel's SC4 ending implies that he'll be around for awhile), they were very popular characters, they had unique weapon techniques, Talim was the youngest so she would have been there, and it wouldn't have been that difficult to include them in the story.

@IKEsZONE I knew I wasn't the only one that felt it was rushed. SCV was announced at the end of May last year, and now 8 months later, the game is out. Yet TTT2 is already out on arcades, and is now enduring a 12+ month console port.
Also, I understand the whole "time skip thing," but why not have the characters who didn't return be in as unlockables anyway; I'm sure no one would have mind as long as they were still in the story (which I also heard isn't all that and feels rushed).

With all due respect, I miss characters too. I miss Taki, Talim, Zasalamel, Setsuka, Seong Mi-Na, Hwang and Li Long. Speaking of those two, since Li Long was replaced in SC and Hwang in II, what if I had given up on the series altogether afterwards?
To get to the point, stories advance and when they do, new faces emerge and old ones go. We can take it personally...or we can give the newcomers a shot. Even if I don't like them, I will not let them hinder my enjoyment of the game.

Nobody gave a damn about Sophitia's brats, they were fine as just some distant background. They could've introduced all the new characters and still keep the others with some 3-year timeskip or so, if it wasn't for the baffling decision to bring Sophitia's spawn there, all grown up. Sacrificing most of the old cast for two new ones. Bleh.
Also, it's funny how all the males can still be there but the girls got the axe, because we all know a 35 y.o. woman is GROSS, no?

people hated talim becaused the people who loved her knew how to use her well. i was unstoppible with that girl. she was my fav. that said, the fact she's gone only means that for me at least, i'll be far more likely to be a greater threat with my other top fighters

The reason the Korean characters were cut is that in 1607 Korea and Japan were no longer at war so they had no reason to be hunting Soul Edge. Talim... maybe she thought her duties as a priestess were too important, or in a worst-case scenario was burned as a witch given the strong anti non-Christian stance of colonial empires at the time. I personally hope it was the former. Setsuka and Cassandra trained Patroklos, so he's their legacy. As for Zasalamel... maybe he died and hasn't been reborn.

It's the second time Namco has pulled the same BS: skip 17-ish years, cut off the females, give males beards. I doubt many people play fighting games for the story, and when the developers sacrifice people's gameplay experience to make some "new chapter" or another... it's just not cool.

Kind of similar when SNK killed off Orochi and Iori teams in '97. It took them over a decade of asking to finally bring some of those characters back... nobody cared for either their "death" or the explanation of revival - people just want to play the characters they've put time into practicing, and have grown to like their "personalities"...

@Sh4d0wKat You know why thats Bullshit, is because its NAMCOS job to tell us (As the creators) but as usual they just create amateur pornstars with half assed stories and then over hype the fuckin thing.
If that isn't bad enough some of the veterans don't even have a FUCKIN STORY.
FAIL... even as a product this game doesn't offer much keep lying to yourselves but you all know this doesn't even come close to SC2 or even SC3.

@in3vitableTIMING SCII is my favourite, but I find SCV is fun too. If you don't like it, though, then you don't like it. I personally enjoy the increased range of customization. Besides, they can always give us new modes through DLC. A cheap money grabbing tactic, yes, but that's business for you these days.

@jvadude88 True, but where else would he learn Japanese and iaijutsu? Patroklos fought using iaijutsu before adopting a sword and shield, and as Alpha Patroklos he uses Japanese in some of his attacks.

What's the point of the new characters being there from a story aspect? we won't ever know how their stories pan out. I am all about making our own stories but damn give us something a profile at least with an ambiguous turn out.
We could have worked from there.

@jvadude88 The developers wrote some novellas expanding some of the backstories, like the final battles between Siegfried and Nightmare II and between Tira and Sophitia, how Taki met Natsu, and Yoshimitsu II's origins, but they're all in Japanese. There's also additional information on the non-English character profiles - like why Xiba is constantly eating and his true relationships with Lexia and Kilik.

@VexxxMaster69 Which parts? Setsuka training Patroklos? No. The reason for removing the Korean characters? The whole reason Yun-seong, Hwang, and Seong Mi-na went/were sent after Soul Edge in the first place was to repel Japan. The Korea-Japan war lasted from 1592–1598, so they had no reason to be sent after it again in 1607. It would have been nice to know what happened to them, though. I have no idea what happened to Talim and Zasalamel, so those were just my best guesses.

Yeah sure there is some characters missing but the new one are pretty bad ass too!, The game is really really REALLY good, but i still try to get use to the new move and stuff, My main Maxi change quite a bit, just like the rest of the cast but im having a lot of fun playing sc5 :)

seong-mina, yun-seong, talim, kilik, that girl that is with kilik all the time and zasalamel are characters i know that should've been in it, they where all young and zasalamel reincarnates everytime or is immortal, amy should've been back to she's young still too, i know taki will get old around that time, same as some others around her age like setsuka, but they have to be DLC of them, for the fans that like the old characters a lot from the older games.

@shinju112 Kilik is in the game and the girl with him all the time is Xianghua. Her daughter Lexia is in the game she plays exactly the same. Kililk is in the game he is a weapon master now you have to unlock him. Talim, Seong and Yun Seong are all incredibly two dimensional hate to say it but I'm glad there gone.
