Someone said his technique isn't that good. True . . it's actually superb . . on the big throw he really gets his hips into it, mainly because he gets his drive leg further across the circle. It also helps that he's a massive, very fast bloke and that his weight differential to the 12lbs shot is so high. I've seen a lot of his throws with the 16 lbs shot and he never gets his right leg into the same advanced position. Admittedly it's much harder to get the hips through with the big shot.
@gbrad48 No, Gill has a better chance - he threw the 5kg 23.86m (furhter than Crouser) and currently heaves the 7kg shot 20.01m (over 65 feet) at the age of 16, and he's a skinny bugger too.
@bigred200 jacko gill turned 16 in december is 188cm tall and weighs 96kg
has thrown 23.86 with a 5kg before he turned 16 last july won the world juniors 6k with 20.76 and since then has thrown in training over 21m with a 6.25k
i think he is every chance to break this record if he was to throw a 12lb when he is 18 or 19? (however old mike carter was)
michael carters record isnt gonna be beat any time oon by a highschooler, unless they are absolutely freakish, 81'3 is gonna stand for a while, i throw mid 50s and thats difficult and im a big guy, no way anyone beats that for at leat another 10 to 20 years and maybe not even that soon
check out a freshman in high school from new zealand named jacko gill throws 68 with 6 kg (13.2 lbs) will probably beat michael carters record next year
@shotput5 There's a reason why this record has lasted so long. There have been many "prospects" who have been projected to break Carter's record before graduating, and all have failed.
@AdamTheB3ast its gonna be easy b3ast, i'm not gonna quit, if not beating it i'm gonna set my school's record, eat that u b3ast, lol dont take it serious, and ps u could cheer me up bro
Where did you hear that? The second best threw, from what I have researched, is 76 something by Brett Noon. I have never heard of someone else throwing over 77 besides Michael Carter
well in 8th grade i set the ohio state record at 55ft 6in and now im a freshamn and i threw 49ft 11in at the last meet..now i doubt im going to ever throw that far but i think im doing pretty well!
hey before you go calling people names, you need to do some research. Chuck Moye threw 72-8 out of season his senior year of high school. While the OHSAA record is 71-6.25 by Jimmie Pacifico, really Moye still has the "ohio record". Like how Michael Carter's 81-3 is technically not the National High School Federation National Record, his 77' is because he threw this 81-3 out of the NHSF season
ha ha he has amazing glide technique what are you talking about? do you see how nicely his hips come thought way before his upper body...thats the key to throwing far in an event
Im 16 years old and im a sophmore in highschool and i just came in 2st at out districts meet at Dwyer by throwing 47ft 6in. I go to West Boca High School in Florida. That Nick Vena guy doesn't look like a highschool kid at all.
No one is breaking this recored...Mike was on roids when he set this. He admited to it and tested positive. And vena just toped out. Only thing he can improve on is his weight lifting. is form is perfected.
That's not true look up Mason Finley from Buena Vista high school in Colorado he is throwing between like 66 and 70 usually! He is killing it. Dude is like six foot eight and 330. he'll break both disc and shot records for sure!
you there was meet that was after high school and it was like a catch all meet that michael carter went to. i think he threw 83 feet or something but they didn't count it because he graduated from high school the week before but it was still a high school meet. so really the high school should be farther
Mike Carter was the man...hands down one of the best american shotputters ever...especially seein how he cut his career short to play in the NFL....hes probably the best athlete american throwing has seen..
Carter stated in an interview that can be found on macthrowvideo that his lifts in HS were 280 BP and 450 SQ, those though were coupled with probably a 36+ inch vertical and 4.6 speed in the 40 yard dash.
I was on the track team with Mike at TJ. He wouldn't touch 'roids. You can always tell when a guy starts taking them, man. Funny thing about Mike was that his technique in the shot was always considered very poor, we really didn't have a very good coach. It pisses me off to think someone would try to demean his accomplishments with that steroid crap. I didn't Mike had a son involved in track. His daughters hold Texas state records and Michelle is in Beijing. I don't believe you, dude!!!!
I dont even have a single reason to lie about this. At the Baylor track meet, my senior year in high school. I threw against his big ass son. After the meet I asked his dad about the steroid use and he gave me a flat out answer "Yes". Believe what you want to, But I heard it from his mouth
I believe he tested positive for steroids later in his career. He denied it up until his test results therefore he probably did them during high school also.
Michael Carter? Can you post the link where you can prove this. I have never heard that He took steroids. I met him and he is an all around class act.
