In my point of view Vince made it look like it was a storyline, With Bret obviously signing for WCW. Listen to this closely, If WCW wanted to capitalise on this angle, Which looked real, wouldn't they have debuted him sooner? My point is, Bret was still under contract and they had him sit out like many talents in WWF and they were coming up with a scenario for bret's return. Then the rest is history, Damn how obvious is it to have JR interview the owner about supposed candid things.
The screwjob was totally real.. there are still people who think it was part of the show. Fuck no it wasn't..Bret clocked Vince like a bitch.. broke bones in his hand and Vince had to be carried out of the locker room like Opie from Maybury.
Yup correct, this was certainly not scripted. (HBK might have known whatever info he knew at the time), but it was never scripted. And I mean c'mon, for gods sake Bret...if Vince McMahon didn't make wise business decisions to protect his business, and I must stress, this is BUSINESS today, that is why you were getting paid stupid amounts of money Bret. If Vince didn't make all the big decisions like this, then we would not have WWE today. It is that simple. Every1 knows it happened thats it

@peterj10880 it was not scripted... the new dvd released a week or 2 ago ...wwe greatest rivalries shawn vs bret.... they both are interviewed by jim ross... and they both cry about it while they are talking about this incident.. shawn says it is something he could never forget because he knew about this screwjob all the time
I would say brett got the greatest deal of all time,9 million 4 3 years,or 3 million 4 125 days a year, fuck id sell out 4 that money, brett was only making $750.000.000 a year and he was on the road 300 days a year in the wwF i will say it again,id sell out 4 the money............
@sexymodels5 not those girls he didnt read his book and u will find out the REAL TRUTH just dont sit there and say bullshit lies learn ur facts b4 u run him through the mud
He didn't read his book? I think you mean I need to read his book-I did thanks & it is tremendous. Bret is a self confessed multiple adulterer if you actually read his book.
As i watch and learned from the events that lead to this issue. The company almost went into liquidation in 1997 as they were almost knocked out by WCW Monday Nitro. The Alundra Blayze incident that she dumped the belt into a trash can resulted in the paranoia of WWE at that time.
Vince had a hard choice to make and cannot afford to choke on it. It saved the company in the end with the introduction of the Attitude Era.
Vince also said(can't remember exactly when) that if he had let Bret win, that he was afraid of Bischoff going on Nitro and gloating about how they had signed the wwf champion. I can't blame him for that, especially considering the way Bischoff slammed WWF before on nitro.
Funny how they ask Vince if he was disappointed about Bret spitting in the his face and breaking the TV equipment. His answer was, "I'm disappointed that he hit me."
@tottiballbag10 it was designed to look like a work, this interview was a work, etc. There would've been no need at the time to make a "screwjob" match when it was already the most anticipated match in wrestling history, real heat made it sell, they didn't need to make that up. Looking back after 15 years its easy to see how much damage this did to the wrestling entertainment business. Vince would never have broke kafabe and ruined his own business to make a quick buck. He's not that stupid.
@violinsofangels are you backwards or something? this was more likely a work which was made to look like a shoot to get people talking about wwe and gain heat for vince mcmahon and shawn michaels. in 97 wcw was killing wwe and bret wanted to leave so instead of just letting bret leave and lettin his business go under, vince decided to create some controversy around his product and get some serious heat at the same time. this was the beginning of the "mr mcmahon" character.
@violinsofangels and your wrong in saying it was made to look like a work. and that it did damage to the wrestling industry. and that vince mcmahon never breaks kayfabe...
@violinsofangels and what do you mean "how much damage this did to the wrestling business" this was the biggest thing to ever happen in wrestling. this completely changed the business and began wwe's rise to beating wcw in the ratings war because of the heat gained by vince mcmahon after this happened. vince still breaks kayfabe to make money today. just look at cm punks worked shoot promo a few weeks ago. and the buzz this created around the money in the bank ppv
@tottiballbag10 you're a moron it wasn't a work bret threatened to kill his own sister because british bulldog ent back to wwe after what vince did to him.
