  • Trollface to this!

  • The first troll in history

  • my music teacher played this and when he played the loud part, half of the class were jumping out of their seat.

  • I learned about many composers, but I remembered Haydn the most cause this scared the crap out of me when we listened to it in music class lmao. But I loved it. Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart, Verdi, Rachmaninoff ( if I spelled it correctly) Gershwin and many others are my favorite composers. Can't remember them all. I have my old music teacher Ms. Barlow to thank for this. I still have CD's with over 100 composers she gave us to study :)

  • music appreciation fml

  • doing this in an a level exam in a week!

  • @TheHellodelete AS level CCEA? Doing that exam, it's not too bad a course.

  • Haydn is my least favorite composer evuh...

  • @majav15mg why did he keep you up?

  • This sucks

  • Actually the fortissimo was not intended to wake people up literally. When asked, Haydn himself said, "No, but I was interested in surprising the public with something new, and in making a brilliant debut, so that my student Pleyel, who was at that time engaged by an orchestra in London (in 1792) and whose concerts had opened a week before mine, should not outdo me."

    He far outdid Pleyel.

  • typing this as I listen... i'm scared!

  • lilla snigel

  • 0:34 Almost blew my speakers.

  • im doing this song im my middl school band class... its kinda cool(;

  • This piece was intended to surprise it's listers at concerts. Haydn was tired of people who would fall asleep at his concerts. So he wrote a piece which would have quieter parts and then louder parts which would wake his snoozing listeners in surprise. Quite humorous really.

  • @LewisWizard you sir are the smartest person on youtube ive seen

  • @LewisWizard

From what I heard, Haydn worked for a prince. Everytime a concert was held for Haydn, the prince would fall asleep. So he wrote the Surprise Symphony to awaken the prince. The quiet parts would lull him to sleep, but the the louder parts woke him up. Or, that is what I learned.

  • @2magees lol, same story different title, its all hilarious no matter who is falling asleep, especially when its the kid sitting next to me in class and falling out of his chair XD

  • @2magees "Everytime [there was ]a concert ... the prince would fall asleep." He would fall asleep because he got drunk. Just thought I'd add that. :)

  • @LewisWizard Yeah. Fuckin hilarious. I actually shit meself in laffter.

  • @MrThreshold2009 So did I when I saw how you spelled the word laughter

  • @LewisWizard Don't you think most of us would have already known that?

  • hahaha, fucking music klass

  • I feel like Haydn made this to troll people. And not just that Duke he had written it for originally.

  • @Dude523 you can call it that but its true intent was to stop people from falling asleep or getting bored and ignoring the music at his concerts so he did this to scare or as the title of the song says "suprise" his audience.

  • the original ear rape

  • last year in my humanities class, the prof played this song to show us diff. music styles. One kid fell asleep in the back (like he always did) then the prof turned up the music REALLY loud at :33 seconds. The kid jumped out of his chair liek twenty feet in the air (exageration) and to this day has never fallen alseep in class. Ode to the joyfull memories of this song =)

  • i took a a music class, tho i was already interesting in this composer... it just made me love it even more... its brilliant omg why would any one want to hear the crap we listen to know compared to these masterpieces

  • This doesn't sound as good on the piano.

  • Thumbs up to Share the musical history behind this:

Back then, royal people who listen to Haydn's music fell asleep. Haydn did not like this of course, and he wrote this song, starting with a peaceful quiet melody but at one spot writing a FF note. The first time I heard it I was like ahhhh and then jerked up, surprised. This is precisely what Haydn intended for people who did not take music seriously. Well, I am a musician but.... Well that's the interesting story/history!

  • Listen to this during a test.

"What is a chemical reaction? a. a chage in chamical form b. a mixture of two elements c. your mangekyo is acting up d. the elements of harmony are broken." *yawn* Im gonna go to sleep. DOOOM Huh, oh right test.... dang it I forgot to study.

  • When my teacher played this in class everyone was half asleep then all of a sudden.....BOOM! hehe one girl actually fell out of her chair i almost had a heart attack :)

  • It's at 0:33, for those who are too lazy to wait

  • my proffessor played this piece really loud scared the shit out me. i sit in the front...

  • I love how it suddenly blasts out, scares the crap out of everyone, and then carries on like nothing happened.

  • My teacher told us that we could sleep in class while he played this. Needless to say, we were wide awake about 30 seconds into the song, haha.

  • bravo

  • LOL

  • Haydn: The First Troll

  • @kookiegod123 With pieces like "Leck mich im arsch", I'd say Mozart was a pretty big troll as well.

  • @kookiegod123 why? :P

  • @kookiegod123 The first troll was the roman emperor Neron. When he burnt Rome he was singing the trololol song. Haydn is placed 2nd. :P

  • haha haydn was a troll

  • Clever trick. After the third "bang" even the sleepiest listener gets sharpened up and starts to expect another one.

