It really is not being environmentally conscious or economic conscious to dumpster dive for food. The chances that you could get sick and even deathly sick goes up every time your rummage through people's trash. The medication and treatment to overcome that sickness far outweigh the savings to the economy and to wallet in the long run. Penny wise pound....well you understand what I'm talking about. You'd be better off spending your time working or handing out clean sandwhiches to the homeless.
Any vegetable matter is okay too, if you have an area to grow your own vegi. Just bury it for the worms and you improve your soil no end. I found 40 apples the other day, my garden worms will be very happy now.
yea i suggest red sex link hens they lay very well even in the cold and dark they are quiet [you dont need a roosterand really dont want one].
i do suggest that you get babies week old maybe and feed them chick starter out of your hand and pick any sound you like to use when doing this.and they will come when called handle them a lot so they get used to you.and definatley clip those wings[just the long flight feathers]our neighbor didnt and lost 18 out of 20 after a storm.you get 200 eggs each.
i have 30 chickens that recycle my garbage food from the local supermarket.
if you have never been around chickens it will amaze you the nasty stuff they eat and give you nice fresh clean healthy brown eggs.i gave them a roadkill rabbitt it was gone bones and all in 1 hour.the neighbors dog killed 18 of my hens until the rooster got him penned in a corner he didnt make it out.20 # dog gone in 1.1/2 day.and they come when i call them better than any dog,and sit in my lap to groom
its so sad with all the food that just gets chucked away by people who cares just about money. its like 'well if we're not using it some other person will sure as hell not benefit from it cause we paid for it'
thats not sustainable thinking.
i only eat my bananas brown anyway!
a friend of mine once lived off dumpster diving in seattle for a couple of months and he loved life. haha.
If you are worried about the waste in NYC, start a food bank, you don't need the government to help you. Get some volunteers, talk to the local grocers, then talk a church into letting you distribute it from there. We do it in the South all the time.
If you go to the loading dock of big supermarkets you'd be amazed at what gets thrown out., and it's criminal over here in australia about the huge amount of food that gets thrown away by fast food outlets at the end of the day that could and used to go to the homeless but doesn't anymore

It's crazy. I started to move forward with my solution to this today at least to keep it out of the landfills.

Thanks for the comment. Agreed it is some messed up thinking. Need to figure out a solution to present to the stores. That's my next step.

Thanks for the comments. The food bank idea is an interesting one that I'd definitely consider exploring. Appreciate the idea.
