Ugly, but faster than a brand-new Ducati 1198S. I don't think that R1 is ugly, is ugly for people that didn't understand that this bike is the better liter-class motorcycle of 2009, better than a Honda, Suzuki, Ducati (1198s!!!), or Kawasaki.
Look for the MCN comparison and you'll know that this "civilian" MotoGP is everything more than ugly.
I'm a newbie, but I got an R1 and I'm learning how to figure out when to shift gear. I've been looking for someone to give a good explanation but none so far. If you can give some advice it would be great. Say, when do I change from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gear in term of mile per hour.
If you want you can run it all the way up to near read line then shift if you are in a hurry. Ride it any way that you want just don't go above red. Isn't an R1 a way bit to much for a beginner? Just be careful, that thing will get away on you faster than you can imagine.
must be scary to get that for your first bike. Changing gears: there is a good explanation in your manual. typically when shifting from first gear to second, shift around 20mph to be on the save side and to avoid wheelies. 40mph - 45mph, 2nd through 3rd, etc. up to 6th. You should take a MSF class.
engage 1st gear, open throthle, shift only when gets into red line and do that in every gear and do also your testament including me as only beneficiary.
Let me ask you in a different way. I know to start off you should be in first gear and you should shift into second gear as soon as possible.
1. 25mph, what gear?
2. 35mph, what gear?
3. 45mph, what gear?
4. 55mph, what gear?
5. 65mph, what gear? and so on.
Then what you are break or slowing down, when is the best time to shift down from each gear and if you are moving only about 5mph, should you be in first or second gear?
I know it is a stupid questions, but I have to ask.
Dude, you cant drive a bike like a R1 if you have to think about it. Its very dangerous because obviously you dont have the necessary experience. But, in a general way the best thing you can do is to get the " feeeling " about your bike. Your question is not relevant, you can ride in 5 gear and only be doing 40 miles. Get help from some personal friend, i cant teach you by internet. Sorry.
Dude my first bike was a 2008 CBR1000rr!!! So all that talk about too much power for a beginner isnt entirely true. I started slow but now im a very good rider. Now people i ride with say it seems as if i was riding for years. You have to get a feel for your bike. EVERY BIKE has a different feel even if its the same make/model/year. If you can drive a stickshift car then it would be easier to make the transition b/c the concept is the same. You can feel when to shift & you can hear it.
1. OK, how long can I stay on first gear when I am taking off?
2. When you are slowing for a turn, do you shift alway the way to first gear or stay on 2nd gear but pull in the clutch. I'm find with when to change gear on taking off but not too good on slowing down and down shifting.
I told you that I took the MSF course, but they don't help you at all. They are focusing on teaching then explaining all this crap to you. They teaches you how to get off neutral and then frist gear and then second gear and then sudden stop by pulling in the clutch, hit both breaks and down shift while you doing so.
sign up for track school or something I already did the experienced course for the MSF its just basic riding dos and donts. its helpful for beginners but its almost like reading and instruction manual. go to track school to learn the tricks....
You only need to red line your bike when you're trying to race or when you're trying to "feed" your bike, which means if ur just riding and you have a nice stretch of road w/no cars/cops. Duck down a & twist that baby & see what bitch can do!!!! ONLY when YOU are ready though!!! SAFE RIDING BRUH!!
If you have any other years' R1...and try this 09...you have a problem. The torque response at low/medium RPM is so much faster....and the engine sound...great bike.
hey guys this is a brand new motor (so give it a chance) from what i have seen they do suck (sound and torque) but from what PROFESSIONAL racers say it owns, i say give it 3 or 4 years then it should be 1 bad ass mofo and probably the best 1000 cc bike you can get but as of this 09 i dont think so i would either wait or get a gsxr 1000
what you say it's crap at the whole line... How can you wait 3-4 year to check the bike? - Its going to be damn old. New editions of sportsbikes come every 8 months (yeah, less than year from one edition to another). And every edition is relatively better than the previous one. You judge the motorbike without riding, thouching, smelling, seating on it? Does the crappy quality UTube vid provides you all these? dran... Its a matter of taste anyways. All 1000cc bikes are comparable. Matter of taste
I driven a few of this already when the company wanted to get expert opinions. They are alright for the price and whatnot. You definitly feel more torque with that uneven firing sequence thats for sure. I might get one if I ever get bored with my 08.

Notice how it sounds like a Desmosedici? That's because a crossplane inline 4 is the same as a V4. How creative of you Yamaha. Unfortunately it still has the detriment of being twice as a wide as a V4 so it handles worse. Combustion torque vs inertial torque? That means it feels like a V twin. Good job Yamaha, you successfully reinvented the Ducati wheel. Let me know how next year's GP turns out when everyone is on the same tires...

Damn right. Duc boys in WSB are cheaters and nothing else! The rules were 1000cc and max. 4 cylinders. And because of tradition ... lol ... in MotoGP they are using the V4 and not a V2 with 1790cc ;). Yamaha rocks! Just very sad that Haga has left it ... again! And Aprilia kicks some Ducs' backs ;). Go Biaggi, Nakano, Spies and Sykes!
ALL THAT GUYS ARE FROM BOTTOM THE HEART, YAMA GUYS, AND NOW WITH SPIES, WE GO FOR THE ONE TITTLE THAT WE DONT HAVE , ALTHOUGH I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE SPIES AND HAGA LIKE TEAM MATES BUT SORRY cos spies is a S...hit face cos he is a suzie former. and a excellent team on motogp had been NitroNori , Norifumi San and ShinYAMAHA NAKANO (HIS NAME IN JAPAN) A DREAM TEAM ALTHOUGH WE HAVE TO GO TOSELAND (EX CHIKEN WIND) THE TEXAN TORNADO, JORGE LORENSHOW AND THE DOCTOR , ANOTHER DREAM TEAM IN MOTO GP

No, it just seem odd for me that you only have 6 gears, and at 40mph, you are already at 5th gear.
I've been playing around with the gear and had put about 250miles on my brand new bike already.
I just need someone with experience to tell when is the best time to switch the gear so I have a better idea what I am doing.
