Wow now that I look at what I said that was actually quite rude of me and for that I apologize but I am trying to find a good recording of this piece on youtube and when I heard this I was so shocked I didn't know what else to say.
Wow...its not gospel. Its a spiritual. And i agree with ajeanee16, the fingers and head shakes and whatnot were completely unnecessary. A racist, FLAT, extremely slow, imitation of this song.
I dunno about racist...there ARE some white choirs who have rendered this song beautifully...This is definitely NOT one of them!
And the movements, some choirs can pull them off, while others can't. I guess these guys were trying that to make up for the lack of emotion they were putting forth. But I could not feel ANY emotion at all.
This is probably one of THE worst renditions of this song I've ever heard...
Wow..this is really, really terrible. This isn't a song to parody and make fun of. Moses Hogan was one of the best arrangers of all time, not just of gospel music. Come on...pick something with less musical value than this to poke fun at.
im sorry about the negativ comment. i was just playing around with the audio preview and pressed post comment by accident. i usually dont leave negative comments sorry!!
I'm not too sure of what to think of this... because jazz hands, and it lacked a sort of well... it was just too white, and then the jazz hands come along and put the icing on this vanilla cake.
oh no, they "jazz handsed" - spirit fingers? whatever. Moses Hogan- are you firggin kidding me? This song isnt a joke. Moses Hogan is not a joke. Very disappointed.
...eh it wasn't great. but the guys were cute....they made this song "white", and that's not cool. the togetherness, the rhythm, the pitch.....it just wasn't there.....
OH i love this song. U guys felt that spirt. The tenors r the best part. The 2 guys who sing the tenors i know that its hard to bump up to those high nots but dont let it fall flat. But other then that i thought u guys ROCK!
the small tenor group are flat on comes the other tenors are TOO LOUD. some other sections are loud that you cant hear the other parts. it needs ALOT of work. i would be embaressed to display this. the poeple are clapping in the audience becuase they dont know this.
as my choir director would say...yall better put some uhhhmmmpp into dat song....grab that crowd and let them feel that "O' MY JESUS'"....and darken those tones...
Okay, first of all, right off the bat, everyone was an entire halfstep flat. This was also WAY too slow. And what was with all those adlibs?! Sopranos singing the tenor parts an octave higher?! And the descant sopranos, what was with the hand motions?
the black people in that gruop aren't offended? hell, I'm Colombian and I know how this song is supposed to sound.... the leads are way to.... sweet. if you can find a recording of the moses hogan choir doing it... it's amazing.. and you'll probably learn a thing of to.
ON a different note you guys sound far too angelic when singing this song. As my choir conductor Susan Quinn would delicately put it "Sound black not white". Darken your sound a little bit more and keep everyone in the same key. You're really floundering in some parts of the song and you're not singing together. A choir isn't a number of people singing the song the way they want.
You guys really could have done better. I was in a concert choir for years and we did this song much better (no offense). I don't think you guys sound very unified, and while the tenors sound okay I'm a little disappointed. Try getting a tenor and soprano to step forward and sing together instead of just males.
This is sooooo awful!!!!!!!! I love that the audience laughed. If it had been done well, that would have never happened. Is the soloist and the choir even in the same key!?!
I think we've been unduly hard on you guys... I'm just realizing that this is the University of Cape Town. This means you were singing an American, "African American-spiritual" nonetheless, so you'd have limited knowledge of how to go about that:o). In light of such, great job!
That's an interesting way of looking at it, but yeah, we're South African... I think this was one of the first "African American spirituals" we performed. If we do one again, I'll take note of what the critics have said.
Creatix1986, Only an idiot would not be able to follow a tempo marking. When Moses Hogan writes an arrangement of a quick African American spiritual, you will see that he uses various compositional devices, among them is using the men's voices as a rhythmic factor. In this tempo the song does not make any sense, and a quicker way to figure out how the song should be performed all you need to do is find one of the various recording of Moses Hogan conducting the Moses Hogan chorale.
Terrible!!!! Moses Hogsn would be turning in his grave!! i know of a high school choir that can show you up in that same arangement!!!Moses hogan is an african-american negro spiritual composer and arranger, not a jazz-hands type writer!! You should have done a piece from Chicago!! That sucked big time!! oh and BTw, if you didn't want the comments, you shouldn't have put it up for the nat'l audiene to see!!!
However i used to make the beats on 1 and 3 with a bit more bass at the 1 in our version of the song,it gives the whole thing an extra of power i think. I hope to upload a record of the arr we sing from a concert in valencia (spain) we'll have this april. nice job overall and the audience obvisually liked it aswell..
our choir sings it in the same arr. with vocal percussion aswell. nicely done imo.
To those other people, the arr. is ment to be that way, if you think thers a one and only right version of this song, get the hell off youtube. were not seeking here to find what we already knew.
This was terrible! First of all, it is called a Negro Spiritual and not Gospel! Second, this was not even close the original. If Moses Hogan heard this, he would die!
That was the worse version of that song i have ever heard, please do us all a favor and stop. dear lord do you know what a chord is? jazz hards are you kidding me, get a new director
this is exremely slow

I've sung this song and it is very difficult! I think they did a pretty decent job under the circumstances (the large hall creates issues in itself)!

No, I can't feel the spirit moving. This version is just insulting. The only "spirit" I saw was in the "Spirit Fingers". This was just embarrassing.

No offense to your choir director but they directed this incorrectly. Are they not familiar with Moses Hogan?

Not very good. The problem is the whole song. Not like Mr. Hogan intended.

This is slower than the way I've heard and sang it before. And as a tenor, I'm dissappointed in the fact the tenors are considerably flat.

It is a spiritual. COMPLETELY different! Im glad you said that.. I kept yelling at my computer... lol

I did this song last year and I have to say this is probably my least favorite version. VIDALVAUGHN was right about the jazz hands. Poor Moses.

It wasn't just the jazz hands that bothered me. Their singing was too slow and lethargic. They lacked spirit and energy. Atrocious.

Good job.
But the two tenor soloists need to feel/get into the song more.
I did that part when we did this song at my school and well the four of us singing it were definately feeling it.
Oh and the jazz hands didn't fit for this song.
Other then those two issues... I liked it!
