Whats wrong with cheap labor ? If someone can do the "same" job cheaper than you than you then you deserve to get fired. Most companies don't need any inventions. MS makes junks anyways and only needs a few guys to maintain it. Why would they spend on expensive labor when its just mainly support and maintenance work.
In order a society to be innovative, the individuals need wealth and leisure time to create new innovations. In a closed economy, for each job there will be a prevailing wage based on skill and societal necessity and supply and demand forces. When you artificially drive down wages and increase work hours with H1B and other cheap labor programs, the innovators simply will never have the time and opportunity to make the innovations that lead to better quality of living.

People that I know with H1B are highly skilled and get fair amount of wages, and it is very difficult to make employers agree to support H1B in the field of STEM.
I know people like in business (non-STEM) with (just) bilingual skills get H1B relatively easily and make very low salary.

PhDs are usually low skilled as they have wasted time doing research/thesis instead of getting job specific experience. May be your brother can get a job of a scientist or analyst which are rare anyways. Most H1s are low skill such as PhDs etc and should be sent back. The U.S. is not legally required to issue or extend a single H-1B visa. The USCIS states that H-1B visas are a 3 year visa (total stay limited to 6 years) for temporary, nonimmigrant workers. These workers are to fill specialty positions when this talent cannot be secured from the local labor pool. Employers are not required to advertise the positions and are given a legal means to discriminate against U.S. workers. Right now, we should not issue and not renew another H-1B visa.

I remember back in 2000 or so when the technology bubble burst that SUN Micro Systems (now owned by Oracle) actually faced a class action lawsuit for taking H1 workers instead of qualified U.S. citizens. This country is so foolish. The law makers have to get involved and reduce the H1 Visa. The only way to do it is to charge companies that hire these Visa holders, a additional fee. Make it cost the same as it would to hire a American straight out of a high ranking College like Stanford or Harvard. Make it worth for us to lose our jobs to a out side hire. The H1B visa only exists to displace Americans with low-wage foreigners who will gladly work long hours and weekends, and have no family here that can interrupt their work. The whole thing is a crock. With 20% unemployment and thousands upon thousands of unemployed technology professionals, there is NO need for this visa. Yet corporations keep claiming they can't find "qualified people" and that they need the "best and brightest" when it's really all about paying peanuts for workers.

h1b=indentured labor. US government is in bed with the lobby of h1b employers. Asking money from an employee to file a visa is illegal but no law has been able to stop the practice. Sponsors frequently find ways to hold employees to ransom in exchange for sending their visa documents as the h1b visa mandates the employer holds all the bargaining chips. No special grievance cell or division in the US government for employees who want to lodge complaints against their exploitative employers.

In order a society to be innovative, the individuals need wealth and leisure time to create new innovations. In a closed economy, for each job there will be a prevailing wage based on skill and societal necessity and supply and demand forces. When you artificially drive down wages and increase work hours with H1B and other cheap labor programs, the innovators simply will never have the time and opportunity to make the innovations that lead to better quality of living.

According to the CIS, there are about 500K skilled jobs in the US currently held by guest workers like H1B/ L1 not to mention the visa over stayers that number about 400K. If these guys were deported and these programs shut down, the unemployment rate for college graduates would be almost zero!

People that I know with H1B are highly skilled and get fair amount of wages, and it is very difficult to make employers agree to support H1B in the field of STEM.
I know people like in business (non-STEM) with (just) bilingual skills get H1B relatively easily and make very low salary.

Out of college I worked for an employer who hired H1B workers. Through talking with them I was able to figure out they made roughly 30% less then someone from America.

I was talking about computing in general. Babbage, Bool, Lovelace laid the ground work with analytical looms. Later Turing and Von Nuemann created programmable electronic computers. Until WWII electronic computing was largely done in England. Its also killed innovation since the best and brightest here who would start the new techs are scared to enter the field due to low wages and short careers.

Gates did some good stuff early on: Fat16 file system, MS Basic in Dos, WYSIWYG and his 1975 manifest of software intellectual property rights set the stage for the software revolution. After 1983 when he went corporate, he kind of lost it. Nothing that made MS billions was actually invented there: DOS, Windows,, Browser, Basic or Office Apps. And, NONE was done by H1Bs!

Its reputed to bring in skilled workers but the loop holes allow almost any idiot in - the "or equitant" clause which the "employer" can interpret anyway they want. I read that one H1B that came in as a business analyst was actually working a cookie dough mixing machine - that high tech!

PhDs are usually low skilled as they have wasted time doing research/thesis instead of getting job specific experience. May be your brother can get a job of a scientist or analyst which are rare anyways. Most H1s are low skill such as PhDs etc and should be sent back. Once my green card gets converted to Citizenship in a year from now they should also deport all green card holders

Parts suppliers, component manufacturing, and various assembly line jobs from the American auto industry get shopped out around the world. People complain about quality issues, U.S. Auto workers who may or may not get to play a part in putting together the finished product take the blame in public opinion. More jobs are outsourced to countries that can't seem to make a quality pair of pants. See a cycle here?

So much for globalization being good for us. 787 has been delayed FIVE times because many suppliers' parts don't work (like Indian HCL software for the plane). Boeing is being sued by several airlines for $200 million due to missed deadlines. So much for globalization being good for us.

The fact is companies cannot move their operations overseas. Bad infrastructure, lousy power & phone systems, disease, lack of medical care, and legal systems, not to mention terrorism all means U.S. companies have to stay in U.S. The companies want to enjoy U.S. stability and infrastructure, but don't want to employ U.S. citizens who support it. I can guarantee you we will see laws passed requiring companies to hire Americans first.

The U.S. is not legally required to issue or extend a single H-1B visa. The USCIS states that H-1B visas are a 3 year visa (total stay limited to 6 years) for temporary, nonimmigrant workers. These workers are to fill specialty positions when this talent cannot be secured from the local labor pool. Employers are not required to advertise the positions and are given a legal means to discriminate against U.S. workers. Right now, we should not issue and not renew another H-1B visa.