@oldschool6804 i didnt get my point across very well in what i wrote a month ago. i dont think montreal WAS definateley a work. my point was, how crazy would it be if we found out today that they had been working us this whole time and even bret was told to kayfabe it. obviously i dont think it was a work (im not a moron). it was more of a "what if" retoricle comment. made around the same time of punks worked shoot promo weeks ago. when all the internet marks were buying into it as a shoot.
The wording J.R. and McMahon use to talk about the Montreal Screwjob is brilliant. They never flat out say that wrestling is scripted and there were always people (including myself) who weren't quite sure where the line between reality and theatre in wrestling was in these days. In reality, Bret wouldn't job and a lot of the support Bret got (and the heat Vince caught) for this incident was based solely on that fact. Now, wrestling fans are always complaining about Cena NOT jobbing.
its funny that JR is the one asking if mcmahon screwed bret hart, when JR was in the hotel along with HBK,HHH Sg.slaughter and mcmahon when they planned it out to screw him
Why did it happen? Medusa dumped the WWF Women's title in a trash can when she went to WCW about two years prior to the Screwjob, Vince was shit scared that Bret would do the same with the WWF title.
If this was all a work (and I'm not saying it was or wasn't, but many on the internet say it was) then this interview proves that Vince McMahon is one of the greatest performers ever in professional wrestling.
@countrybill45 it was real documentaries were made and shawn book was made vince took so long 2 put him in hof so many things u should know by now just look it up dude
Love or hate Vince McMahon,he did what any business owner would do.He was morally wrong, but moral judgment rarely if ever factors in to business decisions.
This was the official birth of the "Mr. McMahon" character.Although Vince was somewhat talking in character here and contradicting himself from offscreen,he was right about most of what he said.Mind you,Vince knew he could milk Bret's less than ceremonious departure from WWF for everything it was worth in terms of ratings.
that tradition he is speaking of, is it the tradition where the person leaving wwe has to put other guys over, losing a bunch of matches in order to help the other guys that will stay in the organization etc...
wtf u all talk about? Bret just don´t wanted to drop the titel to the selffish HBK, he always wanted to dropt it to undertaker or stone cold! Bret got really fucked by vince. And watching this shit interview I just feel angry enough to beat the fuck out of vince!
He was so loyal (bret) to the company, for decades! And wha the got? a fucking screwjob! YOu all must know that Bret´s life was only about wrestling, so its like a monk is getting sent to hell by the other monks...stupid buis!
@wikki11 The only thing I can say is that Bret worked FOR Vince McMahon not with. So final decision of who takes the title isn't up to him, sure he can bring up an offer to Vince but in the end Vince makes final call on the situation. Vince AND Bret could've worked this situation out fo much more better from both sides, Vince is more wrong then Bret in many aspects for the fans but for business perspective Bret was more wrong then Vince was.
@tacospartan This was as real as the wwe got. there were only 3 people that had knowledge of what was going to happen besides vince, and that was the referee of the match, shawn michaels, and either Pat Patterson or Gerald Brisco. No one else had any clue what was going to happen.
@tacospartan It was a real screwjob as Bret Hart was originally suppose to beat Shawn Michaels and then vacate the WWF World Title afterwards, but Vince McMahon double-crossed him.
Everyone you can say Vince screwed Bret but reality Vince was being a business man, Bret refused to give the title away and he was leaving the company with the wwf title, so Vince had to be the business man and step up, Bret screwed himself on this, i like hart but he couldn't even sit down and talk to McMahon about the situation instead he punched him and gave him and gave him a sprained ankle.
@999grime There is much more to it. Bret Hart did so much for WWF. Vince signed him to a 20 year contract but later told him he can sign with WCW because he won't be needed in the attitude era.
