The citizens of the United States pay usurious interest on computer entries that represent counterfeit money that's created by a privately-owned/fractional-reserve central banking cartel established in 1913 that remains erroneously known as the Federal Reserve. The Federal govt. represents the Anglo-American Alliance mistakenly called the New World Order.
➌ We crave friendship and harbor no hate. But America, our America, the America built on the foundation laid by the inspired fathers, can be a party to no permanent military alliance. It can enter into no political commitments, nor assume any economic obligations which will subject our decisions to any other than our own authority.
➋ destinies of the Old World. We do not mean to be entangled. We will accept no responsibility except as our own conscience and judgment, in each instance, may determine. Our eyes never will be blind to a developing menace, our ears never deaf to the call of civilization. We recognize the new order in the world, with the closer contacts which progress has wrought. We sense the call of the human heart for fellowship, fraternity, and cooperation.
Excerpt of Warren Harding's inaugural address, 4 March 1921: The recorded progress of our Republic, materially and spiritually, in itself proves the wisdom of the inherited policy of non-involvement in Old World affairs. Confident of our ability to work out our own destiny, and jealously guarding our right to do so, we seek no part in directing the
Warren Harding was elected by the widest margin in popular vote in American history. He defeated his Democratic opponent 60.3%-34.1% and won by the largest historical spread of 26.2%. The next highest are Calvin Coolidge in 1924 (25.2%), FDR in 1936 (24.3%), Richard Nixon in 1972 (23.2%), LBJ in 1964 (22.6), TR in 1904 (18.8%), and Ronald Reagan in 1984 (18.2%).

