i allways thought... why euroncap use dummies??? really? your school doesnt even let you buy a helmet? or maybe something to test it without breaking your neck and spine and pretty much everything...
As far as I can see here the only mistake was posting the video on Youtube. But seriously guys, that was a fucking stupid way to crash test your impact attenuator. Thank christ no one was hurt.
@cook4ian I was thinking the same thing for 3 seconds, then I realized that helmets protect your head from many things but do more harm than good to the neck. In this case a helmet would get the whiplash on the neck even worse, better not use it (even better is not to do crash tests with a human on board, of coarse)
@marcheseDS on the other hand, a helmet would be good if he had impacted the steering wheel, or if a flying battery smacked into the back of his head.
Great video though, but they probably could have achieved the same result with a crash test dummy and a brick, or, you know, done what everyone else does and tested the crash box when it isn't attached to the car.
@eddiec2go Well, of coarse, crash tests are to be done with dummies...still I will say that hitting the steer it is not likely with such a safety belt on, a neck whiplash on the other side it is. But let's say it is a "don't do it at home" anyway.
This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen a bunch of students doing! Look at the drivers head moving on impact and think what his brain was doing! For goodness sake you could have even towed the car up to speed on a winch without any need to have a driver on board! Stupid.
The Formula Student and Formula SAE competitions look very disfavorably on students doing stupid things. Publishing them is even worse. If you are not banned from competition for this you should count yourselves very fortunate. What does your Faculty Advisor have to say about this? You should catch hell for doing something so stupid.

If this is a test, what happens if the test fails? Someone dies?
Stuff like this is why insurance rates are so high and prevent the rest of us from having smart, safe fun.

I understand using physical testing to prove out a design, but there are better, and safer ways to do this without risking a prototype race car.
And WHERE'S THE DRIVERS HELMET! You even KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO CRASH!
jwg22 1 year ago
Because nobody got hurt we can laugh about it.
For them I hope they attached decent accelerometers and/or video recordings to proof the max 40g deceleration.
Requested videos:
- Judge's response
- Random parts falling of at the endurance due to failure of spaceframe and/or other components damaged in the 'crash'.
