this is one of scorseses lesser known movies but i thought it was alright. i know tim burton was gonna direct it but scorsese couldnt make last temptation of christ so he came back and said he'd make it cause he was the original choice and tim burton gladly stepped down
Scorsese's visual style is often too kinetic for my tastes. With most of his early films there was a grace and fluency to his style, but from the mid-80's onward it really became overwhelmingly paranoid. Only recently has it mellowed somewhat with films like 'Shutter Island'. 'After Hours' was really the first of Scorsese's paranoid films, and for that I really can't properly appreciate it.
UNDERRATED MASTERPICE!...BRILLANT! ORIGINAL!...SCORSESE GENIOUS! HE WAS THE BEST FILMKAER OF THE 70S AND 80S....NOW HE IS DOING INTERESTING THINGS BUT NOT GREAT LIKE IN THE PAST!
@artonfireonline - Do you like Kundun too or no? Thats another Scorsese film most fans seem to dislike but I enjoy that film a lot too and think its highly underrated
@artonfireonline AFTER HOURS IS A TRULLY GREAT FILM UNDERRATED...BUT BRINGING OUT THE DEAD IS ONE OF HIS 4"BAD" MOVIES....IN 22 FILMS SCORSESE HAS MADE ONLY 4 BAD ONES ( BOXCAR BERTHA, NEW YORK NEW YORK, THE COLOR OF MONEY , BRINGING OUT THE DEAD).
@artonfireonline why so sensitive?....it is wrong what i wrote to you?...nobody is telling what you have to do or not!, it was a recomendation!....thanks for being such an IDIOT!
People in New York are probably more dependent on public transportation than any other part of the world, retard. Something you don't know because you've never left your village. Just keep shagging sheep in your Austalian craphole.
@konzwambii This is a fantastic movie—frightening and completely hilarious. The whole problem is that it DOESN'T get any attention. I had to stumble upon it.
@Hypnotoad27 If you're looking for a similarly nightmarish adventure try "Frantic" with Harrison Ford. It's not surreal like After Hours but it'll make you uneasy in a way that's reminiscent of Scorcese's work here.
When i basicly accidently saw this movie on TV i was blown away... it's absolutely awesome, it kinda reminds me of Seinfeld, how everything comes together in the end... brilliant movie.
You kinda hafta show the unfolding events in the Trailer, or know one will want to see it. But after you watch the trailer - its kinda not too surprising.
@saberbazer This is totally a funny movie. It's dark and frightening and disorienting and heartwrenching and gutwrenching, but I still laughed all through it.
Within the first 15 minutes of watching the film, it was instantly added to my favourite films list. So good, but none of my friends appreciate it's beauty! Oh well, their loss! haha
I remember when Griffin Dunne was in a movie with Madonna. At the time, a luck shpit. I remember when he had to marry this woman who had a father who created a book with like a thousand marriage rules. lol Oh yeah it was "Who's that girl?". This movie was strange. The movie was set up nice though: A really bad night waiting to happen so that he would end up right where he began. lol
@rojinio Well, they're not exactly similar but I'd say the short of Scorsese in "New York Stories" is worth the viewing and "Living in Oblivion" is also "similair" because it's another crazy little great story like this one! Plus it's very funny
acho q tou a fim de ver esse filme d novo, mas se vc jah assistiu nao ve esse trailer q conta tudo antes, eh estupido e o filme eh bom pracarai! comedia supense tragicomico
I was a musician living in L.A. when this came out and my roommate was an actor. He came home one night all excited and said we HAVE to go see this movie, so we scraped together all the loose change we could find in the apartment and we had just enough for two tickets. It made the whole experience that much sweeter, because we were poor but we were happy and it was a truly great and unique film.
@shmutzman Yeah, this movie opened my eyes to what a director can do when he's just having fun. I've read that Scorcese made this after a nightmare experience with another film (a religious epic), and he was worried that he may not be taken seriously in Hollywood again. So he just let it fly and said screw it, I'm doing what feels right. My former roommate does mostly plays now, but he managed a decent role in Field of Dreams, as Costner's flashback dad playing catch with him in a cornfield.
Wow I didn't know back in the 80s people actually made living being some word processor for a company lol. I wonder if they got payed well considering computers wee not even close of being high tech!
...this is one hell of a movie!......I can't recommend it enough.....sort of an updated Wizard of Oz.....Paul just can't seem to get back home......no flying monkeys....but crazy Mr Softy vendor, local artists and Miss Beehive 1960......oh boy! and don't start me off about that classic soundtrack........a shore thing.....
He made the king of comedy as well. Both are dark comedies, which makes sense considering Scorcese's trademarks. No way would he direct "candy comedies"
I clearly remember my 1st experience of this movie. 1986 portable 16" B&W TV in my bedroom, changed the channel & watched what was on, an hour later still watching, totally gripped. That's only ever happend to me on 1 other movie. I loved this movie, there is a new & unexpected surprise around every corner, I love it, love it, love it, still one of my favourite movies.
exactly. he makes a perfect example of how a light hearted film should be handled. one of his best works and a perfect example of him at his top directorial form as well.
well, fuck me... the ruiners have struck again, ive never seen it, and im always careful not to ruin movies for people, but this movies very own trailer went ahead and did it... thank you marketers who slice and dice for baby, think we all have 1 minute attention spans and in essence create all the 1 minute attention spans by the deeds you carry out in the first place!
The trailer may have ruined some plot points, but it's the execution of them in the narrative that is masterful. If you know Scorsese, you know what I mean. YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE!

