  • I love Technicolor.

  • That they rehearsed this for just two weeks is astounding, I couldn't to do this in two years.

  • Gene Kelly was never as good as Fred Astaire, but he was better than everyone else in the world. Fred did the same steps as Gene but he did them easier and more relaxed. There will never be another Fred Astaire but we could see a Gene Kelly again.

  • @onebaud1 They were 2 different styles of dancing. Fred was balletic, Gene was athletic. Gene's taps were harder while Fred floated. They both broke new ground in the way dancing was done & photographed in the movies. Fred was the first to barter into his contract the right to artistic control of his dances & insisted the dancers were photographed in full body. (Before that a lot of dances were filmed with the face & feet in 2 seperate shots.)

  • @debro52 Gene came up with the idea of going on location in "On The Town", and it was a huge success. He also included very difficult stunts in his dances. (which he usually did himself...before the studio heads found out about it.) He also negoiated the right to have a say in camera angles, lighting, and other acpects of the photographing of the dancers. He produced, directed & wrote some of his work . Both men contributed greatly to the art of dance in cinema.

  • @onebaud1 In favor of being more objective I would say that they were both equally talented and both had their strengths and weaknesses...both big names today. But in all honesty, Fred does nothing for me when I watch him dance. Yes he is graceful, and all but he is just an old version of what we have today. Gene had this quality about him in his singing, dancing, and acting that just stays with you. Just my own personal opinion though....not knocking you or any other Fred fans.

  • One of life's greatest gifts was allowing these two men to be alive in the same era.

  • i think them dancing together holding hands was sexy and erotic

  • BABBITT: A narrow-minded, self-satisfied person with an unthinking attachment to middle-class values and materialism a BROMIDE:A commonplace remark or notion; a platitude, A tiresome person; a bore. Makes the whole conversation and piece so much more comical.

  • @GhislaineMckenzie

    Thanks for that.

  • I don't know which to watch?!?!?

  • gene and fred were the best!! they both could sing, act, dance, were funny!! i wish there was more talent like that now a days!!

  • 2:00

    Oh and your welcome :)

  • "Are you not Rita Hayworth" "No I'm not.. Ginger!" it's the coolest thing ever!

  • Family Guy brought me here just now.

  • white guy work song.

  • @dmack5586

Lol, good episode with Cleveland, right? I liked when the Simpsons appeared.

  • These two just make me want to learn how to dance sooo bad!!!

  • even their taps were different - Fred was light and delicate and Gene was loud and distinct.

  • can't get any better then these 2 awsome dancers/singers/actors!!! both are amazing!!

  • Omg they are so so amazing!!! THIS IS TRUE TALENT!! Wish we had people with true talent talent nowadays!!

  • It seems like Fred Astaire did all the choreography for this. Lol.

  • I just love watching these old dance scenes, it's so much better than what we have today.

  • i love how the lighter sound of freds taps and the deeper sound of genes taps harmonize so nicely.

  • gene and fred, 2 HUGE talented guys!!!

  • Now that is my kinda heaven!!! :D

  • this is so badass comments with only Likes and only 5dislikes for the clip

  • gene kelly is way better than fred astare....im a Huge gene kelly fan, sorry guys!

  • @Kiwi2354 Sorry but fred started before kelly did, Gene learned the steps from Fred :P hahahaah

  • @VinceTheInstructer50 oh well, i still like Gene's dancing

  • 5:34 of course Fred WOULD be the girl.

  • @digidirigible Well lets be honest, Fred was more graceful then Gene. That's a fact. I have no problem with that.

  • AWSOME! what could be better then gene kelly and fred astaire dancing a duet? NOTHING!!!! pure awsomeness!!

  • Gene is hot with or without any kind of facial hair

  • two hero's of the dance

  • They are PERFECT together.

  • @caljustcal There's no need to become indignant here. I still disagree with your previous statement regardless if your reference is from a teacher who has done her dissertation on this very subject! This very point is corroborated by Kelly himself in his personal interviews. Kelly realized his limitations and elected NOT to be like Astaire but focus on a different American dance form. The two were friends and even collaborated. That's why I stated it was a ridiculous notion & I stand by it!

  • I have watched this so many times!I can't get enough of it!They're brilliant!

  • Well, thats it... itll likely never be done again in our lifetime.

    Enjoy :)

  • that last shot at the end is just priceless

  • @sirArchitect True that; I love the last too!

  • I saw this movie with this part this morning and I counldnt help but be in absolute awe I really adore these two fine gemtlemen, their talent is without say the greatest of all times.

  • I'm not sure...but I think...I think I just had an orgasm

  • I can't believe that no one at MGM saw the potential cash cow in a big, splashy full length feature with these two together!

Maybe they didn't want to work together? I know that Gene Kelly had a reputation for being a really hard core perfectionist and Astaire really didn't want to put up with 97 takes?

