Hell, I have my Sempron 140 which is an Athlon II with one core disables at 3510 MHz running 1.3875 vCore with the stock cooler, max load is 43C, the ambient here is 85F. And AMD processors are less overclockable than Intel's.

I had some very bad experience overclocking my Pentium D. I only got around 15%. I found the Q6600 overclocks a lot more easily. 42% on that (up to 3.42Ghz now). It does depend a lot on the cooling/motherboard just as much as the CPU. Perhaps my old Pentium D just lacked a good enough motherboard (well it didn't even have voltage controls).

i got my e6400 which at stock is 2.13Ghz all the way to 3.5Ghz stable. Its running a stock cooler. I found i just had to do some minor adjustments in my case too keep it cool. My room gets hot but i love the speed!

I have a Dual Core E2180 with a 50% oc At stock it is 2.0ghz I've been running it a 3.0ghz for nearly 2 years & it's extremely stable. Im using, just a fairly cheep after market air cooler the "OCZ Vanquisher" So Duncan is wright & im asuming he is not using a stock cooler/heatsink. But even with the stock intel cooler I managed a 20-30% OC

Have you looked at the temperatures on each core with CPUID´s HWMonitor?

It might differ from the sensor that mesaure the entire CPU.

For example, HW Monitor says that my quad core Q6600 is at 32 C (89.6 F) but if i look at each core they are 41 C (105.8 F) per core
