This is the final cut from the album "Jonah Jones-Glen Gray", which is trumpeter Jonah Jones featured on his hits (Baubles Bangles and Beads) as well as tunes associated with well known trumpeters (Hot Lips, After You've Gone, I Can't Get Started, etc.) backed by the Casa Loma Orchestra directed by Glen Gray. This edition of the Casa Loma Orch was an A-list Los Angeles studio band. This tune was written and arranged by Benny Carter. IMO one of the best Big Band records ever. 5 stars!!
This is just mindbendingly AMAZING ! ! ! Plas Johnson's tenor sax is the sound of the Pink Panther Theme, and I got to hear him play it from 30' away at the Disney Hall in LA in 2004 ! ! ! Perhaps the best session player on tenor sax, I had to start a playlist for him today, his name just keeps popping up on all the best tracks!
I've created 500 playlists for every year since 1900 and 300 of the best artists from around the world. It's a musical journey through a century of music.
This cut is from an album that Gray did with Jonah Jones. He is the trumpet you hear. The arrangement is jazzman and fellow bandleader Benny Carter. The tennor is Plas Johnson. The entire band is made up of familiar studio personnel who were virtually all veterans of the Swing era. This cut features the band more than the rest of the original album which Jonah Jones dominates.
Great example of jazz, big band style, done right. Who else but Glen Gray, a rinky tinky considered jazz guy. Love the trumpet work of, can't think of his name now.