@imercana bullshit in my eyes, it was a storyline plus Bret was signing to WCW, it is so stupid to complain ... its like playing cops and robbers and complaining because someone shoots you with a toy gun, I just can't comprehend a grown man complaining because someone altered a scripted event, its stupid, everyone knows it was entertainment based and not real, so Bret not winning the title because of a last minute decision (a great decision) is pretty immature, the "controversy" was brilliant
@imercana oh, well shit. Didn't know that, makes sense, and I still feel for Bret as a professional. Either way, none of these guys are the Undertaker haha
You know, all emotions aside, I understand Vince. He got him a deal that set him up for life, working half the days he did in the WWF on a 40-year-old body that was breaking down. Why would Bret Hart be so pissed off?
I understand the betrayal, but had he been less stubborn, he could've used this positively - just like Vince McMahon did! He went public and became a billionaire! What did Bret do? Turn bitter, get injured and get a stroke.
Positivity, opportunity and optimism > bitterness.
@ph1484 Bret was asked by wcw 2 b wit them for 3yrs 9mil or stay with WWF for 20 years. Bret then signed with WWF Bret wanted to be loyal, vince wanted 2 turn Bret bad cause the good was getting old. Bret said yes. Bret is now bad. Then Stone cold was bad but ppl liked him being bad. Now bret is bad but the character is boring. Vince then wanted out of the 20yr contract and wanted bret 2 go 2 wcw, it was costing Vince 2 much 2 keep him on. It was tuf 4 bret but he said ok. and signed with wcw
@speedracer234 Then Vince leaked out to the media that bret was leaving for the money when it was his idea in the first place. Bret didn't like the direction WWF was going because they were trying to sell sex and it wasn't appropriate for kids and went public by saying this. Vince didn't like it. Read an auto biography people and then you'll learn a thing or two. Jeez.....
POINT BLANK VINCE WAZ WRONG!!! I WAS YOUNG WHEN I WATCHED THIS AND KNEW SUMTHING WAZ WRONG WHEN IT WAZ HAPPENING..VINCE WAZ WRONG NO MATTER WHY HE DID IT...
VINCE WAS SO WRONG FOR FUCKING BRET OVER! HE KNEW WHAT HE DID WAS WRONG. AND IF YALL WATCH THE HITMAN MOVIE, BRET WAS WEARING A WIRE WHEN VINCE SAID BRET CAN GO OUT ANY WAY HE WANTED TO. PLUS IF IT WAS HIS LAST MATCH, WHY NOT LET HIM GO OUT ON TOP, ESPECIALLY BY HIM BEING IN HIS HOMETOWN! YEA THIS IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT, BUT VINCE WAS SO WRONG.
@gazz12345a It wasn't a work, it actually happened. Bret had no idea the match was going to end the way it did. He was told it was going to end one way, and it ended up ending a completely different way. This incident caused the pro wrestling industry to be irrevocibly exposed. It's something no pro wrestling promotion wants to do, but for Vince McMahon, he had no choice but to do what he had to do. Bret didn't want to cooperate, so Vince made sure Bret lost the belt by any means neccessary.
this was the first time vince went into his mr mcmahon character. he knew he screwed bret but everyone hated him when he did that. he knew he couldn't do anything about that. so he went with it. he turned the crowd against him even more. rating grew. all in all vince did just for rating and controversy.
His Contract With WCW was at that time he was the highest paid pro wrestler ever
3 million a year over 3 years. But his Character was just ruined they treated him like a joke. Almost 2 years befor he finally landed the world title for the first time.
on the monday night war dvd it is revealed that this was vince as his mr. mcmahon character. vince knew he screwed bret and did it to piss off wrestling fans. it was both a shitty and a good idea. it helped wwe in ratings.
So maybe Bret did not honor time honored tradition of putting over other wrestlers on his way out. But Shawn Michaels honored NONE of his commitments; why should Bret Hart have done likewise for Shawn?
