Some religions believe that the statues are gods, but as Catholics, we believe in only one God, and that just as a the first Christians painted pictures of Jesus, Paul, Peter and Mary, we too follow in their footsteps.

Exodus 20 is a command against idol worship, not a command against symbols of salvation.
Consider the serpent that Moses made. When the people looked at it, they were saved from their issue. When the people, due to the influence of the surrounding people groups and their old Egyptian days, began to hold the symbol higher than its purpose, it was destroyed.
Consider the Ark of the Covenant. It handcrafted beauty was a symbol.

Hail Jesus! yes the whole sleep vs. in heaven thing is confusing. Yes Jesus did say that on the Cross. He also talked of two people that were dead and said they were sleeping. Maybe the people who died before Christ will sleep. They would have to. Were else would they go. They have yet to be Judged. Everyone on the planet would not go to heaven. Jb, What did He mean in John 20:17? As one can see from the NASB translation, which in this case if much more accurate than the KJV, the word means literally, "to cling to, hold on to." What Mary wanted to do was to "cling" to Jesus, to "hold" on to Him (in fact the tense of the verb indicates that was exactly what she was in fact doing).
Jesus is telling her in effect, "You cannot cling to me because I am going back to the Father." In other words, "You can't hold on to me, trying to keep me here, because my work is not yet finished, and I must ascend to the Father to complete my work." Jb, do your bible study to fully understand what you are reading in the bible, it really helps.

Atheism is a very valid belief system, otherwise I would never have subscribed to it in my youth. But Theism and Atheism cannot coexist, because one of these is False.

The arch angel Gabriel said "Hail Mary full of grace the lord is with thee" then her cousin Elizabeth said "blessed art thou amoungst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb" The entire rosary is the life, death and reserection of Jesus.

Turning Mary and Jesus into jewlery items are idols. no person alive know what they looked like, this type of thing makes our faith no different than buddah, or the hindu god, to the non believer. plus God gets Jealous! look at what happen to that Jesus statue! we have to pray with our hearts not our eyes.

@jamjr1972, the bible shows us that even God asked us to make images as it says in the old Testament. These things are only reminders of who they represent. Some religions believe that the statues are gods, but as Catholics, we believe in only one God, and that just as a the first Christians painted pictures of Jesus, Paul, Peter and Mary, we too follow in their footsteps.

You can pray to the Saints. Catholics don't think that Mary is a God, but we do pray to her because she is like our mother. She prays for us. She is also under God. I know that Evangelical Christians think that Catholics worship Mary as a God but we don't.

@jamjr1972 Please read the Catholic Catechism. It can be found on line (do a Google search). Look up "Adoration Catholic Catechism" and look up "Mary's Role Catholic Catechism" on Google. You'll see the difference between the worship we Catholics give that is due to God alone and the honor we give to the Saints.
Don't judge Catholic devotion by followers, many of whom are simply ignorant through no fault of their own. Judge it by the Catechism ("rule book" of Catholicism) and by our Tradition.

Exodus 20 is a command against idol worship, not a command against symbols of salvation.
Consider the serpent that Moses made. When the people looked at it, they were saved from their issue. When the people, due to the influence of the surrounding people groups and their old Egyptian days, began to hold the symbol higher than its purpose, it was destroyed.
Consider the Ark of the Covenant. It handcrafted beauty was a symbol.
God commanded these. Is he a hypocrite?

Hail Jesus! yes the whole sleep vs. in heaven thing is confusing. Yes Jesus did say that on the Cross. He also talked of two people that were dead and said they were sleeping. Maybe the people who died before Christ will sleep. They would have to. Were else would they go. They have yet to be Judged. Everyone on the planet would not go to heaven. They must be sleeping waiting to be Judge. They must awake after the 1000 years when the book of life is opened?

Jb, What did He mean in John 20:17? As one can see from the NASB translation, which in this case if much more accurate than the KJV, the word means literally, "to cling to, hold on to." What Mary wanted to do was to "cling" to Jesus, to "hold" on to Him (in fact the tense of the verb indicates that was exactly what she was in fact doing).

Jesus is telling her in effect, "You cannot cling to me because I am going back to the Father." In other words, "You can't hold on to me, trying to keep me here, because my work is not yet finished, and I must ascend to the Father to complete my work." Mother Mary invited Christ into her life, as she invites us to do the same. Having Christ dwell in us, as Christ does in Mother Mary. It seems you would like your way to be the right way and you debate your stand, to justify the teaching you want to be true because its the one you feel comfortable with but that doesnt make it True. Jesus as a baby was not the messiah, he was BORN to become the messiah but he could not be the messiah until after he died and rose from the grave. JESUS went up to heaven alive 40 days after he rose from the grave. He is still alive and HE does not need anyone else to step in for him. He is more than capable for doing the job himself. Forst, the dead are not yet in heaven but the bible proves the dead are "asleep" waiting for the rapture. See the bible at Romans 6:4 " Therefore, through baptism we were buried with him into his death so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the Father's glory, we too may live an entirely new life." Look at headstones with the words "sleeping in Christ" or "asleep in Jesus"

The bible is very clear. when you pray to God, the only way to the Father in Heaven is through the son. Jesus is alive and Mary is dead. Jesus is here as the third face of God. Mary is not to replace God. Praying to anyone other than Jesus shows disrepect for Jesus, like He no longer is able or exists. That is the falsehood of any church that teaches someone else can hear you prayers. there are only 3 faces in the God head and Mary is not one of them. The bible says that God is a jealous God.

She is dead and the bible does not ever mention that she went up to heaven alive as did Jesus. God is the God of the living not of the dead. So are you saying God's Mother is dead? Why would God dishonour his own mother? That's rather rude of Jesus

Jesus was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day, He arose again and ascended into Heaven and sitteth at the right hand of the Father from whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead, and His Kingdom will have no end.
The BODY dies-the SOUL lives on if not condemned hell. Mary (body & soul) was assumed into Heaven & was crowned Queen of Heaven-Queen of the Angels. Youd don't crown the dead.
We will go to LIVE with the Father in His house one day.

We do not worship idols, statues help us to visualize. They are not idols. We worship God in three persons. We pray to Mary because she is the mother of Christ Jesus and as such is deserving of prayer and praise and is a strong intercessor for us. Our Lady of the Rosary pray for us.