  • @archer1949 Fred Astaire was also a notorious perfectionist and extremely detail-oriented. Maybe that would have made it difficult? Still, I can't believe this is the only time they danced together...seems like such a waste of two colossal talents.

  • I'm baffeled that this is the ONLY time they danced together! I mean come one....Gene Kelly did like 3 movies with Frank Sinatra whom we all know can't dance (but is a wonderful singer) and only did this short piece with Fred?? MGM you made a mistake in not partnering these two men together

  • @elliestar88 I agree completely.... WASTE OF TALENT

  • @marus815 Although I agree, I also read that there was in fact a reason...They were best friends and such, it was not bad blood so to speak..But sadly Mr. Astaire died before they could do any more...I love them both, but you have to realize..Fred Astaire was a few years older then Gene Kelly.

  • @CromwellxChapters fourteen years older to be exact!

  • Comment removed

  • *mouth drops open* U believe Fred Astaire can't DANCE??? :/ I mean, of course, you're entitled to your good opinion, heheh, but I always thought he was amazing. :D

  • @mickmeggie no i was saying that Frank Sinatra can't dance lol I love Fred I KNOW he can dance....he's one of my dance idols

  • @elliestar88 They did dance together one more time in a documentary motion picture called 'Thats Entertainment Part 2' which they presented together in 1976, more than 30 years later.

  • @cdmartinus oh yea i forgot about that, but I think they should have actually co-stared in a film together not just random dances in clips of a movies. makes me sad

  • @elliestar88 Gene and Fred danced together twice in their careers, once in 1945 in the movie Ziegfeld Follies and then again in the 1976 movie That’s Entertainment II. For the dance sequence in Ziegfeld Follies, the director chose a Gershwin number titled The Babbit and the Bromide, to display their talents.

  • @elliestar88

You forget that MGM was running a business and they got the most bang for their buck by casting Kelly and Astaire in different movies. No decision in Hollywood has ever been made based on anything but profit.

  • @elliestar88 Well they did dance once more together. That was in the film That's Entertainment II in 1976. But I do wish they had danced together more times during their prime.

  • @elliestar88 Gene taught Frank Sinatra to dance when they were making "Anchors Aweigh". I would love to see a movie with both of these song & dance men in it, but they never made one. The studio could make plenty of money having them in seperate movies, but I don't know why they didn't let the guys make one together. Our Loss.

  • @elliestar88 well technically they did work together again in That's Entertainment II but does that really count?

  • Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire have been such an inspiration to me since I started dancing. By far the most amazing dancers that ever graced their presence on this earth.

So many kids my age would see this and say "that's so gay" or something extremely ignorant along those lines. It's hard to find people who can appreciate the amazing work that people like Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, or anyone with that caliber of talent did. Especially around my age, 18 year olds have no idea what real talent is.

  • This is like Django Reinhardt and Bireli Lagrene getting together.

  • Comment removed

  • simply magical!!!!!!

  • that last moment when they both smile at the camera at the end, that for me symbolizes the two best dancers the world has ever seen.

  • I would give anything to dance with gene just once!!! <3

  • i want to dance with them two even though im rubbish but you know....

  • nie do wiary!

  • How can someone not like this??

  • lol:

"sorry i can't place you, what kind of business are you in"

    "oh well, i-i dance!"

"at home for the folks? picnics? that kind of thing?"

    lol :)

  • Last night i had a dream that I and my best friend performed this dance perfectly and put on fake moustaches as we turned round and when we got an applaud and Cowell etc said YES, we denied them just to spite the crap taste in talent in todays television and of course Simon the devil Cowell. True story! What a pair of legends btw..

  • @dcs93 Sounds like an awesome dream!!!

  • Astaire: You're not Rita Hayworth!

    Kelly: No I'm not, Ginger!

  • It is such a gift having had these two people in the world. They can never be praised enough.

I know Fred Astaire never set out to make art, but never the less that's what happened. Prue art!

  • I want to thumb this up countless times!

  • Espectaculares los dos.

  • After this...tears of joy!!

  • This is too short./ minutes are just not long enough.I can watch this one number for hours.I love them so much!

  • LOLL

  • Perfeitos!!! como gosto de assistir estes dois. \o/

  • this made me lol several times

  • Wow brilliant.I just really admire Fred Astaire,he was both a great dancer and singer and very modest about it,which makes it even better!

  • This is unbelievable.. I would love to have been one of these two doin this dance..

  • Really nice. That Astair, who is 50+ can still do the jazz steps is wonderful.

  • "olive oil" :)

  • @jayesdaouisi LOL

  • "you're not Rita Hayworth!"

    "no I'm not... Ginger"

  • bravo

  • Gene Kelly is so insanely handsome!!!

  • Un

    Bee

    Leev

    Able

    !!!!

