  • Awesome! NIce work.

  • remainds me of gary moore;-)

  • "See how that works?" ....nope :(

  • nice old school trick, a whole bunch of guitarists use it, But try repeating some simple figure fast as you can while with right hand you do some kind of mixture of what youre doing in this video and picking every note. that is scary :))).

  • i can't seem to do it bleh

  • u sir are a rock and roll OG

  • Damn, that's a great looking Jackson you have there. What year, I don't see a recess, must be an early model.

  • thanks for sharing, cool technique

  • That's a bitchn trick!!!! got anymore 80's awesomeness to share with us?????

  • Yeah! Autoflanging is awesome!

  • Thanks all for the kind comments here. It was Eddie that nailed this riff first, in history. I hope you can find something cool to do with it..."clink'

  • Finally after an hour of searching harmonic tricks i found this video. Is there a name for this trick?

  • @jbrannon01 It's called a harmonic slide

  • does it matter what kind of strings or guitar you have to be able to do that?

  • Somebody get me a Doctor - Van Halen (1979)

that's when it was made famous..

  • first time i heard this was eddie on wac first, i think it was the song fools, a great trick that i think eddie introduced to us, eddie is awesome

  • looks like other than guitars in his basements there are little kids... o_o

  • Wow i do that except i do a legato between the A and D strings and pick up while my palm goes up & down on the harmonics. On the A, B and C# of the E string.

    :D

  • do you need really high output pickups or something?cuz it doesnt work when i try it on my les paul...

  • @undergroundamericana i have two guitars..one les paul and one washburn...it works on my washburn but not in my les paul...actually i cant even hit simple harmonics!

  • @undergroundamericana It's in the drive. The more there is, the louder the harmonics.

  • What color is that Jackson?

  • Haha! that was cool!

  • Thank you, I've always wanted to know how to do this.

  • Hey, thanks for posting the clip! Cool!

  • The earliest example I can think of is Tommy Bolin on a track called Crazed Fandango from 1974./5, The Teaser deluxe version has 2 takes and one features this technique at the beginning.

  • Zakk Wylde does that.

  • @LWRCftw Eddie Van Halen did it first.

  • @TheFutureEVH that fuckers dead

  • @p2psux5 He's obviously not dead...

  • @TheFutureEVH Dead, as in, lost his luster. But his music never dies!

  • @TheFutureEVH shows you how much i know about him

  • Awesome man!

  • Somebody get me a Doctor! Somebody give me a shot! Nice job man! Eddie would be proud! Peace.

  • beautiful guitar! i have a 95 pro same color (slightly darker) and its my favorite guitar

  • Nicely shown and explained. Good lesson. ;D

  • @MasterclassNL somebody get me a doctor

  • Heh - nice, thanks!

  • haha this guy is a boss in his Hawaiian tshirt

  • nice thanks man!

  • good info, ive always wondered where that sound comes from

  • cool

  • STAN LEE

  • SOMEBODY GET ME A DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • its called auto flanging and since ive learned it,i cant play a full song without doing it. good for van halen, bad for john mayer

  • where were you a few months ago I've wanted to learn how to do that forever!!!!!!! Ugh! I learned how to do it from John Sykes

  • Eddie Van Halen was the architect of this trick.

  • @klblackstar John Sykes did it to...not sure who did it first...

  • WOW, thanks.

  • zackk does this alot.

  • ive never seen that awsome!!

  • lamenesss.... showboating guitar tricks suuuuuuck.....

  • Nice bro...very easy to "pull off" (pun intended). Thanks for the tip.

  • Thats cool you should play some super low stuff

  • Does Eddie know you're stealing his licks?

  • Yeah, Eddie made that harmonic lick famous.

  • This is a great video, thanks :)

  • good color guitar.jackson charvel best !

  • nice guitar

  • is this auto flanging? Like Zakk Wylde does?

  • i always did this using pinch harmonics and tremolo picking taking the pick up and down the string over the pickups. same end result i just never was able to get it loud enough to my liking to do it the way he demonstrated, which is the correct way to do it.

  • Jackson forever. i got a King V JS30. Isnt much but its still a Jackson ^^

  • @dontBugly Hell Yeah bro, I gotta Jackson King V Demmelition in Red.. Luv it :) better than my Alexi 600 lol

  • "Rolling Harmonics"

  • That's awesome! You rock bro! <3

  • The Van Halen song you just played was from 1979, Not the 80's.

    MISLEADING TITLE.

  • Very Nice Thanks...

  • SOME BODY GET ME A DOCTOR THAT WAS HOT!

and its funny cuz i posted that then u played the riff... eeire

  • SOME BODY GET ME A DOCTOR THAT WAS HOT!

  • it took me years to figure this out john sykes did this to the extreme check out the beginning of "bad boys" by whitesnake he also did it well....

  • BTW I SAW THE VIDEO FOR PRAY FOR YOU!!! I WANT TABS!!!! THAT SONG WAS SOO BADASS!!! i want a clean version of it! so i wont have to listen to it on the video : l i downloaded the video to my phone as an mp3 but id like to hear the clean recorded version :DD its a goodsong!

  • i cant get this down :/ ive watched the video a million times, ive even done it with something metal to make the noise come out. it wont come out :C as soon as i do the pull off and go to touch the strings to make the harmonics come out, it goes into a dead mute and no noise comes out from the taping nor from me sliding my hand up the neck :/ im trying to add this skill into a song im doing. so i can show off :D please help me nail this down. maybe another video with longer instructions?

