I collect my tunes from singers, audience members, recordings, books, and sheet music. The tune for "Hell in Texas" was learned from the singing of Sam Hinton (1917-2009). The "Hell in Texas" lyric is also sung to the tune of "The Irish Washer Woman".
That is the version I'm familiar with...it was on a collection called "Cowboy Songs" from Time-Life in the early 70's. I looked up the lyrics and found that that there are even more lines in this song. I assume they are older as there is a racial slur at the very end of the possible original. Thanks so much for doing this song, it has always been a favorite of mine!
@godlessbob I think you may be thinking of the National Geographic album.I was first acquainted with this song though it as well. I'm considered putting up here on YT.

i found this song in a book called A Treasury of American Folklore, i'm glad to find this song being sung- i bound to learn it too!