Harding basically "said in a VERY discreet and smart manner" that he was black when he told fellow republican leaders that " how am I supposed to know whether or not one of my ancestors might have jumped the fence". He was saying he was indeed part black but in a very discreet manner that wasn't enough for people to classify him as black. Very smart move by him
Doing nothing, when you have the ability to act in order to prevent suffering, does not a great president make. I you are lucky, an economic downturn will correct itself in time. Otherwise, a great man is one who acts greatly.
Treaty of Trianon WASN'T based on democratic referendums(general equal&secret ballots)The"national councils"were elected suspiciously-way,without any local documentations.Czechs don't trust in Slovaks(because very few slovaks joined/supported the"czechoslovak"army against Hungarians(Slovaks were 48%).Romanian politicians didn't trust in Transylvanian romanians, perhabs they didn't want to join to backward poor romania(romanians were 53% in Transylvania).Serbs were minority(22%)in Southern Hungary
since no one else is going to do it, "the america first movement" was the name of the organization that opposed US intervention in World War Two. They would be with Lew Rockwell and Michael More today in terms of foreign policy. They were also full of antisemites and Nazi sympathizers... so yeah... America first isn't as great as it sounds...
Its been said, by a Tory conservative, "that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" certainly one should be skeptical of self proclaimed patriots.
Harding was a flawed man,but a very good president who compares favorably to the disasterous Woodrow Wilson. Wilson led this country unnecessarily into the bloody World War 1. Harding slashed military spending & brought the troops home. Wilson left the economy in shambles. Harding's tax cuts gave us the economic boom we call the "Roaring 20s" Wilson was a racist. Harding advocated complete racial equality. This was in the 1920s. Compared to all that what matters Tea Pot Dome & sex scandels?
@falisha360 - False. It was Amos Kling (Florence Hardings father) who made those claims because he didnt like how Harding talked about him in the Marion Star. Harding being black or having black ancestry is not proven.
@DBJW82 Sorry, but its very true. He has black relatives and there are pictures of him with his black family. I wonder how many other presidents have black in them?
@peachkim Show us the proof he had African American relatives and show us the sources to find the photos you speak of. Otherwise, its revisionist, false history on your part.
@DBJW82 I don't know why you are in such a hissy at the thought of Harding having black in him. They should do a DNA tests on all the presidents, because I am sure Harding is not the only one. I have ton of evidence about Harding but I will not and I can not post it here because this is not the forum and I don't have time.
@peachkim Ive read every book I could find on Harding. It is just a myth, there is no proof. Im not in a hissy fit, i could care less, but dont post things that arent proven correct. You are saying they should do DNA tests on all the presidents then say you are sure he is not the only one. Soooo, where is the DNA evidence that makes you so sure about him then? Post the evidence you speak of through private message if youtube wont allow it on the comments. Im really curious to see it.
@DBJW82 Apparently, you have NOT read EVERY book on Harding, but I am not about to argue with you. Stories about Harding has been around since he ran for President. Like I said, they should do a DNA test on ALL presidents (DNA tests was not around when Harding was alive). If his family or this country have any guts, we would do a DNA test on him and other presidents. Until then, its your word against mine.
@peachkim No, its history against you, not me. It wasnt proven true 90 years ago, and it still isnt proven today. I asked you to PM me your sources and you keep dodging. Id like to read and see what you have read and saw.
@DBJW82 I am not interested in going back and forth with you and I will NOT PM you anything just so you can discredit my sources. The truth will reveal itself one day and I will be proven correct.
"He was an intellectual lightweight who was prone to verbal gaffes and malapropisms. He surrounded himself with corrupt businessmen who subsequently entagled his brief administration in countless scandals."
Huh, kinda sounds familiar, doesn't it? Harding was a well intentioned man who made the unfortunate choice of loading his cabinet with his corrupt gambling buddies. Anyone who believes there is a such thing as an "honest politician" is dreaming.
He was an intellectual lightweight who was prone to verbal gaffes and malapropisms. He surrounded himself with corrupt businessmen who subsequently entagled his brief administration in countless scandals. Fuck Warren Harding; he sucked.
Ireland is adopting the cut government spending approach to the crisis as the conservatives here want. 15% of the economy is gone and the new generation of young Irish are on their way out. Unemployment increased from around 4% to around 14%.
The 1920 depression is more analogous to the severe 1981-82 recession under Ronald Reagan. That was also solved by reducing interest rates. It was not solved by tax reductions, as the growth took place after taxes were increased.
What??! Interest rates went DOWN under Reagan? Do you recall Paul Volcker, currently widely ignored adviser to Obama, Fed Chairman during Reagan's first term (although appointed by Carter), RAISING interest rates to unprecedented levels to kill Carter era inflation? Along with falling inflation, it was indeed Reagan's tax cuts as well as deregulation and union fighting that started the 1980s recovery, and indeed set the stage for the 1990s boom.
The 1920 depression was just a big deflation. There were no runs on the banks nor any systemic failures in the financial system. To cure that was easy - all they had to do in the end was reduce the interest rates. This approach would not have worked in 1929 and would not have worked in 2009 as systemic issues in the financial system itself existed.
In 1920-1921 thousands of small banks went bankrupt but there was not a systematic risk. The Fed was not powerful enough and the economy was not so centralized then
The 1920 depression was caused by three deflationary tendencies taking place simultaneously. One, most of the demobilised soldiers entered the work force in 1920 and this allowed bosses to reduce wages. Second, the government cut spending significantly. Thirdly, the Fed decided to increase interest rates significantly. It's the kind of stuff that conservatives like that caused the depression in the first place - to favour creditors over debtors, to cut wages and to cut spending.
@lordhighexecutioner Umm, I dont recall Wilson cutting government spending or lowering interest rates, seeing as HE was President during that recession/depression after WW1 ended. That was Harding, when he became President in 1921. It was his minimal policies combined with letting the economy correct itself that paved the way for the roaring 20's. All those things conservatives like, helped it.
Is your real name Paul Krugman? You have the same tendency to manipulate historical events to suit your ideology. Go read Milton Friedman's "A monetary history of the United States." You ignore the confiscatory marginal tax rates and high regulations under the Wilson administration. The US was on the gold standard in 1920 so monetary policy could not play the role it does today in the economy with our fiat currency.
His subordinates let him down and he was responsible for their appointment, so in that sense he was to blame. But he was not corrupt in the sense that he intentionally misued his office to benefit himself or others.
harding made very very wise moves during the 1920 depression.... he did nothing... and that was the solution.. his administration cut the gov spending in half and within less than a year the free market corrected and that next summer the economy was back to normal... but our horribly written textbooks tell everyone to hate him... and their only excuse is corruption... yet 2 of his top to advisors after commiting fraud in some medicine scam.. both committed suicide
What's up with hating textbooks? Mine just says that there was a recession (obviously due both to economic cycles and the end of WWI) but that almost immediately after that, economic prosperity reached America under Harding and Coolidge's terms. They also say that Harding was NOT a bad-guy, but had the misfortune of being a weak-leader and poor detector of corrupt men.
Now, you can't compare a typical, post-war recession to the GD, which was completely different by nature.
@tyyyylenol Also he began the roaring twenties - a surplus for 10 years in a row ! He went from a huge deficit to and amazing surplus and then hoover and fdr screwed things up even though the accumulated national debt was almost gone
@RonocDondra352 Almost all historians and economists acknowledge the short post-war boom (The Roaring 20's). And it was an unregulated stock market and serious overproduction of goods after the War that really should've been regulated by the Fed.
So what I'm saying is, the economic bubble (serious underlying problems over what seemed to be a great economy) was great in 20s, and it burst when Hoover became the president.
Coolidge just might be the luckiest president ever for that.
@skw4712 Supposedly, Coolidge knew that there'd be a bust soon, so he "did not choose to run" in 1928. Also rumor has it that he did not wish to do anything about the stock market because someone told him it was an affair of New York State. Therefore, Albany had the responsibiity of regulating the stock market, rather than Washington.
Warren Harding was actually one of our best presidents; do your research and you will discover the many good things he did, including saving us from the tyrannical and horrible Woodrow Wilson No, it is. George W. Bush who gave Republicans a bad name; I don't even think this spending spree warmongering idiot was a real Republican. Calvin Coolidge is my favorite Republican president, followed by Eisenhower; each gave us two terms of peace and prosperity.
hahaha...and Lincoln, Nixon and both Bush's gave you a good rep...?
it is a good thing to give Republicans, democrats alike, a bad rep...Republicans and Democrats are morons...following party lines instead of freedom and liberty...
as far as Liberty goes, Harding gave Americans a good rep.
Thank you for helping to spread the truth about the most underestimated president of all, Warren Harding. The only other Republican president I like is Calvin Coolidge; the only Democrat I like is JFK, who started to radically change things and was killed as a result. After the first six presidents it was mostly downhill, with the appalling Woodrow Wilson wrecking the nation.
@lothartheterrible Woodrow Wilson destroyed what America COULD of been. He imposed the income tax, styfling part of our industry. He imposed the Federal Reserve, gaurenteeing the goverment would overspend and cause inflation. He even got us into WWI. President Harding on the other hand was great, he handled the depression of 1920 perfect and got us out of it.
