I say, C'mon winning lottery ticket! :) I had a ' 94 Geo Metro, but it started having mechanical problems & was getting high mileage on the motor, so i had to part with it. :( That Geo got around 35 mpg, but i hear the Smart Car gets 5 to 7 or 8 more miles to the gallon. Well, look how small it is, no wonder. lol
@matt59fire well yeah, but when you pay 14000 € for a car,you would expect to protect you!!A lot of people drive motorcycles cause they can't afford buying a car!!!But if someone has that amount of money, why should he buy this particular car????
smart cars get very bad gas mileage for there small front profile.bring back the disel rabbit or the honda CRX, 50 mpg cars of the past , with actual interior space
That car is a deathtrap...One of my friends has this, and believe me,every time I have to get in I feel so unsafe!!!There is nothing to protect you, except a little airbag..And that's all!!!!!Too much money for such a dangerous car!
Just remember this lovely little runabout has been available here in Europe for nearly 12 yrs and in the USA for just over 3yrs.
If there were any doubts about the cars safety it would have been withdrawn by Mercedes Benz.
I believe Mercedes are loosing money in producing this expensive to make micro car but because it's exhaust emmissions are so low with the CO2 issue and it's 799cc CDi engine being the cleanest combustion engine available they still make it.
Here in the Uk the Smart Passion CDi diesel sells for £11,300 which for a two seater city car is way too expensive, with lots of equally capeable cars costing slightly less.
I bought my CDi two years ago when they were fairly affordable and love it to bits.
Im glad i did because i would really struggle to afford the £11000 price tag but my next car will definately be a Smarty.
Only 90mph from 70 horsepower? Is that electronically limited or an extension of the wind resistance problem? My Micra will go over 90 with only 53hp motor and not revving full belt.
What lets the Smart car down is the wind resistance, so if you blast it down the highway you'll suck petrol fairly fast, and top end acceleration will be stifled by the wind. But they are good and light in town and on hills (although they still weigh 800kg mind), unlike a big volvo or cadillac
Oh, and by the way, I drive the 2001 model at work, its brilliant, lotta fun in the winter with the rear wheel drive. Only downside is the reliability of the engine, up to 2006/2007 they put Mercedes built 600cc 3 cylinder turbo engines in it (amongst others) and have proven to break down mostly around 60.000 miles or 100.000km's. The new Mitsubishi engine needs to still prove itself over the years, but it is estimated to be more reliable
The reason that the key goes in the center console is that, this way the wiring to the electrics are shorter, so cheaper. Also, the engine management system is under the driver seat
@Aspekitteh You can't really blame SUV drivers for cutting in the way when it takes a Smart Fortwo a minimum of 13 seconds to reach 60mph. 13 seconds is an eternity; even the Prius, which is already a joke to any car enthusiast gets to 60 in under 10 seconds now. The Smart Fortwo is probably the slowest accelerating new production car on the market. The electric version takes over 22 seconds to get to 60 and is limited to 62mph. It can't even reach freeway speeds in the US! What a freaking joke!
i love the diesel one its so good on fuel never have to fill up and very nippy even on the highways dont try to put veg oil in it i tried and was a bum to start first time for whole day ive never had difficulty using veg oil in a diesel motor ive used for years ,i think it might have something to do with the parts being so small easily clogs up the injectors got it started again but that was a gamble on brand new car thought i had destroyed, it thank God , seems i only have worn the ignition
What is so "smart" about the smart car? It seats only two, looks like a baby mouse, it's not safe like other cars (I dont care what the reviewer says, see the crash test video.. I flies up in the air when hit) and it costs $17,000, before taxes and fees!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! What is smart about this car? If the price were only 8k or 10k.. i'd say okay, maybe... but you can buy a larger car, same fuel economy, and is safer for less money!! Hyundai accent, Nissan Versa (starts at only $9,500!!)
@rhythm78 I am the reviewer and never state in the video that the fortwo is "safe like other cars." Please note that in this video, the question of safety is posed by a passerby, the product specialist (employed by smart or their agent) responds that it is safe and built around a safety cage. I then state that "only real world experience in the United States will tell the true tale."
