  • After seeing this, it really makes me wonder what the movie could have been had Burton still stayed on board as Director...

(I still love this movie for what it is, BTW)

  • I think this movie is better than Raging Bull, this is one of my favorite movies of the 80's.

  • this is one of scorseses lesser known movies but i thought it was alright. i know tim burton was gonna direct it but scorsese couldnt make last temptation of christ so he came back and said he'd make it cause he was the original choice and tim burton gladly stepped down

  • I watched it in 2012, and thats just so good, try to listen to it at 3am when your tired, its perfect.

  • great movie

  • who the fuck own a car in new york city? lmao

  • love this movie

  • One of my favorite scenes, when he finally gets to a subway terminal.

"I could go to a party, get drunk, talk to someone, who knows?"

  • Scorsese's visual style is often too kinetic for my tastes. With most of his early films there was a grace and fluency to his style, but from the mid-80's onward it really became overwhelmingly paranoid. Only recently has it mellowed somewhat with films like 'Shutter Island'. 'After Hours' was really the first of Scorsese's paranoid films, and for that I really can't properly appreciate it.

  • UNDERRATED MASTERPICE!...BRILLANT! ORIGINAL!...SCORSESE GENIOUS! HE WAS THE BEST FILMKAER OF THE 70S AND 80S....NOW HE IS DOING INTERESTING THINGS BUT NOT GREAT LIKE IN THE PAST!

  • i thought he was going to stay trapped in a statue and die inside it.....

That would be an awesome ending...

  • too bad this trailer gives all the movie away... if you haven't watch it yet, leave the trailer alone. That way, you'll enjoy the film even more.

  • one of the most underrated movies in history

  • This movie made me glad that I live in an era of mobile phones and ATMs.

  • Maybe the greaaaaaatest movie I've ever seen.

  • @TheNonozor I feel exactly the same, I´ve watched this countless times.........just perfect

  • hahahaa both parents from home alone are in this

  • Thumbs up if this and Bringing out the Dead are the 2 most underrated Scorsese movies ever!

  • @GratefulVince Fuck yes. I just watched this for the first time, and it made me want to watch bringing out the dead.

  • @artonfireonline - Do you like Kundun too or no? Thats another Scorsese film most fans seem to dislike but I enjoy that film a lot too and think its highly underrated

  • @artonfireonline AFTER HOURS IS A TRULLY GREAT FILM UNDERRATED...BUT BRINGING OUT THE DEAD IS ONE OF HIS 4"BAD" MOVIES....IN 22 FILMS SCORSESE HAS MADE ONLY 4 BAD ONES ( BOXCAR BERTHA, NEW YORK NEW YORK, THE COLOR OF MONEY , BRINGING OUT THE DEAD).

  • @Gaston088able Thanks for telling me what I like.

  • @artonfireonline why so sensitive?....it is wrong what i wrote to you?...nobody is telling what you have to do or not!, it was a recomendation!....thanks for being such an IDIOT!

  • People in New York are probably more dependent on public transportation than any other part of the world, retard. Something you don't know because you've never left your village. Just keep shagging sheep in your Austalian craphole.

  • This movie is a masterpiece!!!

  • This looks embarrassingly bad. Very dated, cliche'd, and the acting is just awful. I can't believe the attention this silly thing gets.

  • @konzwambii This is a fantastic movie—frightening and completely hilarious. The whole problem is that it DOESN'T get any attention. I had to stumble upon it.

  • @konzwambii it´s just the 1980´s......this will never ever come back

  • I love this film so much. What films are similar to this one?

  • @Hypnotoad27 If you're looking for a similarly nightmarish adventure try "Frantic" with Harrison Ford. It's not surreal like After Hours but it'll make you uneasy in a way that's reminiscent of Scorcese's work here.

  • When i basicly accidently saw this movie on TV i was blown away... it's absolutely awesome, it kinda reminds me of Seinfeld, how everything comes together in the end... brilliant movie.

  • This is the problem with frustration comedies.

You kinda hafta show the unfolding events in the Trailer, or know one will want to see it. But after you watch the trailer - its kinda not too surprising.

  • Just about one of the best unknown movies ever!!

  • this trailer just spoiled 75% of the film.

