I am a 73 yo bassist. He is doing both pizz (plucking) & arco (using bow). He holds the bow while plucking then quickly SWITCHES to bow - that ain't easy. Also, the reason it "sounds" like bowing while piz is he uses sustain. Listen very closely and you can tel the diference between piz & arco. As far as I can tell, the bass is not amped but pure acoustic. When played this way, volumne depends on how hard the strings are plucked or the bow presure plus speed.

The recording appears authentic. Perhaps they dubbed in bass afterwards.

Looks like he's plucking the bass with his fingers at about 1:13 but the recording has him using a bow. At 1:19 he's using the bow.
