When the 9th was first performed in Vienna in 1824, some critics panned it, one actually saying that the Ode to Joy sounded "like a train going through a tunnel". Fat lot he knew. That "train" has almost gone through two centuries!
@MegaClassiclover The Nordbahn, Austria's first steam railway company, was built between Floridsdorf and Deutsch Wagram in 1837. However, the first public railway in England opened in 1802. Other countries had them in the early 19th century as well. The critic I spoke of didn't say that the Ode to Joy sounded like an AUSTRIAN train. You think no foreigners were in Vienna in 1824, or that many Austrians didn't travel or know what a train was or sounded like?
This is the perfect storm of videos. The famous music and vocals chosen by Beethoven for the finale of his 9th symphony. Ultimate production, converting a square in Tuscany, into a concert hall. Astoundingly good singers. The only minus is a plus ...those 2 girls can produce such an epic vocal performance while looking like they are snoozing through it. Like somebody running a 4 minute mile without breaking a sweat and with a calm expression on their face.
@FL0D0S The purpose of the conductor is to unify the performers, set the tempo, excecute clear preparations and beats, and listen for any mistakes by the orchestra through visible gestures. Really you don't have to be an expert on classical and baroque music to know the role of the conductor.
The Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, is the final complete symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven. Completed in 1824, the symphony is one of the best known works of the Western classical repertoire,[1] and has been adapted for use as the European Anthem. It is considered by critics to be one of Beethoven's masterpieces[2][3] and one of the greatest musical compositions ever written
Not the best but a great performance, i am from austria and you all who like this should come some time in your life to Salzburg or Vienna to listen to it live. You wont regret it, i promise.
Even though I may not understand the words sung - it certainly makes more sense WAY MORE SENSE and WAY MORE ENJOYABLE than all the apeshit garbage rap and bland rock music of today!

I dunno, sometimes I think that people get satisfied too easily. They keep saying that the point is about 'feeling the moment' or enjoying the simplicity. Most of the times these are the same people who'd love just about anything they heard. I think Beethoven is neither about the moment nor simple.

Dear blueyedboy84 - you ever play an instrument or write an arrangement or understand making a living in music? It doesn't matter how "exacting" the score is. The acoustics change a lot depending on the location, the instruments used, where outdoors, in a sound studio, etc., etc., etc. And professionals playing this music don't need a conductor - just someone to start and end. Unless you consider the complete hams on the podium more important than the musicians.
I have invited blueyedboy to show us his musical skills here before as he seems to be so well informed and knowledgeable but he has never obliged!! xx
@oracle2world I studied at Royal College London and am professional.I am not saying that to be 'snobby'-only to answer your question.
You are wrong. A conductor IS required because someone needs to assert an 'interpretation' on the score. At basic level this means the tempo, phrasing etc. That is why if you hear 5 recordings of Beethoven 5 they all sound different! I think it is insulting to call conductors I named eg.Abbado 'hams'. If you saw an orchestral rehearsal you would understand.
@blueyedboy84 - saw a rehearsal? I've PLAYED in rehearsals, complete with tantrums and screaming from the conductor. Anyway, you are correct about the phrasing and tempo, and sorry if I disparaged the great conductors. They do quite a bit more than wave their arms.
However ... Rieu isn't a philharmonic orchestra, and his audience are not classical music afficiandos. Soooooooooo cut him some slack for "artistic license". Like a lot of it.
Freude, schoner Gotterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heiligtum. Deine Zauber binden wieder, Was die Mode streng geteilt, Alle Menschen werden Bruder, Wo dein sanfter Flugel weilt. Seid umschlungen, Millionen! Diesen KuB der ganzen Welt! Bruder - uberm Sternenzelt MuB ein lieber Vater wohnen.
@violiniztapianizta, at bottom of this page click "Next" then Ctrl+F "Ode to Joy lyrics", I recalled there all you need on these lyrics (German, English, writing, sources), which are just as electrifying as the music itself.
@ladyinred1100 The comments below regarding Rieu's 'conducting 'might be half-joking but in a way they are correct because they all realised Rieu is not a conductor at all in the sense Abbado,Solti,Chailly are. Bernstein, like all those conductors is on a different planet of musicality and integrity to Rieu.
Well his orchestra The JSO understand his every move so that is all that matters. They all work together in harmony to provide joy and entertainment to those who want to enjoy and not take things too seriously xx
@ladyinred1100, agree: André Rieu's model is Johann Strauss, whose musical genius and work would not have been enough to make and transport down to us all, 2 centuries later, his wonderful waltzes, if he hadn't been also an excellent businessman. If AR hadn't made the appropriate balance between musical and business works, his MUSIC wouldn't have moved millions hearts as it did.
I think JSII (and LVB) would understand AR and love him.
@Merlin1940 except that Mozart, Bach and Schubert were all commercial failures and yet, due to the greatness of their art alone, their music is amongst the most influencial and admired of all time.
Times are changing and so is music pieces like this and other music has always been adapted and changed over the years and will continue that way for as long as music is around so get used to it good job andre'.
Please correct me if I am wrong which I am sure someone will but didn't the title to this say 'best orchestra' up until a couple of days ago What happened to those words xx
@fransjeclevers How dare your criticize Herr Beethoven like that! Some of his best works emerged from his deafness - The Ninth, Eighth, Seventh, Sixth, Fifth, and Fourth were composes while he battled his degrading hearing loss, in addition to the "Sonata fur das Hammerklavier," the "Diabelli Variations," his opera, "Fidelo" was written while he battled hearing loss."Fur Elise," "Moonlight Sonata," "The Battle Vittoria," "Christ on the Mount of Olives," all written while he was going deaf!
I thought the stoic deadpan look was irony. Made me smile.

