Yep, that's a blast beat alright. All the foundations for death metal were laid in the 60s and 70s - Boris the Spider has a death growl, this has a blast beat, and Symptom of the Universe has a thrash riff (and thrash basically developed into death over a long period of time).
The best part in this clip was during the 4:12-4:18 mark. I can picture Cab Calloway tap-dancing to this beat. Tap-dancing goes perfect with this piece bein' played here.
this is really horrible other than the drums. also, while perhaps the first "rock" blast beat it's not the first blast and I really doubt Billy Joel cares about Napalm Death or any such band :P
Funny how many lines in this song are re-used during his Angry young man era of playing....sounds like a viking carnival....as heard through the ears of a nintendo.
The other songs rock, but this one sounds like some kind of early Phish jam that didn't quite get there.....
Sounds Like Nintendocore

Is it really a blast beat if there's no bass drum?
Downstrokes8thnotes 3 months ago
@Downstrokes8thnotes What a stupid question.
yungkrunk 3 weeks ago
The British band Quatermass had a similar guitar-less heavy rock sound in 1970, except Quartermass had a bass player.

Did anybody really buy this album? This is said to be the worst ever heavy metal album ever recorded. I just thought I'd take a listen.

This sounds like a drummed out version of the worst background music from the arcade video games of the early 80s.

Really.
Not sure what it says about my taste, its not that bad.
Guess it wasn't mainstream enough for him so he blasted it.
This is pretty cool

Not the first ever. Albert Ayler's "Holy Ghost" had the first that I can think of.

This to me resembles ELP except there's only two band mambers with Billy providing the bass on the keyboard. A lost prog rock gem has been found.