Not to mention that depression was THEE worst the country had ever seen up to that point. Amazing what no government intervention and lower taxes and less spending can do. Not to mention the reparations payments with European nations they were able to agree on.
Please do your research and you will learn the FACT of the depression of 1921; probably the reason you don't know about it is that Harding and his brilliant cabinet allowed it to correct itself, rather than meddling with bailouts and fixes. Hoover and F.D> Roosevelt's tampering prolonged the Great Depression until after World War II; the economy didn't snap back until Truman was in office, and Truman did give us a good economy despite his imperialistic, inhuman nature and acts.
uhhhh... you might need to do some research hahaha... yea there was a depression in 1920... it was actually statistically worse than the one that hit us in the in 29
@EndTheFedRes Don't have any links but, I am reading an old book my father had titled "The Inside Story of The Harding Tragedy". You might find that interesting.
what goes on with them, with every detail, and even if regulations are put in place like they have since the 1920's, you still have greed, corruption, mismanagement and most regulations put in place dont work anyway. Name me one President in the 20th century who didnt have a recession or depression under his watch?
Calvin Coolidge and John F.Kennedy gave us wonderful economic times, and both lowered taxes. Was there a recession under the appalling Wiiliam J. Clinton?
@john48martin- #1- You need to read a bit more about prohibition and when and were it started.
#2- By the late 1920's, banks had large deposits and surpluses and they began to lend money to brokers and speculators. They believed prices could only go up. You can argue all you want that under Harding, Coolidge, not enough regulations were in place, but the problems with banks and speculators and wall street that were going on back then still remain today. I take it as no President can control....
He was loved by the majority of the American people and it was his policies that helped pave the way for a booming 1920's. Ill take no wars, a booming economy, 3% unemployment eventually, and lower taxes anyday. Coolidge followed up with the same, in addition, less govt spending, balanced budgets and no micromanaging. Keep blaming them for greed corruption, market speculators, the fed reserve and the depression though. Regulation or not, those things will always be there.
John48Martin- Im not sure you have read or understood what you might have read about Harding. And when it comes to his philandering, some of it was rumor. Some of it unproven. And your argument about what he did, or didnt do in office is just laughable. While he did have accomplishments, many were small compared to today, but vowed to return the country to normalcy after the country was tired of WW1. To do very little is just what was needed and frankly, Presidential. Same with Coolidge.
If my arguments are laughable, why is Harding ALWAYS put at the bottom of EVERY list ranking the Presidents? You must know you are not fooling anyone with such ridiculous bully tactics. To do little is not what any President should ever do. He did what his Handlers told him to do as long as he could get to the women, booze, golf and beach.
Why do liberals and liberal historians think that Woodrow WIlson, who segregated the government, prasied the Ku Klux Klan, slaughtered innocents in a totally unecessary world war, imprisoned anyone whi disagreed with him, gave away America's wealth to a small band of global bankers by establishing the Federal Reserve, hated women, Latinos, African Americans, and instuituted the IRS, is a "great" president? They are SILENT on these matters.
@john48martin Do you think Eugene Debs and other labor union heads should have been imprisoned by Woodrow Wilson? Harding had an excellent civil rights record compared to Wilson. Also, Harding's rejection of the appalling League of Nations, his non interventionist foreign and economic policies, his arms reduction and control all make him a much better president than many.
Wilson was a terrible President. NO I don't think he should have imprisoned Debs. Harding although, did not have a good record on civil rights. Remember the lynching was in high gear in the 20's. The League of Nations was rejected before Harding took office. His economic policies of letting the banks run amuck is what got us into the Great Depression. His Veterans Affairs Sec. was bilking the VA for millions of fraudulent claims. Arms are always reduced when the war is over.
It always amuses me how liberals and liberal historians get bent out of shape about Harding's extra-marital affairs and then turn around and apologize for one of the worst characters ever elected to the presidency, Bill Clinton; they explain away his affairs and lying. It also amuses me how they stick up for JFK, who was actually a good tax slashing and independent minded guy. They have no consistent philosophy.
No, it wasn't Harding's extra marital affairs that are the problem. It was paying off his mistress with Republican Committee funds as hush money. A mistress who was living in Germany. It was also another mistress who had a child he wouldn't take responsibility. Today we call that a "dead beat dad."
He was a great actor. Like another dunce we had that told great jokes and after senility hit, had no idea who his cabinet was, but that actor came much later.
People keep comparing today to what happened in the 30's with the depression, but fail to look just a decade or so earlier where lessons can be learned about how to get the country on the road to prosperity, but while in it, keep it and how to avoid depressions and stock market and bank crashes. Unfortunatley, liberal governments want people to think that more spending and higher taxes are the way to go and that we need the government to fix problems. History shows that to not be the case.
Exactly right DBJW82 ! Liberal policies to increase the size, scope, power, theft from our wallets -- by the federal govt -- is exactly the opposite of what our Founding Fathers wanted. If the federal govt stayed out of our pocketbooks (except for taxes to support the military and a few other necessities) then the citizens would be more free to go to the competing states would work best. Limited federal govt is SO important -- and the liberals have ruined it since the 1930s.
history shows that allowing banks and corporations to run amuck without any regulation like Harding allowed and then Coolidge and then another Republican do nothing Hoover, it eventually comes crashing down. Kenny Boy Lay also had a free ride, Oops
Hoover was actually one of Woodrow Wilson's "wonder boys" who managed to get into Harding's cabinet, and it was Hoover's governmental meddling that paved the way for FDR's New Deal; to lump Hoover into the same fold as Harding aned Coolidge is historically incorrect, but liberal historians get it wring, as usual so they can put that horrible Wilson and dangerous FDR on pedestals. Very few Amercans can think for themselves, or even think for that matter.
Hoover was a do nothing like Harding and Coolidge. They are the ones who paved the way to depression. Wilson was a terrible President. Don't compare these incompetents with FDR. Plenty of Americans can think for themselves and most can spell "wrong" You are wrong.
@john48martin If you'll look at the keyboard, the 'i' key is located directly next to the 'o' key, so I made an obvious finger slip which I didn't realize until after I had clicked "Post Comment." Your comment about this is a cheap shot and had no relevance to the discussion at hand. Any educated person can se that I can communicated clearly.
@billyguns2 Oh, dear, I made another fingerslip by not adding another 'e' to the word "see;" you wuill no doubt seize upon this instead of commenting on the substance of my remarks. One must also take into account the overall impact of a man's presidency instead of focusing on one aspect. I could write a book about LB Johnson and call it "MURDER, INC."
Well, bully, you cannot "communicated clearly" You have spent all your time commenting on your weak typing skills and none on the fact that the policy of laissez-faire further enhanced by Harding Coolidge Hoover and all the Republicans at the time directly caused Wall Street to run out of control and now we have history repeating itself. If Republicans were like Teddy Roosevelt instead of Bush, I would be glad to applaud them. They are paid off by the corporations.
@john48martin Hoover a "do nothing?" He did too much, thereby compounding the problem of the depression. FDR expanded upon Hoover's meddling and turned it into a ten year depression! One cannot lump Woodorw WIlson's wonder boy, Hoover, into the same category as Harding and Coolidge. You are believing those liberal/socalist historians who delight in rewriting history.
History is written by liberals. It is true he personally had nothing to do with the scandals involving his cabinet members other then when finding out about them, questioned whether or not he should say anything. I believe he went to Hoover for advice. Anywho, Harding inherited a deep recession which became a depression. He took a more hands off approach other then lowering taxes and the depression was very short lived. Many more details but his few economic policies paved the way for the R20's!
Second, that rumor was spread by his Democratic opponent during the 1920 election. We easily forget that the Democrats were long the party of segregationists and the Republicans of abolitionists. Harding's Democratic predecessor Wilson segregated the Federal bureaucracy and hated blacks. One of Harding's first acts was to reverse that.
This guy was a great President. He inherited an economy much worse than Obama had. His prescription for private sector job-creation vitality was the opposite of Obama/Pelosi/Reid: Reduce/slash govt spending by about 40% in two short years, decrease taxes and regulations. And guess what? The economy started to quickly grow again. No surprise.....why is it that Democrats including Pelosi/Reid who've been in charge of taxing/spending for 2 1/2 years not.....always want the opposite?
Oh My God, That is hilarious sbourg55, This man is considered the worst president in history. His cronies were crooks who stole money from the treasury faster than they could make it. His policy of doing nothing and letting Wall Street run amuck is what caused the Great Depression. No regulation for corporations is like giving the fox the full run of the henhouse.
Dear John48Martin: You really should read more. He did NOT have a policy of doing nothing. He did NOT play a part in Teapot Dome (even the oil leases were legal), and he died 6 years before the Depression began with the Oct '29 crash. Please do yourself a favor and either start reading more, or stop having so many groundless opinions.
I do read. "The Ohio Gang" by Charles Mee. I recommend to anyone still in the clouds about this ne'er do well. I have read quotes from Warren where he tells the leader of the Congress to make the bills and he will sign whatever they want. His poker, golf, drinking partner Albert Falls was the Secretary of Interior who rigged up the teapot dome scandal. lie down with dogs.... I would love to give plenty of evidence in a grounded debate. Why so Harding loving? relative?
Besides the fact that he was lazy, stupid, womanizing, cared more about golf, poker and booze during prohibition than his country, only George Bush rivals him for lowest spot
