@tubamarc8891 What you're watching is a brass band. You know that. This is not any kind of representation of Jazz, British or otherwise. People turn up on here just to slate whatever they see. I don't post comments normally, but such a narrow-minded, bigoted, poorly considered generalisation needs a response. If you don't like what you're seeing move on....quietly.
It's got more Howarth and Grimethorpe (out of the colliary band tradition) in it has of Harry. But that's okay. It's the 21st century. Stylistic traditions can overlap and the world won't come to an end. A Big Band lead trumpet player would stick out like a sore thumb......
(Maynard's British band was one of the all time greats btw.....)
The comments are interesting, some more informed than others.
First of all, "brits + jazz just typically doesn't turn out too well..." I have listened to Maynard playing with his British bands - they were terrific for what they did. Derek Watkins can play in my band (or any big or small band) anywhere, at any time...ever!
There will never be another Harry James, though many will play his music for better or worse. It will thus live on. Bravo for trying and doing a wonderful job!
This is a really remarkable group of musicians. If you've never really played brass instruments, you have no idea how difficult it is to sound like these guys. It's something you work and work and work toward, and most of us will never truly get to where they are. And these guys work like dogs to get to where they can sound like this. The tuning and sound is fabulous, and these guys put on one heck of a show.
I wish I could play it like this. From someone who has practised this in a effort to play it - take it from me this is playing of a very high standard indeed. Plus it's being played to an audience of bandsmen who will be tutting over every fluff and crack. alan Morrison is the best at this type of solo.
And what has changed? Brass bands are STILL playing stuffy arrangements of classical stuff and creating all sorts of festivals and competitions based around brass music. Ugh.
He tried to turn it into a classical piece and its not. All music is open to interpretation but a swingin big band piece should be played as such, like Harry James did. This classical interpreatation took the bounce out of the piece.
@kdkn92 Thats funny because this piece takes themes from classical CORNET solos (Grand Russian Fantasia by J. B. Arban) written for this style. Interesting how its ok for classical music to be interpreted as jazz, but not the other way around. I enjoyed this performance. Take another listen.
@sigmaclass Actually Arban did not write Grand Russian Fantasia, it was written by Jules Levy.
As far as the performance, the guy has great technique and know his way around the horn but I get why people are not liking the performance. I found it rather blah, like watching someone in a Ferrari doing the speed limit.
I'm very jealous of all these iconic horn players such as David Childs, Robert Childs, Alan Morrison, Glynn Williams and some of the others. I know I've been playing Baritone/Euphonium for like 3 months and trumpet for like a few weeks but dang... They are SMOKIN' hot, eh?
Seems to me that no one of those guys have ever listened to an original Harry James recording of the piece. It is true that Harry James plays it a bit faster - but he does not have the variety of sound. He just blasts everything out indiscriminately, and many fo the fast bits are horribly "underdone".
I agree that a bit more Big Band flavour would have done Grimethorpe good - but one can only be near perfect? ;-)
username200909 - Alan is one of the most well respected cornet players of the day. I have no doubt that he can play his Arban inside out and upsidedown. He's a lovely bloke and one of the greatest cornet players there has ever been.
i agree, this arrangement is pretty boring but give the soloist some slack, harry james' father made him perfect a page a day from arbans method book, something i highly doubt this guy did. ofcourse its nowhere near as good the original but nothing ever is...props to this guy its a very difficult piece and he did far better than most would
"something I highly doubt this guy did." Typcial yank - are you aware that Alan Morrison is one of the finest cornet players around. And this is THE Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
You have no right to make careless ignorant comments like that.
Competently and cleanly played and utterly unexciting. These "pops" style performances always seem calculated to squeeze the life out of music. How can you call it "good" when it lacks any of the fire that Harry James brought to it and which is integral to the piece?
Thanks to everyone for their comments but I think you're being a little bit harsh on the soloist. try and remember that no one in this band got "paid" to play . They did it for the enjoyment. Don't try and compare it to the original.I like it.
Have to agree with the comments below. Nice try, but only Harry plays like Harry. Many have great technique, but who can duplicate the Harry James' sound!?!
i start hating this video at 2:57...good trumpet player, amazing. but the style is COMPLETELY 1985! Harry James would think this is a joke if he heard it...this fucker ever cracks a note in 4:00....nice try though :]
Great techinician on the trumpet but man oh man it was too square to be a harry james chart. as far as playing all the notes goes, great job but where was that ala harry james big band flavor. Too square for my taste but no disrespect intended bcuz he is a far better player than i am but that's just my input.

2:57-3:06 reminds me of Carnival of Venice. Just because the actual melody is simple eighth notes, it has ridiculousness in between each one.
