u can look at smoke to know when to change gear; when smoke reduces, governor is slowing stuff down, time to change gear, cool!

When the smoke begins to clear the turbo is spooling, he is not getting on it hard enough to spool the turbo in every gear, as per all the smoke through all the gears. If you lo only at a drag truck, they only smoke off the line because after that they make enough boost that it clears up the smoke, NO2 helps too.

Whether VW or Cummins, excess smoke is wasted power. Obviously, an older Cummins will smoke until boost builds up. But the newer ones can be tuned to keep the smoke down and make use of the fuel that is being fed to them. The comment I made was not so much in relation to this video, but others.

I do know plenty about diesels, I've been around them and worked on them my whole life. Farm tractors, big power pulling tractors, semis and my little VW.

No worries...I'm not one of those guys. If I had the money and wasn't commuting 160 miles a day, I'd be driving a 2003 Ram 2500 Cummins 4x4, with 6 speed, stacks, exhaust brake, twins and whatever else I could afford to put on there.

For now...hard to beat 50 mpg out of this little VW.