This was the moment professional wrestling changed forever. It was the beginning of open admittance on the part of the wwf that wrestling was not a legitimate sport. There was no other way around it. Watch the promos and interviews up until 1997, they treated wrestling as a sport not as entertainment. The montreal screwjob and the whole debacle surrounding it changed the industry irrevocably. Although they had admitted in court prior to this that wrestling was not a true sport, this changed it.
@bpatrice49 Yeah it sucks after Bret left! Bret's time in the WWF was more of sport with a little entertainment(Bret losing to yokuzona) to "MAKE" guys! After Bret was gone it was more of Satanic storylines and entertainment!
2:02 - 2:25, he could've directed that to Shawn Michaels instead LOL. My god he REFUSED to job. If I said to someone that I would job for them then they turn around and say, "i wouldn't do the same for you", you can be damn sure I wouldn't job then.
"brett hart screwed brett hart, and he can look in the mirror and know that" hahahahahaha, so he's basically jackin off to himself in front of a mirror is what he's sayin
McMahon may be somewhat of a bastard but he made the right call here, He had no choice after what Madusa did to the Women's Title during WCW.
Imagine if Hart showed up at WCW with the WWF Title and trashed it, even if Bret had no intention of doing so. in a business you have to make cold, hard decisions.
Vince didn't have the luxury of humoring Bret's bullsh*t sentimentality... especially when Bret (and his fans-a-like) play the virtuous angle when Bret showed NO loyalty to the WWF.
@Midwaytyrant Thats bullshit. Bret still had a month left on his deal AFTER the Survivor Series. and Vince knew Bret well enough that Bret wouldn't of shown up in WCW with the belt. It was nothing like the Madusa/WCW deal in '95...it's only an excuse for people who are you Pro-McMahon/Michaels.
Bret showed loyalty by fucking going back to a company that was in the shitter in '96...by turning down a deal by WCW which would've PAID him much, much more money. you're full of shit kid.
@1981bigdee I agree. People forget that unless you run your own business, your needs do NOT come first - the needs of the business does. Whether you like the manager or don't like him, the business comes first.
I certainly feel sympathy for Bret, in that he didn't want to drop the belt in his own country, to a person he hated. That's tough and I will always feel for him that way.
That being said, he didn't drop the belt when the business asked him to. That is just point blank, plain and simple.
Well i heard the other wrestler who were at the same time as bret used to say he had a big ego... i like bret but he is no saint as his fans believe!!
considering what alundra blayze did with womens title in wcw i think what vince did as a business man was needed!! he panicked bret would do the same thing !!
don't yell at me, but what Vince is saying is true - Bret did screw Bret.
he was going to walk out of WWE to WCW and refused to loose the WWE championship. of course, vince didn't want Bret to walk away with the belt, so they went bhind his back to make bret loose. shawn didn't even know until just before the match.
it wasn't tha fact of the whole 'making bret loose' is was the way that Bret acted that made him mess it all up for himself. i was against vince for it, but then i did the research.
I will always point to this; Vince had no problem hiring Ric Flair when he was the recognised WCW?NWA World Champion, he had no problem hiring Meng when he was the WCW hardcore champion.
The 'time honored' tradition is only acceptable when it goes in Vince's favor. Simple.
As I've gotten older, it's been easier for me to see Vince's side of things. This isn't about personal glory, it was about business. This was at the HEIGHT of the Monday night wars, and while Vince still could've done this MUCH better, he did what ultimately was right for the business of the WWF.
