The Roots is a pretty good band, but no E STREET BAND!!! just watch Live in Hyde Park, the BEST sounding DVD I've heard. They just get better with age.
I keep coming back to watch this performance. It was pure magic. I'm giving Bruce more credit than I ever had (even though It looks like he's trying to go #2) but the support by the Roots(forget the drummer's name/laziness) brought it to a whole new level. Jimmy was even at a loss. It sounded sonically richer that ever, just a hell of a performance!

I, like everyone else have the live dvd's and if you look at the end of the song you see the smile he gives Savage Love is the smile he gives Max at the end of the songs where he knows they absolutely tore the hell out of it! Jimmy should have just let bruce and the Roots play for the whole show. That would have been righetous!
@MsSongcollector i disagree...stevies great and e street wasnt the same without him but even bruce himself says nils is the best guitarist in the band...check his r&r hall of fame acceptance speech
I'm not even a Springsteen fan but that performance was pure magic. The jam at the end is basically unrepeatability. After it all, everyone was looking around like they couldn't believe it -- it was that good.
Absolutely blistering. LOVE how they're all in unison toward the end. Just one unit, in spirit, playing together. The Roots delivered. And what can you say about Springsteen? National treasure, my friends.
About Patti's vs. Bruce's version...On the recently released "The Promise", Bruce recorded Patty's version, so now there's Bruce's version, Patti's recording and the new...cover? Bruce never sits still for long. Where would rock n roll have gone without Springsteen ? It would be less of a world.

I MET THE ROOTS 352 SHOWS AGO ON JIMMY FALLONS SHOW AND I HAVE BEEN CRAZY ABOUT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM SINCE!! I AM SO EXCITED TO HAVE THEM ALL ON THE BIG SCREEN IN MY BEDROOM EVERY LATE NIGHT!!
I have now watched this video 10 times over and it's all like hearing the song for the FIRST time...when they honored him at the Kennedy Center, Jon Stewart said he empties the tank every time, whether it is for his family, his friends, or his fans...and from seeing him live, this performance only captures a taste of what you get...to watch someone jam this way for two and a half, three hours straight sets the bar REALLY high for others, hell they can't keep up! This man really is THE BEST
I usually get up for work at 6:00 a.m., and don't stay up late, but when I heard on a promo spot for Jay Leno that Bruce Springsteen was going to be on the Jimmy Fallon show, I said, work be damned...I am not missing this! anyone that missed this really deprived themselves of one of music's natural resources...longevity is the key to success in any endeavor you attempt, and for him to have rocked this long and with such passion and energy really says a lot about who he is.

I'm not a fan of Springsteen. Got nothing against him, just not a fan. But I AM a fan of Patti Smith and excellent musicians playing her music. Except for Van Zant. He needs to go lay down or something.
@MrStroodlecutie Yep, for what I now Bruce recorded the song with his band during the "Darknes on the edge of town" recording sessions at the same time and the same studios where Patty was working on "Easter", so that would have made for a collaboration in the making of the song.
@Youtubax Bruce wrote this song, thought it did not fit the Darkness album and gave it away to Patti who changed some of the lyrics. That's the story.
@spanskajohnny You're right. In fact the song was originally written for Darnkness but as you said Patti made it's own version. Anyway, I like Bruce version the most!
@Youtubax ...Yeah, I think his version on the 75-85 Live set is better than Smith's to be honest. I'm glad he still brings this one out once in a while. Not sure why he left this off of Darkness but on the other hand, I'm kind of glad Smith got it and got a little commercial recognition for it.
The Boss is unbelievable...and he just teamed up with my other hero Ray Davies for a great duet on the Kinks song Better Things...hence my name KInksBoss1
Love how at the very end of the clip, just as the song is over, the Roots' drummer, Questlove pumps his fist because he's so psyched about having been part of such a terrific performance. I am now an even bigger Roots fan than I was before. (Couldn't possibly be a bigger Springsteen fan, by the way.) Thanks, Jimmy and NBC for this great TV moment.
Amazing. As usual. He bores me with his brilliance and talent. Maybe he could suck once in a while just the make the rest of us feel better about ourselves. No, he has to go out every single time and kick ass. Every time. Amazing. :-)
The Roots are really breaking barriers. Barriers of hatred. They are absolutely (hands down) amazing. They feel their music. Both the Roots and Bruce have found the way (into many hearts).
Per Questlove in RS, the song was supposed to end on the chorus after the bridge. That was how they had rehearsed it, but at show time, Bruce and Stevie took their solos and added another 2 minutes to the song! What an audible!
one for the ages. I remember when Bruce performed on Letterman's final show on NBC before Conan took over in the early 90s. I'm gonna search for it on youtube.
his name. bruce is the chant. as it has been for a very long time. but other than that, this is a small performance and he treats it as if it was a huge concert, one of the best performers ever
@KeswickPinhead no. i meant boooooooose. his fans say his name like they're booing...@questlove said as much the night they performed lol. either way, it's an awesome performance!! :) :)
@RunyonFan omg i was simply spelling it the way it sounds when people yell it and PS a lot of Bruce fans say boooooooooooose instead of pronouncing the full brrrrrruuuuuuuuce. Clearly I saw the clip, I know who they're yelling for. smh either way I'm done discussing this inanity.
This was yet again a great performance of what is, in my opinion one of his best songs. I LOVE the version on "Live 1975-1985" , although I have to admit, for being such a huge Bruce Fan, I haven't heard nearly as many of bootlegs as some of you have. I literally cannot think of another American Songwriter with as many truly GREAT songs, with the longevity he has. Not Paul Simon, not Bob Dylan, not Warren Xevon, not Neil Young, not Jackson Browne, well you get the idea. Peace, Bruce Fans! -dave
I fucking love The Boss. I fucking love The Roots. Best performance I've seen of anything in years. Can't believe they played together. Fucking hell! So GREAT!

@FelixMerchant you're an asshole, the only thing you have right in your comment is that bruce springsteen is amazing! fallon is a huge fan of music, and i'm sure he's been a fan of bruce most of his life. it would be like meeting a childhood hero, fallon did a good job of being an interviewer and a fan.
@carver1976 i was at the show...quest love was so happy.. he said before rehearsals when they were about to start he kept forgetting to play because he was in shock that he was playing with bruce. who would have guessed the roots were such big fans of him
@carver1976 The reason for Questlove's smile has a lot to do with him getting to fulfill a lifelong dream- to share the stage with one of his heroes, Bruce Springsteen.
@rlambert15 He has got to have atleast one last world tour. He ows his fans a farewell tour before he goes. even if his full band isint there it would still be great. Just look at this performance with the roots.
The ROOTS back up the BOSS. Wow, thats a treat!

@carver1976
I saw that too. Even for a hip hop band, there's nothing better than rock and roll.

Epic.
Not surprising though because here you have two of the best live acts ever in Bruce and The Roots. Combined and it is epic.

I've been to 27 Bruce shows and I've seen The Roots 4 times.
31 best concerts I've been to.
Last night was incredible and I'm glad Bruce was up for trying something so different.

You think they will tour again huh? He best come to Boston numerous times.

@rlambert15 He has got to have atleast one last world tour. He ows his fans a farewell tour before he goes. even if his full band isint there it would still be great. Just look at this performance with the roots.
