@Andraste77 < Faith doesn't require evidence just like you know your parents love you and they know you do also. Science need evidence and you only find for simple systems. Human mind/body/spirit connection is beyond today's science. One day, we'll know more.
I do not believe God force(holy spirit) cares to punish or rewards us; it just exist for us to tune into IT for inspiration and guidance. Try tuning into it with some faith, it'll make you a better scientists and human being.

@Andraste77< Children are atheist in process of becoming spiritual. Spiritual is not a vague term; it means someone who is enlightened and know him-herself. Empathy is natural unless repressed by bad childhood.
You perhaps have good morals as an atheist but under extreme stress, you'll break faster than someone who is spiritual. I can't prove it to you right now but check out martial artists and successful athletes, they're spiritual, meaning they are focused and know their inner core.

@Andraste77 < Most religious wars were political war; the most beautiful thing I observed about power of religion was in Philippines during removal President Marcos in the 80s and church organized rally giving soldiers flowers to turn them against Marcos which led to democracy. Other incident comes to mind is Pope Leo I (b. 430) saved Italy from running over by Attila the Hun.
Everything under the Sun has a purpose as long as it doesn't impose dictatorship on people's minds.

@Zeno1999 - Are we now just listing things religion is responsible for and putting them in "good" and "bad" columns?
Good and bad things are done every day, for all kinds of reasons - I would just like the reasons I do things to have a basis in reality - with evidence and reason, and with the least harm to myself, others, and the world at large. Good things can be done without 'divine permission' and for their own sake. For a reasonably moral person to do really BAD things takes religion.