@john48martin Everything you say here is untrue; Harding did a lot to save us from Woodrow Wilson's insanity, althougb once the Fed, IRS, and insane foreign policy had been established by that racist warmonger Wilson ( who imprisoned anybody who disagreed with him), it's been mostly downhill.
Like what did Harding do? He himself said Congress could make all the decisions, he would sign what they wanted. That was why they propped him up. As Senator he did nothing, as President, same.
HArding's rejection of the LEague of Nations, his restrained foreign policy, his success in arms reduction and control, his pardoning of EugneDbs and all of Wilson's unjustly imprisoned dissenters, his espousal of women's rights and sticking up for the African American,(WIlson had segregated the government) and his mostly marvelous cabinet ( which included Charles Evans Hughes and Andrew Mellon! ) are high points.
Mostly "marvelous cabinet". You didn't read the "Ohio Gang" did you? You point out the only 2 in Harding's cabinet who were not indicted or implicated in scandal. harding was a dunce. Eugene Debbs won over Harding like he won over anyone who ever talked with him. Doesn't make Harding a genius. Harding had nothing to do with women's suffrage. It was signed by Wilson. Harding stayed out of the "lynching" debate like the coward he was.
@john48martin Harding's few corrupted friends pale in comparison to the criminal activities of the Lyndon Johnson Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama administrations; nothing is perfect, but we surely could use a man like Harding today in the face of such rampant corruption, lies, and outright theft perpetrated by our government on a daily basis.
@john48martin Here are my criteria as to what constitues a "Good" president: respect for and adherence to the U.S. Constitution; preserved the peace, i.e., no foreign entanglements or unnecessary interventions; laissez-faire economic common sense; and courage to stand up to the evil world financiers and central bankers. Washington, Jackson, Van Buren, Tyler, Garfield, Cleveland, Harding, Coolidge, and JFK had he lived all look good to me.
Respect for the constitution? You mean like illegally gambling, ignoring the 21st ammendment to the constitution banning alcohol sales. We were not a war in the 2 and a half years he was President, gee, that is a pretty low bar. He did not stand up to the financiers. He and his laissez faire buddies caused the great depression, which didn't happen in a weekend. It took years of Laissez Faire. Teddy Roosevelt would have never let the likes of Harding Coolidge Hoover let Wall Street run amuck....
I agree. You have nothing to say. Why don't you debate the merits of a man considered to be the worst president in american history instead of writing ridiculous incoherent babble about channeling idiocy?
Actually that's your department, i don't debate any merit in politicians, you seem to be the cliche bum that gravitates to the cult of personality and allows revisionist history and opining from "historians" to rank presidents.
only comments I've made have been against the incumbent incompetents, to question the over simplification of history by incurious souls such as yourself and to state that politicians that gridlock into nothing actually are good as they don't destroy things.
But please continue with your knee jerk assertions, internet strongman that you are, how could you possibly be refuted with such irrefutable ad hominem laced arguments.
Sad really that you have wasted so much time trying to fight over the legacy of a dead man, the incoherent babble has been monopolized by your insecure little self.
His personal life got in the way of his political life. He was an amazing, brilliant man (like Richard Nixon), but people simply look down on him because of things completely irrelevant to politics.
Presidents who did the most to forward liberal agenda: LBJ (great society) Nixon (yes, Nixon;he'd be considered liberal by today's standards. He continued and expanded on LBJ) Carter Most conservative presidents: Kennedy Reagan Most effective: Nixon Reagan Clinton
by Liberal agenda, im assuming you mean "Progressive agenda"...see Obama today, refered to as "Liberal"...but nothing of the such, a Progressive.
Woodrow Wilson set precedents for all other "Progressive" and "Imperialist" Presidents to follow...thus, Wilson is easily the worst President of all time.
Lincoln would be, but his Progressive/Imperialistic policies where all removed during the Grant Presidency.
Worse modern presidents: Jimmy Carter LBJ GW Bush Honorary Mention: Ronald Reagan - Bush #1 was right; it is voodoo economics. Best Modern President s: Eisenhower Kennedy (under-rated) Clinton Honorary Mention: Nixon - He can't disassociate himself from Watergate and resigning, but he was probably the most effective modern president.
Best Presidents: 1.Thomas Jefferson 2.Theodore Roosevelt 3.Dwight D. Eisenhower. 4.Calvin Coolidge 5.Abraham Lincoln Worst Presidents: 1.Herbert Hoover 2.John Adams 3.Andrew Johnson 4.Jimmy Carter 5.Lydon B. Johnson
Sorry...this list is ridiculous, the only "decent" President in your "Best" list is Coolidge; but he expanded the money supply by 70% during the 20's and pushed the FED to keep the interest rate low, thus...the Great Depression resulted...which, FDR could have easily avoided with economic and governmental policies such as Warren Harding.
While I don't necessarily agree but can accept good reasons for most of these (also Buchanan absolutely should be there) I'd love to hear your reasons for John Adams deserving 2nd worst. Wow...one of the seminal founders of the nation on the worst list??? Even your #1 best, Jefferson, came to admire his onetime opponent.
Best presidents: 1. George Wasington 2. Abraham Lincoln 3. Ronald Reagan 4. JFK 5. Andrew Jackson Worst Presidents: (Worst on top) 1. Herbert Hoover 2. Jimmy Carter 3. Barack Obama 4. Warren Harding 5. James Buchanan
Best presidents: 1. Calvin Coolidge 2. Warren Harding 3. John Tyler 4. Grover Cleveland 5. Martin Van Buren Worst: (Worst on top) 1. Woodrow Wilson 2. Franklin Roosevelt 3. Abraham Lincoln 4. George W. Bush 5. Barack Obama But that's just me.
The only thing hat got me to respond to you is you saying Lincoln is one of the worst. And GWB is starting to be judged by history as one of the greatest presidents ever. But not right now.
I thought the Lincoln would warrant a response. But hey, if everyone agreed all the time, the world would get boring quickly. ;-)
I don't hate him because he was against slavery or anything, but mostly because of his protectionist trade policies, his racist statements prior to the Emancipation Proclamation and even after (i.e., that blacks should be deported back to Africa or to Latin America), and his centralization of banking.
He even said himself, "My politics are short and sweet, like the old woman's dance. I am in favor of a national bank ... in favor of the internal improvements system and a high protective tariff."
As a libertarian, I disagree with all this. I feel like he got America started down the wrong path, and that's why he's #3 on my list of the worst.
I suppose he could have come out with tarp, a stimulus package, add trillions to the debt, and tax increases on the rich who were the main players in modernization at the time. (Yea, what would have happend to Henry Ford and the car industry?? lol). Read your damn history people!
#2- Harding inherited a country in shambles and a very deep recession in the months following WW!. His plan was to ride it out and let the economy fix itself, though with the help of mellon lowered interest rates as well as taxes. The "rich" in fact paid a ton of taxes. Result- A very short lived depression and groundwork laid for about 8 years of the greatest growth and prosperity this country has ever seen.
You're right Coolidge was his favorite (but same difference -- two terrible Presidents - now wonder Ronnie admired them so). Yes..the "prosperous" Roaring 20's a time (just like today) with the GREATEST wealth disparity ever...followed by the misery of the GREAT DEPRESSION!
> Yes..the "prosperous" Roaring 20's a time (just like today) with the GREATEST wealth disparity ever
That's all you progressives care about, wealth disparity. Even the poor got wealthier during the 20s. You're only happy when everyone is equally miserable, your ideology in its ultimate expression gave the world Mao's China and Stalin's Soviet Union (except the small corrupt ruling elite, who make out quite nicely in your system).
Ugh again,,, he was not black. It was Hardings wifes dick of a father Amos Kling who started that rumor because he did not like the things Harding was writing about him in the days of when Harding worked for the Marion Ohio newspaper.
i think Harding was one of the best presidents ever, unlike most presidents when the country was hit with economic hardship, despite the constant demands coming from his treasury secretary (Herbert Hover) to intervene, Harding actually stuck to true free market principals and allowed the country to go into a depression which allowed the market to work out the problems, and as a result the depression was very short lived and America was on a path to economic growth in a short amount of time
mattgeb84 says "Harding actually stuck to true free market principals and allowed the country to go into a depression which allowed the market to work out the problems"
WTF!! yes..the glory of the unfettered, unregulated free-market...throwing millions out of work and into social upheavel and misery while enriching the pockets of a tiny few. Sounds like fuedalism to me.
free unregulated markets create prosperity for all, any notion otherwise is shear bullshit. big government socialism always leads to a severe loss of liberties and always fails.
to much government intervention is what caused all of the economic problems we have today
> i think Harding was one of the best presidents ever, ...despite the constant demands coming from his treasury secretary (Herbert Hover) to intervene,
Agree with you, but correction: Hoover was Harding's commerce secretary, Andrew Mellon was Treasury secretary. Mellon studied Wilson's disastrous progressive taxation and concluded, long before Arthur Laffer (of Laffer curve fame, he influenced Reagan's supply-side economics) that high marginal tax rates create falling tax revenues.
Warren G. Harding kept the US out of the United Nations, secured the first signifigant arms control agreement in US history, succesfully negotiated a separate peace with Germany and was the first US president to speak in the south promoting civil rights. Harding had nothing to do with the Teapot Dome scandal as he is preceived. While he did have many faults, he was by no means our "worst president". That title undoubtably goes to his predesesser Woodrow Wilson.
Good post. Unfortunatley, historians generally rate presidents based on how much or how little they achieved in office, and when it comes to scandals, the facts and papers from early 20th century are pretty much ignored. Its a case of another President people need to read about. He had his faults, but was a good man, who was in fact loved by the American people, and in his short time in office, achieved some important things. Hes not the best, but definitley not the worst.
One of our greatest presidents. The democrats attack him even now, although he handled a terrible recession and brought an end to it quickly.

