@deloitetouche@chrdann Actually, no. Most of the technology you see in Science Fiction would either be impossible to make, different than it would appear in Science Fiction, or simply inefficient to make if we had the technology to do so. Also, a common theme of Science Fiction is that society stays the same or changes very little (compared to what is expected), even with the revolutionary advances in almost all fields of science. This is the opposite of what is seen again and again in history.
SF is definately a look to the future, just look at new installment like Galactic Battlefront...I could definately see that being the future...We're not looking for fantasy, that's why it's science fact
The words he is saying makes it sound like ESA came up with the ISS and other of its "partners'---Was the US (NASA) that went to the various members oif EAS for a joint partnership for the ISS and the British, at the time opted out at the time---and still has not joined with other members for the ISS. Hopefully the Brits will eventually will join the teams for ISS ops.
Let's dream of travelling to other worlds because that will depend on experts and the other 99.9% of people aren't miserable enough just being broke and hungry, now they can be left behind or put on slaveships. Kidding.
countries should invest so much more in space travel. Imagine where we'd be today if all the billions of dollars invested in wars and weapons was invested in space technology. it's just ridiculous
@sunno666 you are right..nobody is going to use these uranium contraptions..now wars are done..ww2 was all glory, but people who fight on 21st century are morons..still there must be nationalism., and modern war must be knowladge,..
i dont dislike science fiction i like it...as long as its believable and not too far fetched.......but for anyone to say its too important to dislike......sorry but thats just utter garbage.....SCIENCE itself is too important, not science fiction!
@TR1PACE5 But thats why its called fiction. Its supposed to create unbelievable far-fetched stituations that leave you awstruct. Science fiction was made to propose ideas that seem nearly impossible yet ideas so amazing they make someone want to make them a reality.
If you want to see the future, check the Jetsons. Wall television, robots, satillites, family flyers (Moller Industries). Gene Roddenberry contributed in a huge way to what the future would look like. He spoke to the dreamers and scientists at Motorola, NASA, Arthur C. Clark and others to confirm his ideas of the future.
Interesting piece of documentary. It's certainly true that we have around us today a lot of things that once seemed like science fiction - so we'd better keep imagining more fantastic stuff!

Before Star Trek, in the late 50's, there was a tv program called 'Science Fiction Theater'. I have the series on dvd and was watching them awhile back. I was only seven when I first watched that show. I was sort of young for it, but even then I loved my sci-fi. However, after watching several of the shows recently, I saw that much of the show became the real thing. Awesome. Science fiction is the history book in reverse. (grin)
What a joke, rockets are old technology, and space stations too. Been there done that. Colonising space? not so fast. First we have to survive peak-oil; nothing works like oil, everything works on it. You eat oil.
Not necessarily, it's more about entertainment than anything. Those who don't have the brain mechanisms for thinking analytically (usually those who excel at math) are sucked into sci fi and think of themselves as intellectuals after watching a few clips of star trek and God knows what else. Please approve of this message ESA.
