Classic DMC footage thanks for posting this up. All though this set is very, very basic by todays standards. This was 25 years ago. Big shout out to Chad Jackson for repping the UK..
@mmessam it was played on BBC Manchester radio by Mike Shaft, he played the top 3 mixes and Mike and Chad talked about them, I've still got the tape recording, Joe Rodriguez came second and Orlando Voorn came third.
@jahovia11 Hi! I'm promoting the event it is on Saturday 6th August 2011 at The Vaults, Castle Gates, Shrewsbury, SY1 2AB. Chad should be playing about midnight but advised to get there a bit earlier. Free entry before 9.30pm then a couple of quid after
@Hanffreundlich He's still alive dude, he's a teacher now. Teaches production and DJ skills at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford. I studied there, doing guitar performance, aside from being able to meet legendary guitar players from the guy who played for Alice Cooper, Steve Vai and others, I was also able to meet Chad Jackson, was fucking crazy shit! Genuinely lovely bloke as well, very down to earth.
We where all products of our time, and the quality of the scratching was "up2date" in 1987. furthermore, many Europeen dj's at that time still did "runin" mixes, and just non hip hop records. But when looking back, it was great experience, and we had to start some where. Not that I had any chances of winning in 87, but my mix was interupted by a "mistake" from the soundengineer, suddenly leaking some music from the soundbooth, and forced me to stop mixing and start over again.
@sweepee213 You have to realise that scratching was basic back then, unless you were Cash money or Jazzy Jeff who were both light yrs ahead of everyone. Not many dj's could pull this off back then and it still requires a fair amount skill to do it now, there were very few djs then. Transforming was brand new then and Stylus's were crap and kept jumping. Crossfaders were diabolical, most used switches to do a decent transform as the curve on a fader was shockingly bad.
so proud to say i was there and met chad down on the floor.... he started my hunger for being a scratch dj.... hell i even cut up my jeans like his and walked up the west end in them......... one of his best mixes is on the upfront 1 album against dj cheese and when i heard that my journey into turntablism began.... nuff respect !!!!!
I was there at the Royal Albert and Chad rocked but I preferred CJ Mackintosh at the time. Aint got time for the ignorant haters and their bullshit comments, where the fuck would we be today if it wasnt for these guys? More to the point where the fuck were you? Probably not even born or listening to Wham!. You're just showing your lack of knowledge and/or understanding of the whole culture. These guys were the pioneers dont ever forget it. Great days sadly never to be repeated.
this guy inspired me. his best of 84 mix for i think stu allens show. changed my life. it was the soundtrack to my teens. i took it on holiday and everythin. if any one happens to have a copy i would be very greatfull.
I'm laughing at all the chin strokers ie turntable nerds it doesn't matter how technical, fast, complicated you do something if it sounds SHIT! the only other people your impressing is other turntable nerds! ie about 0.0005% of people listening. Chad's tunes are top notch and he brings across some personality (you may want to look the meaning of that up) you don't impress us nerds!
Chad is a legend and was a huge influence for me. His DMC mixes are suberb and his tune "hear the drummer (get wicked) is one one of my all time favorite.
i know what u mean about his scratching and his cutting but with chad it was about the tracks, his mixing and his originality, he just knew his music, he was a soul guy too, a total legend, cheese could scratch much better but he tended to do a mix consisting of just 2 of the same tracks cut up for like 5 minutes rather than change and actually mix and i think to the judges probly thought it was boring..
early dmc comps had split crowds, dance types and hip hop heads..
chad will always be a legend, i remember chatting to him in 1987 when he was djing a little club in manchester with about 25 people in, such a top fella.. the guy knows his stuff...
When you look at turntablism, you have to look at the Era's, in Chads Era was alot different to what it is know it's alot more technical, but if you look at Chad's routine it was technical Transforming, Back cueing,Scratching all the elements that is around to today so because of that you have to respect it. Loved the way he transformed "Rock The Bells" Classic... Chad you deserve your place in the DMC hall of fame.
chads winning mix from 87, great at the time because chad had been in the game many years and made so many superb mixes well b4 winning that final and he really deserved his crown... his zest for entertaining and originality and sheer ability to use fresh original ideas from day one will stamp his mark on being a pioneer in the mix and scratch legends..
the guys a legend in my book...
if it want for guys like him it wunt be as huge as it is now...
I totally agree his winning set was brilliant, what i liked about it, that it was easy to understand what he was doing & because he did not make it to complicated. If you look at what he was doing it was very technical.
and they say mashups were a thing of the 00's... chad is blending vinyls like a god here