  • things like this really make me think It's good to be alive : ) <3

  • Two guys, no matter how talented, couldn't do this today without being called "fag"

  • <3

  • I love... Love... Love... Forever !!!!

  • These two legends together...!!! It is fabulous! No wonder Michael J. looked up to Fred Astaire.(was his idol along with James Brown). And Fred called Michael up after his Motown 25 TV debut as a solo artist...to congratulate him! After which he and Gene went over to visit MJ...!!! The tradition continued...

  • @ddchil41 now that would've been awesome man. To be in that room with those three. Kelly, Astaire and Jackson. all that talent in one room would give me chills.

  • definitivamente los mejores pues "los papas de los helados" despues de ellos lo demas se veran principiantes siempre...repito definitivamente LOS PAPAS DE LOS HELADOS

  • let's adlib a little somthin together then, whip it up right here on the spot

like the routine we've been practicin for weeks

    aaaaahhhhh :D

    Man I love these guys

  • I miss these days, when people actually had to have talent to be famous. Two of my favourite people that've ever lived, here.

  • nice to see the entire clip..only have see a shorter version form "thats entertainment"

  • Both Gene Kelly and Bob Fosse looked up to Fred Astaire as their idol. Fred on the other hand, praised both men for their talents. Fred originated many of the dance styles and steps that both Gene and Fosse used throughout their careers. Both Gene and Bob would add their own genius to the art of dance. All three of these men were superb dancers and choreographers. You have seen Fosse dance, right? He was great, but of course, Gene and Fred were the best.. Both were equally great.

  • @mdshullaw52 I really admire Fred Astaire BUT he did not originate this tap style but did show case his smooth style on the film dance genre. Kelly always said that he could NEVER be like Astaire by dancing in top hat /tails. Kelly was more athletic, wanted to incorporate modern dance & ballet as style. Ballroom dancing was not his thing! The Nicholas Bros, Bojangles Robinson were top acts too! In fact, Astaire conceded that the Nicholas Bros "Stormy Weather" dance was the best he had seen!

  • When I die, I want to go out peacefully, sitting in front of a giant screen playing this video (Soylent Green style).

  • Why does Gene Kelly say "olive oil"?? It has always puzzled me.

  • the two greatest dancers in film history...true story

  • Two of Michael Jackson's inspirations and idols! Thanks for sharing!

  • Dueling Tap-Shoes

  • just so tired of today's tv shows and persona's. it is a breath of fresh air to see that there still are people out there who appreciate real talent. even if they are only a hand full, and generally from other countries. one girl i know actually said once: who is your idol? i said Frank Sinatra. her answer was: is he a hip hop singer?

  • @RiddlerG3

    OMG!!She asked that!?

If it had been me I dont how I would have readted. How can some poeple dont know Frank Sinatra!?

  • @marus815 some people just don't for them eminem and 50 cent are the 2 greatest talents that ever walked the Earth

  • @marus815 I know how I would have reacted. *SLAP*

  • @RiddlerG3 me too:)!!! Im a teen and I eel like I'm the only one who LOVES these kind of things in my ENTIRE school... :( ;)))))) ahh well. At least I'll die knowing I got to enjoy something special.

  • @RiddlerG3; Surely you jest...

    o.o;

    Atleast... I hope.

  • @RiddlerG3 Haha LMAO! Cant believe someone from my generation would answer like that! I love being 18 and interested in the old sutff that has TALENT written all over it! :)

  • @RiddlerG3 That'a what I love about You Tube. You find out, there is a lot of people out there who go for the same things than you, and you can share things like this with people who will really appreciate them.

  • omg, i wanna bring this back! maybe with animation or something...

  • It's so funny how the statue in the backround is changing too!

  • Man they're amazing ! My heart belongs to Gene but I admire Astaire a lot of course (how could it be otherwise ?) and watching them both, dancing together, is a wonder.

  • i love it

  • Where can you buy this film

  • Just lovely.

  • I love this clip! :) Two great dabcers! What film was this from? I would really love to see the rest :)

  • Really good! I started tap dancing classes and I appreciate that kind of talent even more. Do you know those tap shoes are very slipery on a wooden floor?

Those two are my all time favorite! Thanks for this movie :-)

  • I may be an atheist but the idea that those two guys might be dancing in heaven pleases me greatly.

  • Hello! How are you? Hows the folks? Whats new? I'm great! Thats good! Ha Ha!! knock wood! well, well! thats life! What do ya know! Hows the wife? Gotta run/fly! oh my! Ta Ta, olive oil, goodbye!!

  • Screw Lady Gaga, Timberlake and Simon Cowell: THIS IS REAL TALENT!!

  • @CharlieCollyer Amen!

  • gene kellys little wave at 6:14 makes me smile so much!

