  • If tennis was The United States then Federer must be Barack Obama

  • 17 GS Until Now the best in History...Nadal, could be but let wait if he can pull this out and break Federer Record ok.

  • look he never look the rival's field after a few seconds of the shot... o como quiera q se escriba jajajja

  • this is just a defensive shot. He hit it flat without much pronation and internal arm rotation.

  • the best backhand

  • Perfect

  • Hes majestic...a true master

  • Who is the second commentator? Sounds a bit like Boris Becker, no?

  • NEDM123 if one handed backhands are notoriously weak then Federer and Sampras wouldn't win 27 combined...

  • You are right and physics can show it.

One handed are harder than two handed if you can hold it because it allows a greater reach, thus a greater lever which means more power.

But, it's even harder than forehands. Because you hit forehand open and backhand closed, you benefit of a greater rotation degree with your backhand. Also, you use back muscles rather than chest to import power to your arm and they are way stronger.

  • I've always been in awe of his amazing backhand. It's able to place the balls, yet is extremely powerful and elegant.

  • Roger Federer is the best.

  • espectacular

  • toto

  • best backhand of all time, including two handers?? connors and borg had great backhands. edberg had a sick backhand. agassi could murder the ball from the backhand on return of serve, roger usually slices it back. gasquet has a great one hander. warinka, a fellow swiss has a sweet one hander.

  • This is the BEST backhand in history. This is what seminars have to teach. Some other players have pretty good one hand backhands (Stanislas Wawrinka, Richard Gasquet etc) but nothing like this...

For evidence go to Hewitt vs Federer 2006 US Open tie break...see for yourself!

  • If it´s THE best backhand in history, how come Nadal could break down Federer on the backhand side so federer couldn´t hit many really good returns? (I don´t think its bad just not the best)

  • Show me a player who can handle Nadal's high bouncing balls. The only two players to beat Nadal on clay in the past three years were Juan Carlos Ferrero and ROGER FEDERER. He's won 115 of his last 117 matches on clay. Then there's grass, which has slowed down to the point where it's almost "green clay" at this point. In the last 3 years, the only player to beat Nadal on Wimbledon grass was Federer (twice).

Federer's backhand hasn't been nearly as good as it used to be, though.

  • Gaudio, who has a great singlehander, is tied in his H2H against Nadal, all matches having been on clay. What I really would have loved to see is Nadal up against Kuerten in his prime.

  • Yeah, but Nadal dropped his guard from shoulders to hip to be more consistant on all surfaces.

It canceled much of his spin and as you saw him at Garros, he no longer has this spin which gripped and bounce far and high. He no longer uses a big loop or very rarely. RDS showed pictures of his guard now and three years ago.

He's now better against others all around the circuit, but he lost his major advatage against Federer. He still has great spin, but way less than before.

  • because nadals a lefty...

  • no nadal plays lefty but is really a right

  • yes i know that. He only plays tennis as a lefty but everything else he does with his right.

  • Which makes his backhand actually some kind of double handed forehand, and that's the reason he can produce such powerful shots with it

  • Nadal's advantages is on his forehand which naturally plays on righties backhand. Why there? Because he used to settle himself for a big preparation which created incredible amount of spin and we have to admit he's not the weakest on the circuit.

It made balls bounce very high and far on righties backhand. It explains why he ounce played about 70 to 75% of his shot on Federer's backhand.

Nadal changed and it cancel this advantage; he now uses a more compact swing.

  • Why? He needed to stand number one which means he must be great on hard court which are quite faster than Garros which is slow and Wimbledon which is about mid.

He's now more consistant on all court which helps him against every player... each beside Federer. You need almost perfection to beat him.

Look a picture of now and one of three years ago. You will see his guard has been dropped from shoulders to hips.

His game is still great, but he needed this against the MASTER Federer.

  • its very good but its not the best.

  • bullshiiit...

  • Fed-Express is the best!!! ;)

  • Perfection.

  • sounds like Becker commenting..!

  • his backhand is not the best, but he can hit a winner in important situations.

Federer has a very good forehand, good backhand, good volleys and good service.

Gasquete has a better backhand, but his forehand is average, his volleys and service is average. So gasquete backhand is the only shot that is very GOOD.

  • yea, true thats what my coach says, too, who has coached andy rodick, but rogers backhand isn't that much off of richard, if he gets the backhand nadals is preety much done

  • is federer eastern on the backhand?

looked like it one the video

  • It's not hypothetically, it is better than Federer. First, Federer's backhand lands too short. Second, he can't put high balls down like Gasquet, Kuerten, or Gaudio does. Third, he makes a lot of backhand errors if you compare those guys I mentioned. And fourth, compare Federer's backhand sound and forehand sound.

  • all Roger ;] his backhand is amazing :D

    nice.

  • gasquet have the greatest back hand in the world

  • Oh it's true, it's true. I totally agree with that.

  • The Swiss Watch keeps on ticking, here showing the world how to swing it like a samurai. Looks very much like Laver's. And Musashi's.

  • beautiful comment

  • thanks mate - how are things down under?

    Cheers

  • Laver's backhand and Federer's backhand looks hell a lot different to me.

  • Gasquet has a good backhand shot no doubt. But Roger's backhand is more precise and more deadly, and that's why he has won 8 Grand Slams. The Fed is The Man!

  • ignorant comment, Gasquet's is far superiror. Remember gasquet is only 20 when you make ridiculous remearks like that. What was your hero doing at that age? Gasquet's bachand is better now and will be 10 times better when he is the same age.

  • lol dude anyone reading this can tell boromir1 is ignorant by how cocky he sounds haha no one cares what u say so get a life and stop writing so much

  • gasquets backhand is better federer is much more superior in all other aspects tho

  • Agreed.

  • Federer won his 12 slams because of only 3 things, his serve (on grass), his forehand, and his athleticism that allows him to retrieve so many balls, which makes the opponent feel like they have to hit the lines to get the point, when they actually don't have to, but it helps a lot to do so. His backhand really had no big part in his achievements.

  • Well, we now know three things about you:

    1. You're a complete idiot

    2. You should be shot

    3. You've either never seen Federer play or you don't even know what a backhand is.

  • what an ugly backhand. Gasquet's is far superior. Under pressure it folds like a pack of cards.

  • ^must be a nadal fan :P

  • has got to be a nadal fan, definitely.

  • Hell ya!

  • you're not serious, are you?

  • the best one handed backhand since ken rosewall!

  • beautiful

  • Good One