  • @about823jews Someone correct me if I'm wrong but it might be your guitar/guitar setup. The harmonics on mine my aren't very good either, can't do pinch harmonics or get a harmonic note out of the harder frets.

  • @halfmetal74 my harmonics are right on spot because harmonic work is what i usually do on my guitar :D. if you cant do pinch harmonics it might be your amps to weak. or youre not placing your fingers lightly enough for it to pick up. because i know how to do pinch harmonics with the natural and made harmonics but my amps to shitty to carry out the sound :/

  • cool........... awesome tricks dude

  • Awesome trick!

You´ve more tricks like that up your sleve?

Been playin for 20 years but first now been looking at soloing, so stuff like that realy helps!=)

  • u call dat easy?? :O

  • its called auto flanging....zakk wylde and eddie van halen used it alot........wah pedal helps

  • @0786MrDrummer It is not. It's called palm harmonics. Eddie Van Halen invented it back in the '70s, and it can be heard on 1979's Van Halen II album.

  • how do you get that tone ??

  • nice job

  • I think That trick is used in BLS 's Fire It Up .. Am i correct ?

  • @RyanGuitarPlayer214

    i think you are...around 1:10

i'll try that later when i'm back home...

thx@MonsterZeroo for showing us the trick\m/

  • Damn that both sounds cool and looks cool, and I've never thought of using my pinky-finger while doing that. Thanks man, I'm gonna grab my guitar and practice your method straight away ;)

  • claudio sanches does this :3 its called the icicle effect

  • DANG, IS THAT A SIGNATURE GEORGE LYNCH GUITAR IN THE BACKGROUND !!?!?!?!

  • @Acecombatgamertwo either george lynch or maybe john petrucci

  • @Acecombatgamertwo Ya looks like a lynch guitar. or the one Satchel uses from the great parody band, Steel Panther.

  • Ok, you can try with a coin. I don't know if this is the proper way to do this, but I only touch the string, slightly with the coin , without preasure and sounded something like this (it wasn't as good as it)

  • thanks man, cheers from Canada!

  • thanks so much man, been trying to figure this one out since i saw /watch?v=bjEnp3FC8kk at 6:10 and you helped me so much

  • @jeffhardytheextreme0 put it on your bridge pickup

  • so ur tapping andd doing a harmonic slide at the same time? cool story bro.

  • this really doesnt work that greta unless u have $500 pickups

  • I FUCKING KNEW MAGNUM P.I> PLAYED GUITAR! You really let your hair grow Mr. P.I. :D (P.S. Nice video! Very helpful)

  • use your palm, not your finger. works ten times better. the side of your palm that is. it's called rainbow harmonics, and is the proper way to do it. probably why its not working for you guys. looks like this guys got big fingers.

  • It helps if you have hot pickups guys. I doubt that fender squire has hot pickups.

  • Straight Outta Zakk Wylde's Playbook!

  • im muting the string :( help

  • Very cool lick indeed!.I just heard this in a song by DeathMaster..the guy comes out of the lead with this lick..i think the song is facekicker..THANKS for posting the lick bro!

  • FUCKIN EXCELLENT

  • this guy should have shred the web and won

  • Cool trick! Would love to see more of your guitar tricks.

  • SOMEBODY GET ME A DOCTOR!!

  • @starvinmarvin72 YEP!!! I NEEDED ONE BACK IN THOSE DAYS BUT DIDNT HAVE THE SENSE TO GO LOLOLOL!!

  • EVERYONE WHO IS SAYING THEY CANOT DO IT.....

    1. MUST HAVE A LOT OF GAIN AND I MEAN ALOT

  • Very nice mang! Thanks

  • wtf i cant do dis lol

  • thats amazing i cant do it

  • aw man, thanks! That is a totally 80's trick! I've heard that in many songs, and I guess I just never knew what the frick they were doing, so I never even bothered to try and figure it out! Had I not randomly clicked on this video, I would have NEVER known. Thanks! Its funny you mentioned "wearing a ring" cause thats how I always thought they were doing it.

  • i heard this from richie sambora...he's one of my guitar heroes when im still a noob... but up until now i still can't do it smoothly!

  • Thanks for all the kind comments here....I hope this adds to your tool box....let me know...."clink"

  • That's awsome props dude!

  • amazing!

  • SWEET.. ><

  • Cool, thanks man.

  • Ha maybe you dont know very much if you think that is a harmonic..... be nice now :)

  • Isn't that in Van Halen's "Somebody get me a doctor?"

  • @simpleben09

    yessir

  • hey , nice trick, ive got a cool new one ive never seen anyone do before in my video section, check it out. thanks

  • @twisterellafell

You must not see very much, it's just using a whammy bar on a natural harmonic, Dimebag Darrell and Synyster Gates did it, except with different harmonics. As a matter of fact, that's pretty much the outro in Cemetery Gates by Pantera, nothing really new or special.

This trick, however, is very interesting, sounds much like Van Halen, I wouldn't recognize it from any other artist to my knowledge.

  • @PGspeed88 Ha maybe you dont know very much if you think that is a harmonic..... be nice now :)

  • @moparmadman perhaps but he played a charvelle which most consider a jackson but not quite but he has graced manny guitars in his days!

  • wow ive been wondering how to do that

  • Eddie didnt play a jackson

  • @bigkeaner - he's played them allllll!!!

  • Thank youu sir! :D

  • I WONDER why this is linked to my band video :O

    really neat trick
