Zubeldia and Mayo were co-leaders at the TdF always. And the team more often supported Zubeldia because he was better placed. The only reason Mayo was the face of Euskaltel was because he won more races than Zubeldia did. Also, they felt that Zubeldia was maxing out at around 5th placed whereas they felt Mayo had the potential to get onto the podium.

After 2003 Mayo just lost his talent completely and never got it back. The person that really lost out was Zubeldia, I seem to remeber everyone ignored him shadowed by the 'better' mayo. Euskatel have had Mayo as thier captain for the Tour every year since 2003 and yet every year Zubeldia beats him.

Zubeldia even beat him in 2003 comming 5th in the Tour and Mayo came 6th. I find it really irritating that he has never been given the chance to do anything thanks to Mayo.

I think Saunier Duval will be good for Iban at this point. He just seemed exhausted at Euskaltel. But his rides in 2003 and 2004 were amazing.

Iban Mayo and Haimar Zubeldia was such a good team together for Euskaltel. It's a shame Iban have change team.
