I have the next model Peugeot up (all Reynolds 531, full chrome fork) that I bought new in 1980. Thinking hard about single-speed since my pseudo-racer days are over. Curious why you needed a spacer on the drive side? Plus, there doesn't appear to be all that much axle left for the dropout--is the wheel held on with just the quick release? You have bigger balls than I to take a grinder to the frame. Nice job all around. De gustibus non est disputandum. Cheers!

i have a peugeot also which i am currently riding fixed gear, i want to switch out the crankset but i havent been able to figure out the bottom bracket,it is french threaded correct?and is the bb you the original stock one?
Mk thank you for that much appreciated info. Im lookin into buyin a beat old road bike and makin it a single speed :) ill keep you in mind if i have questions. Im in the orange county area btw
@420TheMega Yes. A single speed has a free wheel and it keeps spinning if you stop peddling and is much safer. Hipsters feel that a fixed gear is much cooler and much better but a fixed gear is much more dangerous and should only be used by experienced riders.
Damn you guys made that bike look dope..Damn if you lived in chicago i would pay you 300 just to customized mine, but you probably live in Florida or Cali by looking at the the tree's....But Good job...
@sunndrac Peugeot used to be very popular in the late 70's and early 80's. You can still pick them up cheap. I just wanted to show that you can take a throw-away bike and make it useful and more importantly beautiful.
Awesome work! I've got a number of bikes - alu and carbon- and nothing rides quite like older steel bikes. For the money spent on a new road bike, I could've had a killer restored bike with quality components. I'm building up my own Peugeot Vitus now
@rastablader Yes the chain needs routine oiling. I use White Lightning....it is wax based. The chain always stays nice and white with routing cleaning.
Personally I think it is just a waste of time and impractible ot take off the cable guides and derailleur hanger. What happens if one day you want gears on it? ie you are screwed then...
@persian209 There are many ways to start. I suggest using as much of the original as you can. This will keep your cost down. I used parts from other bikes as well. I save everything and found uses for old bike parts. You don't need to powder coat. You can simply sand and spray paint and that too will keep your cost down.
You can't fail to be impressed by this. Such a simple pleasure in life. Creating something unique and special and completely practical from something which would otherwise end up in the parts bin yard. Good work.
I have a 70's Schwinn that I have converted to SS. I have had a problem with the back wheel slipping on me and causing the tire to run into the frame. Do I just need to tighten the heck out of this thing or is there another problem that Im not seeing?
@savageknives1 I have been working on converting an old sears road bike to a SS and I had the same problem. Have you replaced the sprockets with new single speed sprockets or are you just using one speed of the original sprockets?
@sethajase Dude the bike was salvaged from a trash can.....your heart has got to be a bit stronger than that. We made something beautiful out of trash.........No matter what we did you would have fond something to criticize.
@brydon10 I agree. When we build our next one we will. We did not do this to be in the cool crowd, we just wanted to prove that it can be done, done well, done cheaply. The whole fixie trendy thing was purposefully avoided.
@simondr70 Yes I agree on the white fork. Our intention was to keep it original and cheap. I just don't understand 1000 + bike rebuilds. My next one will have a white fork. I did swap out the black seat for a white one and changed the pedals. Spent about 15.00 on some used track pedals and 10.00 for a used white seat. Still riding the bike and still love it.
@HalSka8 yes you can, measure the length of the crank arms,if they are long enough, you can just swap out the whole set up.if not, look where the crank ring and the axel for the crank arms meet up.you will see the male seat for the bottom bracket bearings. it is slotted so it can be removed. take this off and swap out crank rings.now the important part, when you get the rear cog,it has to match the crank ring(meaning made for bmx sized chains).try 16 or 17 tooth for the rear cog.
i found a veryy old cinelli about 2 months agoo, took it home then realised i had no tools to really do anything substantial to it, sold it for 50$ to some indie hipster 2 weeks later see him riding around his 4000$ cinelli frame and with his cool little aerospokes and the only thing he used from the bike was the seat that was on the old cinelli....... i wondered why he bought the whole bike when he only used the seat. deep down inside i cried
That is beautiful. I've got a Gitan out in the gardening shed I keep threatening to rebuild, but haven't yet. Maybe I'll go look at it tomorrow. Thanks for showing it. Great job, everyone.
Much respect to you guys building it up. I used to have a puegot carbolite 103 frame, good frame, outlasted many new frames on the market.

Are Peugeot bicycles popular in USA ? Cause in France they are pretty common and people tend to throw them away or sell them for cheap.