Compared to all that what matters Tea Pot Dome & sex scandels?

lordhighexecutioner 1 year ago
The 1920 depression is more analogous to the severe 1981-82 recession under Ronald Reagan. That was also solved by reducing interest rates. It was not solved by tax reductions, as the growth took place after taxes were increased.
lordhighexecutioner 1 year ago
@lordhighexecutioner
What??! Interest rates went DOWN under Reagan? Do you recall Paul Volcker, currently widely ignored adviser to Obama, Fed Chairman during Reagan's first term (although appointed by Carter), RAISING interest rates to unprecedented levels to kill Carter era inflation? Along with falling inflation, it was indeed Reagan's tax cuts as well as deregulation and union fighting that started the 1980s recovery, and indeed set the stage for the 1990s boom.
mlebauer 1 year ago
The 1920 depression was just a big deflation. There were no runs on the banks nor any systemic failures in the financial system. To cure that was easy - all they had to do in the end was reduce the interest rates. This approach would not have worked in 1929 and would not have worked in 2009 as systemic issues in the financial system itself existed.
lordhighexecutioner 1 year ago
In 1920-1921 thousands of small banks went bankrupt but there was not a systematic risk. The Fed was not powerful enough and the economy was not so centralized then
xaviqaz 1 year ago
The 1920 depression was caused by three deflationary tendencies taking place simultaneously. One, most of the demobilised soldiers entered the work force in 1920 and this allowed bosses to reduce wages. Second, the government cut spending significantly. Thirdly, the Fed decided to increase interest rates significantly. It's the kind of stuff that conservatives like that caused the depression in the first place - to favour creditors over debtors, to cut wages and to cut spending.
lordhighexecutioner 1 year ago
@lordhighexecutioner Umm, I dont recall Wilson cutting government spending or lowering interest rates, seeing as HE was President during that recession/depression after WW1 ended. That was Harding, when he became President in 1921. It was his minimal policies combined with letting the economy correct itself that paved the way for the roaring 20's. All those things conservatives like, helped it.
DBJW82 1 year ago
@lordhighexecutioner
Is your real name Paul Krugman? You have the same tendency to manipulate historical events to suit your ideology. Go read Milton Friedman's "A monetary history of the United States." You ignore the confiscatory marginal tax rates and high regulations under the Wilson administration. The US was on the gold standard in 1920 so monetary policy could not play the role it does today in the economy with our fiat currency.
mlebauer 1 year ago
Harding was not corrupt.
His subordinates let him down and he was responsible for their appointment, so in that sense he was to blame. But he was not corrupt in the sense that he intentionally misued his office to benefit himself or others.
bcgoodell 1 year ago
harding made very very wise moves during the 1920 depression.... he did nothing... and that was the solution.. his administration cut the gov spending in half and within less than a year the free market corrected and that next summer the economy was back to normal... but our horribly written textbooks tell everyone to hate him... and their only excuse is corruption... yet 2 of his top to advisors after commiting fraud in some medicine scam.. both committed suicide
tyyyylenol 2 years ago 31
What's up with hating textbooks? Mine just says that there was a recession (obviously due both to economic cycles and the end of WWI) but that almost immediately after that, economic prosperity reached America under Harding and Coolidge's terms. They also say that Harding was NOT a bad-guy, but had the misfortune of being a weak-leader and poor detector of corrupt men.
Now, you can't compare a typical, post-war recession to the GD, which was completely different by nature.
KirbiesandYoshies 1 year ago
@tyyyylenol Also he began the roaring twenties - a surplus for 10 years in a row ! He went from a huge deficit to and amazing surplus and then hoover and fdr screwed things up even though the accumulated national debt was almost gone
RonocDondra352 10 months ago
@RonocDondra352 Almost all historians and economists acknowledge the short post-war boom (The Roaring 20's). And it was an unregulated stock market and serious overproduction of goods after the War that really should've been regulated by the Fed.
So what I'm saying is, the economic bubble (serious underlying problems over what seemed to be a great economy) was great in 20s, and it burst when Hoover became the president.
Coolidge just might be the luckiest president ever for that.
skw4712 7 months ago
@skw4712 Supposedly, Coolidge knew that there'd be a bust soon, so he "did not choose to run" in 1928. Also rumor has it that he did not wish to do anything about the stock market because someone told him it was an affair of New York State. Therefore, Albany had the responsibiity of regulating the stock market, rather than Washington.