Missed the first 20 minutes or so, but was totally hooked - by the end of the film I thought 'what a cool movie!', but never knew the title! That is until last night - just caught the last 15 minutes but now at least I know what it is called!
Totally one of my all-time favourite movies, been waiting to see this again all these years, so I managed to locate a region 2 DVD this morning! Can't wait to see it again!!!
Griffin Dunne - This is an excellent actor. i think most people say brad pitt and tom cruise are good actors cause they are pretty... they're shit compared to this great performance by dunne
Comparing this movie to nick and nora is actually pretty bad. This movie is what soho was before retailors moved in and landlords started charging 18 grand a month for rent.
I saw this movie last week on TV and Griffen Dune is Absolute Master Class as the ordinary nice guy mixed up with the Down Town New York Wierdos that come out at night. Classic Scorsese urban nightmare.....
This was on TV last night and forgotten how good it was. Recognised so many people. A true 80's classic and I've had nights like that. It makes me love my mobile phone...
so did i, i never saw it before but when i turned over i couldnt change the channel i was totally swept up in the plot. its rare for a film to do that
the king of comedy and after hours are my favorite scorsese movies not just based on the fact they are both set in my favorite city and are warm inspiring stories and obviously beautiful films, but because these two films from the mid 80's are the most bashed (critically and commercially) films scorsese has made however they were just unfourtunate to fall in the shadow of what many consider too be scorsese's greatest film raging bull.if your going to live in new york take this film with you.
After seeing this, it really makes me wonder what the movie could have been had Burton still stayed on board as Director...
(I still love this movie for what it is, BTW)

Comparing this movie to nick and nora is actually pretty bad. This movie is what soho was before retailors moved in and landlords started charging 18 grand a month for rent.
This truly is a piEce of NYC FILM HISTORY

Seems we all saw this movie last week during the night on ITV. The poor guy ends up in a plaster cast dumped outside his work....Dark Comedy.

One of my favorite films ever. A great reflection of the 80s period. Please don't remake it.. i don't want a classic ruined.

i always believed people should remake the bad films that had promise, but not the good films. But it never works that way

the king of comedy and after hours are my favorite scorsese movies not just based on the fact they are both set in my favorite city and are warm inspiring stories and obviously beautiful films, but because these two films from the mid 80's are the most bashed (critically and commercially) films scorsese has made however they were just unfourtunate to fall in the shadow of what many consider too be scorsese's greatest film raging bull.if your going to live in new york take this film with you.
