I'm an 18 year old, girl, who REALLY wants to go into the Coast Guard as a rescue swimmer. My eyes get REALLY irritated when stuff gets in them and the only thing holding me back from calling a recruiter is the pepper spraying. My dad was in the Coast Guard (rescue swimmer) and he encourages me to join but he, fortunately, did not have to get pepper sprayed back then. Can someone just tell me it's worth it? I guess I just need to hear it is worth it from someone with OC experience.

In Canada we never used to pack guns until you guys insisted, we just used to save people, put the bouys in place and serve the lights, still, the best guys at sea.

I am a 18 year old English Marine Engineer Student on my 2nd year at college here in the UK. I am planning on staying at college for a 3rd year. I would really like a career in the USCG. Is there many foreign worker's in the USCG and what are the chances of me getting a place?
You should apply for US Citizenship, but before you do that you should continue on your college journey or transfer to a US University/college for a bachelors degree. Then you can go to officer's candidate school, where you can become an officer.

In 1997 the US Coast Guard created DOG (Deployable Operations Group) mad up of tactical MSST and PSU units who deploy all over the world protecting US ships and ports. Our teams have captured prisoners on Iraqi oil wells and we lost one boat and a sailor in Iraq. We also have law enforcement authority in international waters, federal waters and officers have LE authority across the entire country.
@lietzke The USCG also gets in more firefights during peace time than any other branch. On top of all this we are the best Search and Rescue organization in the country and save countless lives each year. We do a better job protecting our borders, intercepting illegals and drugs, than any National Guard unit. We also help train specialized Navy Units and I can assure you that when it's to rough for the US Navy to be out, the USCG will be manning the ships and heading to sea!

To become a pilot, you can either enlist right after school and go to flight school a little bit down the road or you can go to the Coast Guard Academy, come out as an officer and then flight school, or after college you can enroll in Officer Candidate school and then flight school

I am a 18 year old English Marine Engineer Student on my 2nd year at college here in the UK. I am planning on staying at college for a 3rd year. I would really like a career in the USCG. Is there many foreign worker's in the USCG and what are the chances of me getting a place?

You should apply for US Citizenship, but before you do that you should continue on your college journey or transfer to a US University/college for a bachelors degree. Then you can go to officer's candidate school, where you can become an officer.

With all due respect Wannabeyasee, You would be much better off joining the actual military. @lietzke You need to educate yourself sir. In 1997 the US Coast Guard created DOG (Deployable Operations Group) mad up of tactical MSST and PSU units who deploy all over the world protecting US ships and ports. Our teams have captured prisoners on Iraqi oil wells and we lost one boat and a sailor in Iraq. We also have law enforcement authority in international waters, federal waters and officers have LE authority across the entire country.

@lietzke The USCG also gets in more firefights during peace time than any other branch. On top of all this we are the best Search and Rescue organization in the country and save countless lives each year. We do a better job protecting our borders, intercepting illegals and drugs, than any National Guard unit. We also help train specialized Navy Units and I can assure you that when it's to rough for the US Navy to be out, the USCG will be manning the ships and heading to sea!

@lietzke I would like for you to tell that to my son who is a coastie, while he was doing CPR on the 3 year old that he rescued from a rip current who was already dead, you need to check out the Coast Guard before you open your mouth about things you know nothing about. You have no idea what these people do on a day to day basis. I hope one day when you need a rescue a coastie is there to save you, because he will not matter what he thinks of you.

Recently a marine helicopter was shot down. Thank god the coast guard or as you call them the "boyscouts" were there to save them. Do you know that there are members of the coast guard in Iraq. The "boyscouts" have also stopped terrorists from entering the US. You clearly know nothing about the USCG.

Yes, the USCG are the underdogs, But I'd like to see what the navy, marines, army, or air force do what they do on their budget. And its HITRON team is the best sniper team in the world i dont care what any1 says. they shoot out an engine transmition from a go fast boat serpentining from 300+ yards on a helicopter traveling at 40 knots. To become a pilot, you can either enlist right after school and go to flight school a little bit down the road or you can go to the Coast Guard Academy, come out as an officer and then flight school, or after college you can enroll in Officer Candidate school and then flight school

My Grandfather died as a USCG vet and I sank his ashes where he served on the east coast... from that day on I always knew what I wanted to do. I have never been more determined to anything like this in my entire life... Whenever I tell people in my school about the Coast Guard, all they say is that they are just a bunch of pussy life guards without even knowing why I want to do this. actually men and women in the coast guard do get deployed i was in africa not to long ago for 6 months also its about saving lives and lots of them require more practice and knowledge to do rather than having to shoot a gun which we are trained for as well.

search and rescue motto is "you have to go out but you dont have to come back" so what do you think if they die or not? ever seen the movie the perfect storm? that was based off actual events. an entire helicopter crew went after the fishing vessel that was in the middle of 3 HUGE CONVERGING STORMS, NOT BECAUSE IT WAS POSSIBLE, IN FACT IT WAS A SUICIDE MISSION. BUT BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO. someone like you will never have the balls to join so keep typing in your warm house...fag

the coast guard is one of those branches with multi-missions. before 9/11 we where mostly search and rescue and a little bit of law enforcement and now we do a lot of port security and stuff like that so yeah we do protect america@simplyskilled

They are underrated because they don't fight war,but it probably is more fun than a infantry and other MOS's,in my opinion not going to war is good.