DBJW82 2 years ago
If my arguments are laughable, why is Harding ALWAYS put at the bottom of EVERY list ranking the Presidents? You must know you are not fooling anyone with such ridiculous bully tactics. To do little is not what any President should ever do. He did what his Handlers told him to do as long as he could get to the women, booze, golf and beach.

Why do liberals and liberal historians think that Woodrow WIlson, who segregated the government, prasied the Ku Klux Klan, slaughtered innocents in a totally unecessary world war, imprisoned anyone whi disagreed with him, gave away America's wealth to a small band of global bankers by establishing the Federal Reserve, hated women, Latinos, African Americans, and instuituted the IRS, is a "great" president? john48martin 2 years ago
@john48martin Do you think Eugene Debs and other labor union heads should have been imprisoned by Woodrow Wilson? Harding had an excellent civil rights record compared to Wilson. Also, Harding's rejection of the appalling League of Nations, his non interventionist foreign and economic policies, his arms reduction and control all make him a much better president than many.
billyguns2 2 years ago
Wilson was a terrible President. NO I don't think he should have imprisoned Debs. Harding although, did not have a good record on civil rights. Remember the lynching was in high gear in the 20's. The League of Nations was rejected before Harding took office. His economic policies of letting the banks run amuck is what got us into the Great Depression. His Veterans Affairs Sec. was bilking the VA for millions of fraudulent claims. Arms are always reduced when the war is over.