  • Ahh, old-school goodness... Back in those days, musicals had higher quality than childish songs with catastrophical acting and really, really bad singing. It's just amazing what mutated radioactive crap suitable for 6-year-olds people are able to buy from Disney... They just don't make 'em like that anymore.

  • Incredible dancing. Two of the greatest.

  • They just don't make movies like this anymore. It's sad really. Nowadays people call this gay and stupid. Those people are missing out. I thank my mom everyday for having me watch all these old musicals. I'd rather watch an old time Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire movie than watch a movie that the biggest thing about it is that some actress is naked having sex.

  • Fantasticos...Geniales...como me hacian disfrutar y me hacen ...disfrutar cada vez que les veo ..Gozar con la Musica...Geniales, esto eran Musicales.

  • @cibergenios

Me alegra que lo hayas disfrutado!!!

  • Can you upload the Judy Garland number? :D I'd be very glad!

  • @PilarCanto

Unfortunately, this is the only number form the film I got.

    Sorry!!!

  • this makes me feel REEALLLYY GOOD. =)

  • There's a version of this done with Fred and his sister Adele. I think it is around 1926, somewhere in that time frame, it was recorded, but there was no video or move of it.

  • @tmax45R

where can you find that? I'd love to see them together ^.^

  • I LOVE this movie.

Gene Kelly totally makes me melt.

    And these two *together?*

Dont even get me startedddd.... <3

  • Is this the only time Astaire and Kelly dance and act together?

  • @dominikhimself I think so, but I'm pretty sure they've been doing things together in like talk shows maybe

  • @dominikhimself

    Sadly,yes

  • @marus815 They did a little in one of the "That's Entertainment!" movies.

  • @dominikhimself Astaire took over a leadrole from Kelly when Kelly broke his ankle ,got Astaire back out of retirement. It,s easter parade. Kelly could only watch then .

  • @dominikhimself

they danced one more time, together, in 1976 in "That's Entertainment II" they were older, but it's great to see anyway !! :D

  • @dominikhimself They did get together and dance/act in That's Entertainment II. Not quite in the zeal of this number, but it was still fun to see! :)

  • @dominikhimself

In That`s Entertainment 2 they narrarate and do a couple of numbers together.

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing!

Every time they bumped into each other, I was sure all that colliding talent would cause some kind of explosion!

  • I love this number. Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire singing and dancing together. It doesn't get any better than that. Fred and Gene were life-long friends.

  • I cannot believe someone told me this was gay! FAR FROM! If onlythey understood talent not crap!

  • I'M SURE THE FOLKS THAT HIT DISLIKE HIT IT BY A MISTAKE WHILE TRYING TO HIT LIKE !! ITS THAT OR THEY'RE GAY !! HAHAH GREAT VIDEO I LOVE IT

  • MAN I WATCH THIS TWICE A DAY...PURE GENIUS THANK YOU MAN !!

  • ...and then the soundstage explode from sheer talent overload.

It's a shame we don't have anyone quite like these two around anymore- the artistic athlete and the athletic artist.

  • I don't think such awesome men as these two could ever be enemies. I see them more as drinking buddies laughing over mishaps, and lamenting broken tap shoes. Their friendship certainly shines through in this clip. I think this was they only one they ever did together

  • marius?

  • I love Gene Kelly. He's so charming and just an amazingggg dancer. No one like him.

  • Excuse me, I'm bad in English. But I need to know what words they're singing?

And what words they're talking to each other In the beginning??

    Please,answer me!!!

  • On the "American Masters" special about Gene Kelly, they note the differences as Kelly was lower to the ground while Astaire would love gliding about. A great line: "You gave your heart to Fred Astaire but you saved your body for Gene Kelly" as Kelly would really work hard with others while Astaire was more on his own. Still, a unique mix to put together.

  • When I first started the clip I was worried that Fred would show his age next to Gene. NOT AT ALL! Thanks for the post.

  • great post- but how can you fully post a copyrighted video with the full knowledge that you are breaking copyright law while simultaneously commenting that you do not have the "intention" of breaking copyright laws? it would be more logical and effective, given that you were caught, to say that you didn't know about copyright, rather than to say before hand that you don't intend to break laws that you are fully concious that you do. not that i give a fig about copyright though....

  • @Vanzetti1936 Gotta love non-creative non-artistic garbage-head geeks who sink themselves in an abyss of legal-babble, who would rather the art of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire die, and also deprive the youth of America of the experience of a Gene Kelly dance routine, thus killing the craft, than stoop to bending a few rules. Go back to your computer, egg-head!!!

  • Is Gene saying olive oil? lol

  • I feel so fat, lazy, and slow =(

    These guys are gods.

  • I feel a new obsession coming :)

  • @Mark0wnsYou

Actually, this video is the reason I began watching musicals...

  • @marus815 me too actually lol

  • @Mark0wnsYou HAHA I'm so there!