  • ovverated all films by martin are anyways so no suprise

  • such an underrated film... never got the credit it deserved... has an amazing catastrophic feel to it and dunne's acting is out of this world

  • @saberbazer This is totally a funny movie. It's dark and frightening and disorienting and heartwrenching and gutwrenching, but I still laughed all through it.

  • Glad I watched the movie before I watched the trailer.

  • @demonman212 lol it gives EVERYTHING away, lmao.

  • And that's why every man should own a car.

  • @bakibol everyman does own a car. you cant call yourself a man if u have to get around on your skateboard

  • @walkintall29

    Not in SoHo, obviously.

  • @bakibol yes in SoHo too dickhead

  • Everytime I get lost at night it feels like I'm living this movie.

  • @kevinsmellls LOL!

  • Well-Kevin-McCallister's-parents-certainly-did-some-crazy-stuff-back-in-the-day.

  • @FREAKSmoviereviews

Actually you are wrong-they only spoiled 84.789% of the movie.

  • after hours is the most underrated movie ever

  • @zikobeetlejuice agreed

  • Makes me want to go back to NYC - the NYC of thirty years ago.

  • the story of my life

  • Great great movie. I give it a 7.7/10 but my scales are harsh lol. I only give Cuckoo's Nest a 8.8/10

  • @Justdaman411 I aggre. Cuckoo's Nest is little bit to chauvinistic.

  • @Justdaman411 haha harsh and precise.

  • Still my favorite movie after 25 years. I saw it in a theater in New Zealand!

  • Amazing movie, fucking awful trailer!!

  • @FREAKSmoviereviews out of curiousity whats makes this trailer awful??, scorsese's trailer's tend to be far different than the actual movie.

  • @Cobretti20001 Do they also tend to spoil 85% of the movie?

  • veeeery good movie

  • i like that guy in 40 days and 40 nights haha

  • Within the first 15 minutes of watching the film, it was instantly added to my favourite films list. So good, but none of my friends appreciate it's beauty! Oh well, their loss! haha

  • phhhhhhhsh, this trailer give away the entire film.

  • A great underrated classic

  • LOL this reminds me to thw warriors but in single !

  • i love griffin dunne.

  • I used to like this motion picture a lot when I was a child but back then I never noticed what a pretentious shit the main character is.

  • I remember seeing this on tv late on night in 1993. Haven't seen it since.

  • I remember when Griffin Dunne was in a movie with Madonna. At the time, a luck shpit. I remember when he had to marry this woman who had a father who created a book with like a thousand marriage rules. lol Oh yeah it was "Who's that girl?". This movie was strange. The movie was set up nice though: A really bad night waiting to happen so that he would end up right where he began. lol

  • sad Griff died in that horrible car accident

  • @NYKID10014 Griffin Dunne is still alive.

  • Does anybody know a similar movie? Not as good as this but the same style...?

  • @rojinio Well, they're not exactly similar but I'd say the short of Scorsese in "New York Stories" is worth the viewing and "Living in Oblivion" is also "similair" because it's another crazy little great story like this one! Plus it's very funny

  • @rojinio three oclock high

    same poster

  • it's amazing how i was actually searching for after hours by velvet underground and i stumbled upon this and it looks great.

  • acho q tou a fim de ver esse filme d novo, mas se vc jah assistiu nao ve esse trailer q conta tudo antes, eh estupido e o filme eh bom pracarai! comedia supense tragicomico

  • One of Scorsese's greatest movies. It explodes with energy, and it is genuinely very very funny.

  • one of the best "little movie" ever.

    and better than most blockbusters

  • this is one of my favourite movies ever

  • if i were 2 choose a scorsese flick, it would be this one!

  • I was a musician living in L.A. when this came out and my roommate was an actor. He came home one night all excited and said we HAVE to go see this movie, so we scraped together all the loose change we could find in the apartment and we had just enough for two tickets. It made the whole experience that much sweeter, because we were poor but we were happy and it was a truly great and unique film.

  • @owlcu That's a really awesome experience. I'd guess from the quality of this film that the experience was well worth it.

  • @shmutzman Yeah, this movie opened my eyes to what a director can do when he's just having fun. I've read that Scorcese made this after a nightmare experience with another film (a religious epic), and he was worried that he may not be taken seriously in Hollywood again. So he just let it fly and said screw it, I'm doing what feels right. My former roommate does mostly plays now, but he managed a decent role in Field of Dreams, as Costner's flashback dad playing catch with him in a cornfield.