No, it wasn't Harding's extra marital affairs that are the problem. It was paying off his mistress with Republican Committee funds as hush money. A mistress who was living in Germany. It was also another mistress who had a child he wouldn't take responsibility. Today we call that a "dead beat dad."

DBJW82 2 years ago
Exactly right DBJW82 ! Liberal policies to increase the size, scope, power, theft from our wallets -- by the federal govt -- is exactly the opposite of what our Founding Fathers wanted. If the federal govt stayed out of our pocketbooks (except for taxes to support the military and a few other necessities) then the citizens would be more free to go to the competing states would work best. Limited federal govt is SO important -- and the liberals have ruined it since the 1930s.

Second, that rumor was spread by his Democratic opponent during the 1920 election. We easily forget that the Democrats were long the party of segregationists and the Republicans of abolitionists. I would love to give plenty of evidence in a grounded debate. Why so Harding loving? relative?
john48martin 2 years ago
Besides the fact that he was lazy, stupid, womanizing, cared more about golf, poker and booze during prohibition than his country, only George Bush rivals him for lowest spot
john48martin 2 years ago
@john48martin Everything you say here is untrue; Harding did a lot to save us from Woodrow Wilson's insanity, althougb once the Fed, IRS, and insane foreign policy had been established by that racist warmonger Wilson ( who imprisoned anybody who disagreed with him), it's been mostly downhill.
billyguns2 2 years ago
Like what did Harding do? He himself said Congress could make all the decisions, he would sign what they wanted. That was why they propped him up. As Senator he did nothing, as President, same.
john48martin 2 years ago
HArding's rejection of the LEague of Nations, his restrained foreign policy, his success in arms reduction and control, his pardoning of EugneDbs and all of Wilson's unjustly imprisoned dissenters, his espousal of women's rights and sticking up for the African American,(WIlson had segregated the government) and his mostly marvelous cabinet ( which included Charles Evans Hughes and Andrew Mellon! ) are high points.
billyguns2 2 years ago
Mostly "marvelous cabinet". You didn't read the "Ohio Gang" did you? You point out the only 2 in Harding's cabinet who were not indicted or implicated in scandal. harding was a dunce. Eugene Debbs won over Harding like he won over anyone who ever talked with him. Doesn't make Harding a genius. Harding had nothing to do with women's suffrage. It was signed by Wilson. Harding stayed out of the "lynching" debate like the coward he was.
john48martin 2 years ago
@john48martin Harding's few corrupted friends pale in comparison to the criminal activities of the Lyndon Johnson Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama administrations; nothing is perfect, but we surely could use a man like Harding today in the face of such rampant corruption, lies, and outright theft perpetrated by our government on a daily basis.
billyguns2 2 years ago
@john48martin Here are my criteria as to what constitues a "Good" president: respect for and adherence to the U.S. Constitution; preserved the peace, i.e., no foreign entanglements or unnecessary interventions; laissez-faire economic common sense; and courage to stand up to the evil world financiers and central bankers. Washington, Jackson, Van Buren, Tyler, Garfield, Cleveland, Harding, Coolidge, and JFK had he lived all look good to me.
billyguns2 2 years ago
Respect for the constitution? You mean like illegally gambling, ignoring the 21st ammendment to the constitution banning alcohol sales. We were not a war in the 2 and a half years he was President, gee, that is a pretty low bar. He did not stand up to the financiers. He and his laissez faire buddies caused the great depression, which didn't happen in a weekend. It took years of Laissez Faire. Teddy Roosevelt would have never let the likes of Harding Coolidge Hoover let Wall Street run amuck....

