You this is hella offish... I have been dying to hear a live Donald Byrd cut with the Blackbyrds... Man I just wish that Keith Kilgo hada gotten into a more funky groove on the drums instead of a straight ahead 4/4... Still tight nonetheless... Thanks...
Hey youngblood. They are NOT rapping. The studio version is tighter. But Donald Byrd is one of the great jazz trumpet players. You know, real jazz, not just a "Jazzy" name.
Voiceprint101 is right - this is from a live double album recorded in 1976 - Blue Note Live at The Roxy. The two tracks featured were Places and Spaces and Dominoes. Anyway, whether its live at The Roxy or Central Park - its still a classic that doesn't date.
doesnt soun as good but as the album but its great! Amazing that the singers sound as smooth as they did on the album.. I thought was just because of production technique. AMAZING!!
Thanks for posting this. I prefer the live version over the album version, too. In fact, this is the recording that sparked me into jazz. Rock & roll had always been my bag, but by chance I heard this Donald Byrd tune (in 1979) and freaked! After that I started listening to all sorts of jazz (and lots of trumpet solos). Of course, I drifted towards Freddie Hubbard because he had so much hard blowing material. But it was Donald Byrd who first caught my ear!
Damn, i knew this was coming. Google didn't give me good pictures except this one, but it wasn't clear who it was. I tried my luck and - as you see - failed. Apologies. ;-)
Can you please also post Places and Spaces from the same album? I love the live version of that too. When I was younger I used to play this (dad's) album.
One side Note (no pun intended),
This song skips at the end right when they say "falling like dominoes" for the last time.
This is great just like Places and Spaces. Reminds me of when my brother came home on leave from the marines. Many, Many years ago.

This is one of my favourite pieces from "Places and Spaces". Donald Byrd and the Mizell brothers worked well together.

Cool.
Can you post it?
And let it play through to Dominoes?
And even let it play through to that "Please note the new note on Blue Note" funky beat too?
Am I asking too much???
My dad has it on vinyl too, but it's scratchy now. (thanks to us kids -lol)
Thanks...