Like a lot of it.

take care: Muß and Kuß NOT: MuB and KuB.
If you don't have the ß you can replace it by ss.
so: Muss and Kuss

@LennardMuc Thanks.... Do you know the correct pronunciation of these??
violiniztapianizta 1 year ago
@violiniztapianizta, at bottom of this page click "Next" then Ctrl+F "Ode to Joy lyrics", I recalled there all you need on these lyrics (German, English, writing, sources), which are just as electrifying as the music itself.

Its called 'conducting' dear people. Have you not seen Leonard Bernstein 'conducting' this wonderful piece Joy Joy Joy xx
ladyinred1100 1 year ago
@ladyinred1100 The comments below regarding Rieu's 'conducting 'might be half-joking but in a way they are correct because they all realised Rieu is not a conductor at all in the sense Abbado,Solti,Chailly are. Bernstein, like all those conductors is on a different planet of musicality and integrity to Rieu.

@blueyedboy84
Well his orchestra The JSO understand his every move so that is all that matters. They all work together in harmony to provide joy and entertainment to those who want to enjoy and not take things too seriously xx
ladyinred1100 1 year ago
@ladyinred1100, agree: André Rieu's model is Johann Strauss, whose musical genius and work would not have been enough to make and transport down to us all, 2 centuries later, his wonderful waltzes, if he hadn't been also an excellent businessman. If AR hadn't made the appropriate balance between musical and business works, his MUSIC wouldn't have moved millions hearts as it did.
I think JSII (and LVB) would understand AR and love him.

@Merlin1940 nice approach... but, no! I don't think so.

@Merlin1940 except that Mozart, Bach and Schubert were all commercial failures and yet, due to the greatness of their art alone, their music is amongst the most influencial and admired of all time.

why orchestra manager is always looking like gay or pedophile
gladimdim 1 year ago
@gladimdim
What a rediculous comment. If you have to call Andre Rieu 'orchestra manager' you obviously know nothing about him. I suggest you find out
ladyinred1100 1 year ago
@ladyinred1100 agreed, the term "moron" is far more suitable.

fransjeclevers 1 year ago 2
@fransjeclevers How dare your criticize Herr Beethoven like that! Some of his best works emerged from his deafness - The Ninth, Eighth, Seventh, Sixth, Fifth, and Fourth were composes while he battled his degrading hearing loss, in addition to the "Sonata fur das Hammerklavier," the "Diabelli Variations," his opera, "Fidelo" was written while he battled hearing loss."Fur Elise," "Moonlight Sonata," "The Battle Vittoria," "Christ on the Mount of Olives," all written while he was going deaf!

@fransjeclevers Seems to me that Van Beethoven heard more than most people.