When Ric Flair first came to the WWF he was carrying around the NWA belt. I find it disingenuous for Vince McMahon to talk about time-honored traditions, when he's broken all of them.
brett screwed brett. theres no way ur gunna leave any wrestling company as champion and think ur jus gunna forfeit the title and leave on top. any other champion had to drop the title and pass the torch to leave so idk y brett thought he was so special like the same rules didnt apply to him. dont get me wrong i really liked brett bt hes not above the ethics of the company
what vince mcmahon is saying is not like what bret hart said in his book. bret said that vince WANTED to go against him. that whole "Bret screwed Bret" is just lies. in Bret's book, if he stayed, vince wanted him to lose to Micheals for 2 months, then at the Royal Rumble, he would say that if he didn't win, he would leave, and he was going to lose. so which ever way, 1997-1998 was going to be his last year.
survivor series, the montreal canadian fans actually yelled out that bret sold out at one occation before the whole screwjob. bret may of disagreed with some of the things that wwf was making him do, but he never disagreed to be a heel. he knew it was the time to change, because he can't always be the hero forever. and the thing with the "spoiled kids" i think he was just talking as his character, he doesn't dislike the american fans, his mom's an american.
i have to disagree, first, WCW didn't use him to his best ability both bret, eric bishof, as well as vince stated that. however one thing that i forgot to mention was that in the DVD bret mentioned how no one knew that he was leaving WWF except for him and the WWF, but vince or someone supposedly hinted that bret sold out, which he never did. i think that probably effected his character a lot, because now u have not only americans calling him a sell out, but also canadians. in fact on ...
2) then shawn turned heel leaving bret with nothing. cuz now he's not the greatest babyface, and he isn't the greatest heel. he has nothing.
he would hav lost (may be not all) but some of his fan base. his character would of just been boring if he's not a heel, if he's not a babyface, and if he was a looser in his own home town!
@kevfanbsb I disagree. I'm admittedly pretty anti-Bret Hart when it comes to Montreal. But he was AWESOME in his role as an anti-American heel. I believe it was his best mic work, and it gave his character an edge that was missing from his stale hero character.
Bret never wanted to be a heel period, nor did he want to change with the times. He wanted to keep doing the same thing he'd been doing for years. In his DVD & in Wrestling with Shadows, you can hear some of his bitterness towards......
.......American fans. He mentioned he didn't like getting booed in wrestling with shadows, and called American fans "spoiled kids" in his WWE dvd.
He would be a hero in Canada no matter what happened. One job wouldn't kill his career. Doing a job has never killed ANYONE's career.
Going back his anti-American angle, he had this awesome character. But he dropped it (along with all his momentum) in WCW bc he wanted to be a good guy again.
i understand bret's point of view. if bret had lost in Canada, his whole character would of gone down the toilet. his character as a canadian hero would of been done, and he wouldn't hav enough of a fan base. think about it
1) vince dragged the hitman character to racial conflict (first it was racism against the demolition, then it was a canada vs. usa thing.) bret became a heel and ppl didn't follow him anymore.
i really wish vince would have been at bret's place. hopefully he would have realized what screwing a person means who devoted everything to the business. If he expected bret to talk out, even he could have done the same.
In short..vince still sucks after all his explainations
why would vince put over a guy who was leaving for WCW.. even if he handed the title over on RAW IS WAR (under no conractual agreenment to do so) that would only show he was so good no one could beat him. the whole ordeal simply shows that bret was as full of himself if not more than shawn was.
Supposedly during the day after the Screwjob leading up to Raw that night, Vince was panicking and wanted to sweep this incident under the rug. It was Russo that apparently convinced McMahon that this unfortunate incident needs to be talked about and even exploited to take the company and the business to new heights. It was here that the WWE started incorporating 'worked shoots' into their shows than ever before, even though the seeds were being planted in late '96, this kicked it into high gear
Bret screwed Bret. Look at it this way. I once worked for Mcdonalds (yes, i did. LMAO) my job was to work the till's and cook. But 1 day the cleaner from the front floor was off sick, so, because i was the new guy McD's saw fit to make that my duty ALL day. After an hour i decided to walk off shift because i thought they was taking the piss and that wasn't my duty. I got fired the very next day.