  • This movie is so atmospheric - New York shot beautifully at night with a wild story!

  • This movie is in my top 20 favorite films. GREAT MOVIE!!

whenever i think that life can't get any worse, i think about this poor guy =]

  • This is an EXCELLENT movie. I love this!

  • Wow I didn't know back in the 80s people actually made living being some word processor for a company lol. I wonder if they got payed well considering computers wee not even close of being high tech!

  • ...this is one hell of a movie!......I can't recommend it enough.....sort of an updated Wizard of Oz.....Paul just can't seem to get back home......no flying monkeys....but crazy Mr Softy vendor, local artists and Miss Beehive 1960......oh boy! and don't start me off about that classic soundtrack........a shore thing.....

  • This is not a comedy.

  • It's a black comedy. So the comedy isn't really a "funny" comedy.

  • djakinik, this movie is meant to be a comedy

  • @MikaelLilienthal I want to see it even more now.

  • @shmutzman

it's in my top 3 favorite movies of all time :)

definitely get a hold of it sometime i can't recommend it enough

  • @MikaelLilienthal I finally saw "After Hours" this week. It's now one of my favorite movies I've ever seen. Thanks for the recommendation! :D

  • Can't believe Martin Scorsese made a comedy.

  • He made the king of comedy as well. Both are dark comedies, which makes sense considering Scorcese's trademarks. No way would he direct "candy comedies"

  • I clearly remember my 1st experience of this movie. 1986 portable 16" B&W TV in my bedroom, changed the channel & watched what was on, an hour later still watching, totally gripped. That's only ever happend to me on 1 other movie. I loved this movie, there is a new & unexpected surprise around every corner, I love it, love it, love it, still one of my favourite movies.

  • movie scared me more than it made me laugh.

  • You might find this video a @ MOOV ZON, COM search the above link on google

  • if it is comedy well then it is a really bad one then...I didn't think of it as a comedy, it is very good movie though 3/5 for me

  • This film reminded me of a mix of 'The Tenant' by Roman Polanski and 'After Dark' by Haruki Murakami, with a strong comedy touch to it. Awesome.

  • awesome!

  • Man this is such a great movie!!

  • everyone has to see this! it's just crazy!

  • Looks awesome, can't believe I had to stumble upon this myself and it wasn't thrust into my face by the history books.

  • @Clivepom - Because like most classics, these films are practically a secret !

  • great film...was gripped from start to finish..like...crazy story,

  • This movie reminded me a lot of a David Lynch movie. I guess it's because of all the crazy people in it.

  • i didnt think of it as a comedy, althought it was very dark

  • it is my favorite movie!

  • More people should know about this underated film. Its a little weird, but fantastic.

  • Classic Urban nightmare for the ordinary joe.....

  • one of the best movies ever ;)

  • this is the second worst trailer ever made. It's the WHOLE movie cut down to 2 minutes. the only one worse is The Deer Hunter.

  • You're right. Yet, all this trailer does is get me to want to watch the film again. Most underrated Scorsese picture. Ever.

  • 1. After Hours

    2. King of Comedy

    3. Raging Bull

    Martin Scorsese top 3

  • Funny Movie!

  • 95% of modern directors would kill to have this film on their cv. For Scorcese it's barely even mentioned lol.

  • ;D Good point. Scorsese is wayyy ahead of anyone in business today.

  • exactly. he makes a perfect example of how a light hearted film should be handled. one of his best works and a perfect example of him at his top directorial form as well.

  • That's such a good point. I had only heard of this film a couple years ago, it's a classic.

  • boggles my mind how this is so rarely mentioned by people that talk about scorsese's masterworks -- its clearly brilliant.

  • Odd, I have always thought as well. Saw it over 10 years ago and to this day recall it.

  • It's Jack Goodman. From American Werewolf In London this time he's more perfect instead of being a walking corspe.

  • This is my favorite Scorsese picture; mainly because it is so underrated.

  • Movie is in my top ten...fuckin hilarious. That was a horrible editing job for the trailer. But I was ten when this movie came out.

  • The trailer is great, but unfortuantely it gaves away so many of the great surprises in this movie.