I went to school with Mike. His BP was alot higher than that and the squats he refers to was what he worked out with. Problem was he was going all the way to the floor and messed up a knee.
haha man dont lie to yourself. I threw the same as you in 8th grade and now im in 10th grade and i throw 47ft 6in. It takes a lot to get that far. Get a private coach as soon as you can, it will only help you. With no coaching my PR was a 44ft 7in but with coaching for around 4 weeks im at 47ft 6in with a couple more feet left in me.
i threw 38 in middle school with the 8 and somehow i just started track 2 weeks ago i started at about 38 with a 12 and im at 41 ft and tht won my indoor conf fairly easy, frosh record being 46 ft at my school im going for
and why cant i gain 40 feet in 4 years? Have you heard of lifting weights? If you really try then yea its possible. But ok when I get up there I am going to show a video of my throwing that.
Unless you get an amazing coach, or roid like crazy, you wont get close to 81 feet. There have been people who worked ridiculously hard and wasn't able to come close.
The only person with a shot at breaking this record right now is Nick Vena. 67'8.25" as a sophomore this past winter.
He threw I believe 65 as a freshman.
41 is an excellent mark for a freshman thrower, however, you are not going to break the national record. Don't let it discourage you though.
You gotta be some kind of athlete, Carter had the size, strength, and explosiveness to play amongst the world's best athlete's in the NFL. Think of how physically superior he must have been in HS
if you see his videos, he is very very lanky! which im not sayin he cant impove on strengh, but it will be extremly dificult for him to actually gain POWER muscle, "fast twitch" he has lean muscle" you can tell from the posture and the way he moves. and you cant gain Fast Twitch muscle, but you can improve your slow twitch, which he has, i mean, he can get stronger, but its not going to really help with explosiveness! look at stephens body type compared to vena! completly different!
the thing with Vena, is that hes like 6'6 so he will not get much stronger just cuz of his body structure, he has the advantage of length on his side! and ok technique!
I think he's only 6'4", and I dont see how that would affect his strength. Jonathan Ogden won the NCAA indoor title in '96, and he's 6'9". I see his height as being an advantage, and no hinderance at all
most people couldn't throw a 2 pound ball that far simply because they could never get their arm to move fast enough. this person must have been so strong that he couldn't even feel the shot
theres a freshman from Morristown, NJ named Nick Vena who threw 66'7", and his bench max is only 225lbs. This kid could break the record by strength training alone
there is a junior named stephen saenz! threw 67 feet at the regional meet in S.A!!! he has hit 69 - 70 in practice! he will take state, but Vena is gonna give him comp, in the nation!
i looked the 16lb. record for a high school athlete. it is over 67 feet by the same person. a fourteen foot drop is understandable at such a high starting distance with the 12lb., but some people get a different conversion than others.
i remember carter getting arrested in college for shooting people with is bb gun from his dorm room window. then he admitted to some things that today would get you a congressional hearing. stop worshiping.
hell no, I don't believe it. If he threw 81 feet with a 12-pound ball in high school, then he would have broken the world record by now with a 16- pound shot
His form wasnt that great at all and he still threw it that far. The guy must have been a beast. if he would have utilized all his speed he might have been able to get a few more feet!!!
Actually my friends father was on Carter's track team and even threw with him. He wasn't that strong. He threw far but prided himself on being quick not strong. My friends father said that Carter didn't spend much time in the weight room at all and he was no where near someone like Jimmie Pacifico of today
just wondering, WHO is your friends father? how does he know for sure how strong Mike was? I had heard the same but he sure does look powerful in these photos...what was he strong at?
He wasn't that strong ?!? He was extremely strong! Strong enough to throw the 16 lb shot 67 feet as a senior in high school, ha ha! That does not come from speed alone. Trust me he would have blown jimmie pacifico out of the water weight wise and power wise. Carter was probably the strongest, fastest high school thrower to ever live and it shows by his 75/76 foot throws. You don't go to the NFL being weak..
hahahaha ur funny. thats where you go wrong. if he was on steroids, I think he would be waaayy bigger than that....and dont you think u he would probably be dead!!!
where in the hell did you get this video??? I have never seen it, WOW !!! that's explosion !!! please let me know if you could email me a copy of this very rare and very important shot put record throw !!!
That is one big ass 18 yo.

Trust me he would have blown jimmie pacifico out of the water weight wise and power wise. Carter was probably the strongest, fastest high school thrower to ever live and it shows by his 75/76 foot throws. You don't go to the NFL being weak..

That is one record that will never go down. The closest to it is 6' behind by a guy that was 'roided out of his mind.