Now I'm i right in thinking i was in the right? i screwed myself. I didnt do what my boss told me 2
Bret screwed Bret in my book. Wrestlers forget the WWE it's a JOB and Vince is your boss. If the boss wants you to do something, YOU DO IT! or you're fired. In this case SCREWED and Bret did it to himself. A lot of people say Vince screwed him bla bla but those people are looking at it from a fan stand point when the WWF/E is a BUSINESS. You have to look at it from the business stand point.
@johnissoevil Bret deep down aint made peace with anybody, the only reason he came back was because WWE got scared as hell when they heard Hogan was going to TNA, they paid Bret a shit load of money and still are.
Vince, Bret and Shawn all made an agreement on how this was supposed to go and Vince went back on his word, the man has no honor, just look at what he did to the old WCW and ECW stars coming to work for him and what he did to the Legacy of ECW
@Tajier56 I honestly think that Vince only took advantage of the publicity later. Doing this simply to start an angle had such a huge potential to backfire, and it did. But when Austin became the unquestioned face, Vince was the perfect man for the unquestioned heel.
this is bullshit..you got a guy that works for Vince asking Vince questions..all staged in my mind..lol..guess thats why J.R is as high in the co. as he is...lmao..what a joke
how the hell could vince have the balls to say that bret hart was selfish, but this what i don't understand, he said he didn't want bret to go to WCW, and last month on RAW, he said he deserves to be screwed by him? i know he's lieing!!!!!!!!
$3 million per year is not the richest deal Wrestling history.
In mid 1980's, Hulk Hogan made over $2.5 million per year, meaning in 1997 dollar, he would have made more than Bret.

@oldschool6804 i didnt get my point across very well in what i wrote a month ago. i dont think montreal WAS definateley a work. my point was, how crazy would it be if we found out today that they had been working us this whole time and even bret was told to kayfabe it. obviously i dont think it was a work (im not a moron). it was more of a "what if" retoricle comment. made around the same time of punks worked shoot promo weeks ago. when all the internet marks were buying into it as a shoot.
tottiballbag10 6 months ago
The wording J.R. and McMahon use to talk about the Montreal Screwjob is brilliant. They never flat out say that wrestling is scripted and there were always people (including myself) who weren't quite sure where the line between reality and theatre in wrestling was in these days. In reality, Bret wouldn't job and a lot of the support Bret got (and the heat Vince caught) for this incident was based solely on that fact. Now, wrestling fans are always complaining about Cena NOT jobbing.

@999grime There is much more to it. Bret Hart did so much for WWF. Vince signed him to a 20 year contract but later told him he can sign with WCW because he won't be needed in the attitude era.
imercana 10 months ago
@imercana bullshit in my eyes, it was a storyline plus Bret was signing to WCW, it is so stupid to complain ... its like playing cops and robbers and complaining because someone shoots you with a toy gun, I just can't comprehend a grown man complaining because someone altered a scripted event, its stupid, everyone knows it was entertainment based and not real, so Bret not winning the title because of a last minute decision (a great decision) is pretty immature, the "controversy" was brilliant

Montreal BLOWJOB .....lol
1932sasd 1 year ago
This was the moment professional wrestling changed forever. It was the beginning of open admittance on the part of the wwf that wrestling was not a legitimate sport. There was no other way around it. Watch the promos and interviews up until 1997, they treated wrestling as a sport not as entertainment. The montreal screwjob and the whole debacle surrounding it changed the industry irrevocably. Although they had admitted in court prior to this that wrestling was not a true sport, this changed it.

Midwaytyrant 1 year ago 3
@Midwaytyrant Thats bullshit. Bret still had a month left on his deal AFTER the Survivor Series. and Vince knew Bret well enough that Bret wouldn't of shown up in WCW with the belt. It was nothing like the Madusa/WCW deal in '95...it's only an excuse for people who are you Pro-McMahon/Michaels.
