Try being away from your family and friends for 12-18 months at a time, multiple times. These dogs provided so much morale, a reminder of your best friend back home. I never saw how it detracted from the efficiency of an unit but rather how they brought smiles and joy to those who would've otherwise wanted to cry. These dogs are what helped people get through all the loss, time away from family and the injury or deaths of your friends and teammates.