  • shit trailer. Spoiled the whole movie.

  • well, fuck me... the ruiners have struck again, ive never seen it, and im always careful not to ruin movies for people, but this movies very own trailer went ahead and did it... thank you marketers who slice and dice for baby, think we all have 1 minute attention spans and in essence create all the 1 minute attention spans by the deeds you carry out in the first place!

  • The trailer may have ruined some plot points, but it's the execution of them in the narrative that is masterful. If you know Scorsese, you know what I mean. YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE!

  • good movie

  • how can I get the original score music by howard shore? I don't find it!

  • it took me for ever to remember this film, and after many many atempts of typing things into google tht i remember from the film, along comes wikipedia with a list of films set in new york, Oh and I really enjoyed this film,

  • u need to watch 2 times this movie

after the first time u can see better the intentions and why this is happening

u see this movie last night

and almost piss on my pants

the guy is a completed idiot

  • Hilarious!

  • I saw this film many moons ago, probably about 1993 late at night. Missed the first 20 minutes or so, but was totally hooked - by the end of the film I thought 'what a cool movie!', but never knew the title! That is until last night - just caught the last 15 minutes but now at least I know what it is called!

Totally one of my all-time favourite movies, been waiting to see this again all these years, so I managed to locate a region 2 DVD this morning! Can't wait to see it again!!!

  • I watched it on ITV one late night a few days ago, wheres the DVD you found, I only saw a Region 1 dvd

  • watched this last night - LOVED it!

had never even heard of it before, but now deffo one of my favourites :)

  • this is one of my favorite movies

  • Strange movie with Rosanna Arquette

  • I love this film.

  • my favourite movie of all time

  • My favourite movie of all time

  • Griffin Dunne - This is an excellent actor. i think most people say brad pitt and tom cruise are good actors cause they are pretty... they're shit compared to this great performance by dunne

  • Absolutely! I loved him in this and in American Werewolf in London.

  • fuck those pieces of shit asshole fuckrats, griffin dunne's the best.

  • I just watched it

    It's great

  • Pure Mayhem and Panic....I do love my cell phone now, he he.

  • I am getting this movie on DVD soon. I hear that its underrated, is that true?

  • yeah it's really underrated,it's a great movie

  • i love this movie! its really scary though because nothing is supernatural or unrealistic. it could REALLY happen.

  • great great movie.

It stands out among american movies.-

  • i just watched this. haha it was crazy

  • This is just a fantastic film. A great, weird story and some great acting..

  • I liked it!

  • Do you know where I can see this film online...FOR FREE

  • Netflix has this movie on Instant Watch.

  • Comparing this movie to nick and nora is actually pretty bad. This movie is what soho was before retailors moved in and landlords started charging 18 grand a month for rent.

This truly is a piEce of NYC FILM HISTORY

  • Heh. Seems funny AND it's from the 80's! I think I will Netflix it right now.

  • i haven't seen this movie but i read a comparason of this movie to nick and nora's. i think i'm going to rent it. it looks funny

  • Seems we all saw this movie last week during the night on ITV. The poor guy ends up in a plaster cast dumped outside his work....Dark Comedy.

  • I saw this movie last week on TV and Griffen Dune is Absolute Master Class as the ordinary nice guy mixed up with the Down Town New York Wierdos that come out at night. Classic Scorsese urban nightmare.....

  • This was on TV last night and forgotten how good it was. Recognised so many people. A true 80's classic and I've had nights like that. It makes me love my mobile phone...

  • so did i, i never saw it before but when i turned over i couldnt change the channel i was totally swept up in the plot. its rare for a film to do that

  • I feel like I stepped into a dream after I woke up from a coma after overdosing on acid...love this movie

  • CooL Movie!

  • One of my favorite films ever. A great reflection of the 80s period. Please don't remake it.. i don't want a classic ruined.

  • i always believed people should remake the bad films that had promise, but not the good films. But it never works that way

  • the king of comedy and after hours are my favorite scorsese movies not just based on the fact they are both set in my favorite city and are warm inspiring stories and obviously beautiful films, but because these two films from the mid 80's are the most bashed (critically and commercially) films scorsese has made however they were just unfourtunate to fall in the shadow of what many consider too be scorsese's greatest film raging bull.if your going to live in new york take this film with you.
