I was there the night when they did this! It was a very sad day indeed, but this fantastic homage to the king of pop made everybody smile. MJ would be proud.
While I'll be the first to admit I'm not the biggest Jazz fan (my tastes run from funk-rock to old-school punk), this is a killer cover of "Billie Jean". A good song is a good song no matter how you play it. BTW, the piano player Mike Melvoin is the father of guitarist Wendy Melvoin. She used to be a member of Prince & the Revolution. Musical talent must be genetic. :-)
Yeah this was right after MJ died so I knew he would do some kind of tribute...my friends were debating what he would do and I guessed he would do Billie Jean. Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it.
@Clickandkick dude: are you out of your mind? you think he just has the arrangement to an on the spot michael jackson tribute by kenny burrell? do you think this is a high school band? are you familiar with kenny burrell? does your combo play music that is as retarded as your questions?
@letebaguere You arrogant jerk. It's a perfectly reasonable question that speaks more as an appreciate of the art and not one's ego. In Burrell's version the changes are clearly modified from MJ's version (try listening to the changes w/ your ears, not your ego; it's been transformed to a classic minor blues). And given that Burrell, the piano player & the sax player are all reading, you must be blind as well as tone deaf. An ad hoc interpretation of the song wouldn't be charted in the slightest
@AllknowingGuitarGuru you didnt read my comments you imbecile. i was clowning the guy because he thought that maybe kenny handed him the chart afterwards- he asks the guy who is taking the video of burrell for burrell's chart on billey jean. it shows a shocking lack of understanding as to what's going on. learn to read, then you can come talk to me about listening.
@letebaguere There was no misunderstanding. You'd have no way of knowing Texasflood93's relationship with Burrell. I have over 30 arrangement I got from guitarist Ted Green and several from guitarist Joe Pass & trumpeter Clark Terry. It's not a big deal, people share and sell arrangements all the time. You're an arrogant jerk who knows nothing about jazz and you got caught prematurely opening your pie hole. Deal with it and limit your sarcasm to your expertise... stacking tampons at the Walmart.
Woohee, the great Kenny Burrell doing MJ.I've seen it all now.kenny Burrell is without doubt a ledgend.he is one of the few true masters still with us
fed my infant son while listening too jimi hendrix. now its time for his nap and we chose burrell over coltrane. damn my son is blessed too be exposed to the good stuff before "pop american culture" gets to him.
hi im left hand jazz guitarrist one of my main influences and hero is kenny burrell ym very happy to know he is still with us with love to the great kenny burrell
taught the sax player everything he knows. I mean he taught me everything he knows. I mean i taught him everything I knew he'd know so i didn't bother to teach it to him.
I actually lived in Greece for a while, and the jazz scene is amazing there, just like much of europe... but jazz is american by birth right, and it's lost in a culture thriving on pop culture posing as art... it really sucks...

Kenny Burrell is the real jazz hero. Because of him I began to explore jazz. So many years of non-stop workin' and he is still do his job well.
Long Live mr. Burrell and God bless you!

I love that it's completely recognizable, but Kenny also projects his Blue Note 60's jazz sensibilities the entire time.
