I thought the question would be on his clues for things a teacher says. He really was describing a teacher rather than giving things one would say ("do your homework" "sit down" "here is your assignment" etc)
Loved how Dick Clark explained why the ruling was made. Was always clear and precise as to what their rules were, and why they questioned some things.
To be honest, I think the ruling was a cop-out. If this was a good clue, then for "Things in the FBI" he supposedly could say "A Federal Bureau" and "Investigations" which we know would be buzzed instantly.
He easily could have said Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown. Although with that tan I can see why he could only think locally. ;) I think the judge simply caved because it wasn't caught right away.
This is definitely a hairy one. But I think the outcome is completely right. The name is UCLA....But the full name has "University" in it. Why couldn't you have gone with Stanford, Terry Lester? Oh why?
My guess is that if he had said the full word, which was in the answer, then they would've been buzzed, but he gave an acronym on a subject in which he was allowed to (though the college itself had the WORD "University" in the title, which gave the judge some question and Dick Clark some scare, the letter could be anything). My guess is as long as he did that, it was alright. As you said, though, they DID get that right and Dick Clark made an EXCELLENT explanation as to why there was question.
Had the clue giver said the word "university," or the word "college," obviously that would not be allowed since those you cannot give a part of the answer.
The clue giver is supposed to give a list of items that fit the subject.
@tubervidfreak That's a very bad category to put in there then since to give the name of a college or university you would almost have to give "university" or "college" in there somewhere in some form. I can't believe they let that one go. That'd be kinda like saying "name of football leagues" and of course you couldn't say football league then but you'd still have to name them. Awful category.
the-letter-u was being questioned and I agree with the judges but if I was a judge I would ? that myself to see if I buzz the person or ring the person
In this case I think the judge got it wrong. They certainly wouldn't have accepted "University of Southern California," so how can you accept "USC?"

He was really close on $100 since he said "say" just barely after she said the answer.

I thought what he was gonna debate was the $300 clue since he mentioned "stage".

I completely agree! A stage is a platform, no?

Dais was the clue that SHOULD have been buuzed. Check the dictionary, a dais IS a raised platform!

it may be a definition but not a synonym

Dais is NOT a synonym, so it was cool.

UCLA and USC were acronyms for the names, so yes, I would have given it to them.

I agree with you. I do see Dick Clark's point of why he stopped the victory. Good call on both ends.