@Lancefrei To date, with more than 45K smarts in the USA, there have been 4 fatalities, less than half statistically expected based on the entire USA motor vehicle fleet.
There have been many more crash survivals which could only be described as amazing. Read first hand accounts at safeandsmart under the Owner Stories tab
Combined with the fact the smart is less likely to be involved in a wreck to start with, I'm glad to know that I drive one of the safest cars on the road. And it's FUN too!
@smart451cab Thanks for the stats. My comments @rhythm78 were merely to clarify what the original script said. This review was done before the Smart had come to the U.S. in any numbers. It was not intended to render any judgment on the car's safety.
@smart451cab 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are faster if you put a Smart ForTwo on a trailer and tow it with a Ford SVT Raptor! Edmund's did it with the ForTwo electric drive. .71g max lateral acceleration is nothing either, and it can barely brake faster than a minivan. How is the slowest production car on the market fun??? Have you ever driven a sports car?? And following a smart car uphill is just torture, they never seem to exceed ~30 going uphill near my house..while even Prii(?) are doing 45+.
@Cosmo1093 You came up with a whole paragraph of ill-informed feedback from my simple statement that the smart is fun to drive? The smart makes no claims to be a sports car. You imply that only a sports car can be fun to drive, which is nonsense. The car is nimble as hell. HP? Compare it to another underpowered small car of the past, the MG Midget ... also fun to drive (I hear, never drove one).
It's not all about acceleration ... there are curves ahead. I'm on the way to the Dragon now!
@smart451cab The nimbleness of the Smart ForTwo is still limited to .7-.75g of lateral acceleration at most, since the small tires don't offer much grip and the stability control won't allow it to take turns any harder. That doesn't allow for very fast cornering, even with the super short wheelbase. Having driven one, the engine is very peppy for what it is, but the transmission is quite the opposite.. I just get bored in slower cars.
@smart451cab On famous roads in SoCal like Glendora Mountain Road, Mulholland Highway, and Mulholland Drive, some cars fly through near or at their limit of traction..cars that are capable of .90g+ turns. I floor my car too, usually for passing and as often as possible from a stoplight, and I get to 60 in the low 5 second range. I view gas as a price of performance, but my car can still get nearly 40mpg highway with cruise control..even with well over 300hp.
@Cosmo1093 BTW, those slow pokes who annoyed you were probably hypermilers. I drive mine like I stole it. When first off the line from a light, I'd be leaving your Raptor and most other dinosaur vehicle drivers way behind in my rear view mirror. No, not because I have more get-up-and-go than they do. But, because I don't mind flooring it and doing so would cost them dearly in wasted gasoline. :-)
My advice to you, since you obviously have a negative view of the smart ... DON'T BUY ONE!
@Lancefrei ive only seen fuel economy in the mid 30's with one of these. i can do as well wiht a small nissan, or hyndai for that matter. BUT still i kinda like this vehicle, and i dont like small cars much. but it is growing on me ( puns intended )
@Billy1RBstudios Precisely. The VAST majority of the time I use my passenger seat (folded forward) as an arm rest ... because the vast majority of the time two seats is one more seat than I need. And, if you observe traffic, you'll see a lot of single occupant vehicles on the road. For many people, this means the fortwo simply won't do ... at least, not for a single car family. As a second car, or for a single person (or couple) it is great!
@rhythm78 although it's not as strong as a Hummer or Range Rover, don't forget less weight = less power to smash itself! I must admit, I've never bought brand new. I have a nissan micra for £650 off of family friends and has similar economy to the smart. Don't know about safety (it'd lose a head on against most mid-sized cars), just don't crash it! Be a good driver.... Most likely accidents are parking dings thankfully
I didnt have enough room to to say that it has incredible leg room as well. I'm 6'1" and with the seat all the way back I can barely toouch the pedals. Head room isn't bad either I don't feel like I have to ducks down.