Sounds like Obama, except he congress is unlikable so they channel their idiocy into his mouth.

Your comment makes no sense, you seem to "channel your idiocy into your own mouth"
john48martin 2 years ago
Spoken like a juvenile on youtube typical immaturity from someone with nothing to say.
Speegs23 2 years ago
I agree. You have nothing to say. Why don't you debate the merits of a man considered to be the worst president in american history instead of writing ridiculous incoherent babble about channeling idiocy?
john48martin 2 years ago
Actually that's your department, i don't debate any merit in politicians, you seem to be the cliche bum that gravitates to the cult of personality and allows revisionist history and opining from "historians" to rank presidents.
only comments I've made have been against the incumbent incompetents, to question the over simplification of history by incurious souls such as yourself and to state that politicians that gridlock into nothing actually are good as they don't destroy things.
Speegs23 2 years ago
But please continue with your knee jerk assertions, internet strongman that you are, how could you possibly be refuted with such irrefutable ad hominem laced arguments.
Sad really that you have wasted so much time trying to fight over the legacy of a dead man, the incoherent babble has been monopolized by your insecure little self.
Speegs23 2 years ago
His personal life got in the way of his political life. He was an amazing, brilliant man (like Richard Nixon), but people simply look down on him because of things completely irrelevant to politics.

by Liberal agenda, im assuming you mean "Progressive agenda"...see Obama today, refered to as "Liberal"...but nothing of the such, a Progressive.
Woodrow Wilson set precedents for all other "Progressive" and "Imperialist" Presidents to follow...thus, Wilson is easily the worst President of all time.
Lincoln would be, but his Progressive/Imperialistic policies where all removed during the Grant Presidency.

The only thing hat got me to respond to you is you saying Lincoln is one of the worst. And GWB is starting to be judged by history as one of the greatest presidents ever. But not right now.
insanekillamonster1 2 years ago
I thought the Lincoln would warrant a response. But hey, if everyone agreed all the time, the world would get boring quickly. ;-)
I don't hate him because he was against slavery or anything, but mostly because of his protectionist trade policies, his racist statements prior to the Emancipation Proclamation and even after (i.e., that blacks should be deported back to Africa or to Latin America), and his centralization of banking.
todaystomsawyer 2 years ago
He even said himself, "My politics are short and sweet, like the old woman's dance. I am in favor of a national bank ... in favor of the internal improvements system and a high protective tariff."
As a libertarian, I disagree with all this. I feel like he got America started down the wrong path, and that's why he's #3 on my list of the worst.

I suppose he could have come out with tarp, a stimulus package, add trillions to the debt, and tax increases on the rich who were the main players in modernization at the time. (Yea, what would have happend to Henry Ford and the car industry?? lol). Read your damn history people!

#1- It was Coolidge who was a favorite of Reagan.
DBJW82 2 years ago
You're right Coolidge was his favorite (but same difference -- two terrible Presidents - now wonder Ronnie admired them so). Yes..the "prosperous" Roaring 20's a time (just like today) with the GREATEST wealth disparity ever...followed by the misery of the GREAT DEPRESSION!

Harding was a favorite of Reagan -- and he attempted to model his domestic policies after his...and we got the same disasterous results.

Ugh again,,, he was not black. It was Hardings wifes dick of a father Amos Kling who started that rumor because he did not like the things Harding was writing about him in the days of when Harding worked for the Marion Ohio newspaper.

probably wasn't true
but as Warren said "Maybe one of my ancestors jumped the fence."

i think Harding was one of the best presidents ever, unlike most presidents when the country was hit with economic hardship, despite the constant demands coming from his treasury secretary (Herbert Hover) to intervene, Harding actually stuck to true free market principals and allowed the country to go into a depression which allowed the market to work out the problems, and as a result the depression was very short lived and America was on a path to economic growth in a short amount of time
mattgeb84 2 years ago
mattgeb84 says "Harding actually stuck to true free market principals and allowed the country to go into a depression which allowed the market to work out the problems"
WTF!! yes..the glory of the unfettered, unregulated free-market...throwing millions out of work and into social upheavel and misery while enriching the pockets of a tiny few. Sounds like fuedalism to me.
marcostar57 2 years ago
free unregulated markets create prosperity for all, any notion otherwise is shear bullshit. big government socialism always leads to a severe loss of liberties and always fails.
to much government intervention is what caused all of the economic problems we have today

@mattgeb84
> i think Harding was one of the best presidents ever, ...despite the constant demands coming from his treasury secretary (Herbert Hover) to intervene,
Agree with you, but correction: Hoover was Harding's commerce secretary, Andrew Mellon was Treasury secretary. Mellon studied Wilson's disastrous progressive taxation and concluded, long before Arthur Laffer (of Laffer curve fame, he influenced Reagan's supply-side economics) that high marginal tax rates create falling tax revenues.

Harding was definitely our most underrated president.

That title undoubtably goes to his predesesser Woodrow Wilson.
urntcookin045 2 years ago 2