Bret showed loyalty by fucking going back to a company that was in the shitter in '96...by turning down a deal by WCW which would've PAID him much, much more money. you're full of shit kid.
BCEagle73 1 year ago 3
@BCEagle73 So if bret was so loyal to mcmahon why couldnt he have shown his loyalty by dropping the belt when and to whom hes asked to?
1981bigdee 1 year ago
@1981bigdee I agree. People forget that unless you run your own business, your needs do NOT come first - the needs of the business does. Whether you like the manager or don't like him, the business comes first.
I certainly feel sympathy for Bret, in that he didn't want to drop the belt in his own country, to a person he hated. That's tough and I will always feel for him that way.
That being said, he didn't drop the belt when the business asked him to. That is just point blank, plain and simple.

he was going to walk out of WWE to WCW and refused to loose the WWE championship. of course, vince didn't want Bret to walk away with the belt, so they went bhind his back to make bret loose. shawn didn't even know until just before the match.
it wasn't tha fact of the whole 'making bret loose' is was the way that Bret acted that made him mess it all up for himself. i was against vince for it, but then i did the research.

As I've gotten older, it's been easier for me to see Vince's side of things. This isn't about personal glory, it was about business. This was at the HEIGHT of the Monday night wars, and while Vince still could've done this MUCH better, he did what ultimately was right for the business of the WWF.

what vince mcmahon is saying is not like what bret hart said in his book. bret said that vince WANTED to go against him. that whole "Bret screwed Bret" is just lies. in Bret's book, if he stayed, vince wanted him to lose to Micheals for 2 months, then at the Royal Rumble, he would say that if he didn't win, he would leave, and he was going to lose. so which ever way, 1997-1998 was going to be his last year.
canadiensfan2010 1 year ago
Nice black eye Vince.
tonybiggle 1 year ago
survivor series, the montreal canadian fans actually yelled out that bret sold out at one occation before the whole screwjob. bret may of disagreed with some of the things that wwf was making him do, but he never disagreed to be a heel. he knew it was the time to change, because he can't always be the hero forever. and the thing with the "spoiled kids" i think he was just talking as his character, he doesn't dislike the american fans, his mom's an american.
kevfanbsb 1 year ago
i have to disagree, first, WCW didn't use him to his best ability both bret, eric bishof, as well as vince stated that. however one thing that i forgot to mention was that in the DVD bret mentioned how no one knew that he was leaving WWF except for him and the WWF, but vince or someone supposedly hinted that bret sold out, which he never did. i think that probably effected his character a lot, because now u have not only americans calling him a sell out, but also canadians. in fact on ...
kevfanbsb 1 year ago
2) then shawn turned heel leaving bret with nothing. cuz now he's not the greatest babyface, and he isn't the greatest heel. he has nothing.
he would hav lost (may be not all) but some of his fan base. his character would of just been boring if he's not a heel, if he's not a babyface, and if he was a looser in his own home town!
kevfanbsb 1 year ago
@kevfanbsb I disagree. I'm admittedly pretty anti-Bret Hart when it comes to Montreal. But he was AWESOME in his role as an anti-American heel. I believe it was his best mic work, and it gave his character an edge that was missing from his stale hero character.
Bret never wanted to be a heel period, nor did he want to change with the times. He wanted to keep doing the same thing he'd been doing for years. In his DVD & in Wrestling with Shadows, you can hear some of his bitterness towards......
StuUngar 1 year ago
.......American fans.
StuUngar 1 year ago
i understand bret's point of view. if bret had lost in Canada, his whole character would of gone down the toilet. his character as a canadian hero would of been done, and he wouldn't hav enough of a fan base. think about it
1) vince dragged the hitman character to racial conflict (first it was racism against the demolition, then it was a canada vs. usa thing.) bret became a heel and ppl didn't follow him anymore.
kevfanbsb 1 year ago
i really wish vince would have been at bret's place. hopefully he would have realized what screwing a person means who devoted everything to the business.