Btw, this is an excellent version too - very sharp and clear!

  • Clever trick. After the third "bang" even the sleepiest listener gets sharpened up and starts to expect another one.

  • Haydn was one of the biggest trolls of classical music.

  • i was so scared what might happen if i'm gonna hear what i was about to hear on 0:34. what i did, i walked 3 steps away from my computer.... and heard.. nothing :3 haha! i love it though! :D

  • Thumbs up if you're here because of a class.

  • @INeverWanted2010 I hope some of you discover the beauty of classical music. It's ten times as hard when it's forced upon you, I know, but give it a try - it will enrich your life.

  • @MatsEP I wasn't dogging on classical music, I actually find it relaxing. I was just pointing out that most people here are probably here because of a music appreciation class or something similar. :)

  • @INeverWanted2010 You are so incredibly wrong. People who watch this video are primarily Haydn fans.

  • @kylelandry im only watching it for a music class

  • talk about fortisimo! I haven't listened to this piece in about 4 years!! love it!!

  • MR.SHWARTS WAS HERE AND IS THE COOLEST TEACHER

  • Can we all post this to our facebooks and try and make this video get 1,000,000 views. Just to show that classical music isn't dead in a world of GaGa, Beiber and Black?

  • égelska þig mamma og líka pabbi

  • Haydn has the best sense of humor of any classical composer.

  • @presbyterosBassI yeah he does!!! go haydn!!!

  • LOL what a troll.

  • This is probably the only classical piece I've heard that is inherently funny, despite the total lack of lyrics.

  • I can still recall the mnemonic "lyrics" for this in a well-meaning c.1930s Music Appreciation book: "Papa Haydn wrote this song; it wouldn't take him very long; open up your sleepy eyes; for a big surprise... NOW!"

  • 6:40 video: Symphony No. 94 [The "Surprise" Syphony], 2nd movement; 1791 by Hyden.

March 31, 1732: birth of Joseph Haydn, Austrian composer (d. 1809).

  • 00:34 :O lool

  • 21 People were falling asleep at the Symphony in 1791.

  • thx so much, this helped me study for my music exam

  • @steakyum2 hahah yup this is one piece on my listening exam for MUS110 tomorrow 1 hunnit

  • mysteryguitarman

  • Haydn wrote this symphony, along with the other eleven of his "final twelve" as a sort of experiment and appeal to public tastes. Haydn had worked with a single family for thirty years, and so knew their tastes; he didn't know for sure what the general population would like. Each of the final twelve had a hook/catch/gimmick.

  • This almost sounds like a mix between something mozart and beethoven would write.

  • @TheMagicBolt you know, i was offended when i first read that

now the more i listen to this, i see what you mean

  • @TheMagicBolt I agree

  • he wrote this because he was tired of people falling asleep during the second movement. I learned this the hard way by being sleepy in music class today

  • First time I heard the suprise chosrd, smh!

  • I always like when they play this in music class, not only because it's wonderful, but also for the many people that fall of their chair because of the surprise, even though it's known as the SURPRISE symphony...

  • I'm playing this in my school Orchestra! Beautiful piece.

  • like what my music teacher said : "I hate Haydn!"

  • @andrei0105 nope. Haydn along other compositors made the REAL music that "constructs" our soul

  • /watch?v=CLjuRSQgigA

  • at 0:34

20 people were about to click the like button, but got startled and accidentally clicked the dislike button

  • @xiweiding xD

  • @xiweiding the story behind those startling parts is actually quite brilliant, you see, Haydn was tired of people falling asleep while listening to his music so he created the lullaby-like intro that led to that fortissimo part to startle the listeners. :D

  • @xiweiding That was hilarious

  • @xiweiding That is the best classical music joke ever!

  • @katerinawsy

    ty :D

  • @katerinawsy It's not a joke, it's there for a meaning. It was to wake up those sleepy listeners.. Every note has a meaning to it, don't tarnish music please.

  • @archersinner I'm really surprised that you would say such a thing. You don't seem to know Haydn very well, if you think that his music is above jokes. Haydn was a great joker, and that doesn't tarnish him in any way. Quite the contrary, it is something that many of us professional musicians admire and appreciate.

  • @xiweiding Ya that's what I did. I couldn't hear a thing at first, so I toggled my volume way high, then suddenly "BAAAAAAMMM!!!!!!" The entire room shook; my head trembled, and shelves in my room toppled over and left a stumbling block of mass in my room. Lightning struck; thunder emanated through the air; and a irksome feeling of wrath engaged ... and thus my right index finger delivered the final blow.

  • Franz Joseph Haydn, the First Troll.

  • 20 people jumped off their seats at 0:33
