I always thought Baboo was a Joe Besser impression... But it turns out he actually WAS voiced by Joe Besser! And the "Master"? MARK HAMMIL! No idea he was doing voice work back then.
As previously noted, Rumiko Takahashi was inspired to create "Urusei Yatsura" from watching shows like "I DREAM OF JEANNIE" and "BEWITCHED" in her youth (in fact, in one manga story adapted for TV, Lum appears to Ataru as a genie, looking very similar to the animated "Jeannie").
The animated "Jeannie" was a different character than her live-action counterpart, 'ryoko'. For one thing, THIS "Jeannie" is a teenager. Second, she has RED hair. And third, her ponytail is the catalyst for her magical abilities, rather than the original "Jeannie" blinking her eyes. And if there were any similarities to "Ah My Goddess!", 'Guciom', it's probable the creators of that manga/TV show were inspired by Norse mythology AND "Jeannie".
... and Joe Besser had the kind of voice that was perfect for a "bumbling sidekick" like Babu {giant earrings and all}. Mark Hamill had the ability to sound like a "typical" male teen- and Bob Hastings had played "Archie Andrews" on radio in the late '40s through the early '50s, so he could sound like a "teen sidekick" as well.
There couldn't BE any overt "sexual situations" because this was supposed to be a children's cartoon (no more than a typical "ARCHIE" cartoon, although in the comic books, there were no objections to, say, Betty and Veronica looking as "sexy" as possible without "pushing the envelope"). So, the only "sexy" thing about the teenage Jeannie was her appearance. Julie McWhirter (an impressionist now married to Rick Dees) was her voice because she could sound like a teenaged Barbara Eden...
The first time I thought of this cartoon again I remembered Flintstones voice saying, that Jeanie is cute and "Yapple Dapple" I remembered the teenage master Cory now. Oh now I remember the power in her pony tail. Barbara Eden never had that problem. LOL
@youtoubakias You're right. This is not exactly the same as the live Jeanie. The fat Jeanie that says "Yapple Dapple" was never live. And the cartoon Jeanie didn't have a vicious twin sister. And the cartoon Jeanie's pony tail swirled when she did magic so it was more flamboyant than the nod. Her Jeanie power was in her pony tail. So if it got cut she lost her power. Kind of a Samson thing going there. Barbara Eden never had that problem. LOL
@mrgears You're correct! It is the voice of Joe Besser who replaced Curly and Shemp. Curly replaced Shemp. Then, Shemp replaced Curly after Curly developed health problems.
I never saw this show, but when I was in kindergarten, I saw the episode of Scooy Doo where these characters made an appearance, at which point Jeannie became my 1st animated crush. I even tried to get my Mom to take a photograph of the TV, but I had a hard time explaining why I wanted a picture of this girl.
This Hanna-Barbera cartoon ran for one season as part of CBS' Saturday Morning schedule from 1973 until 1974. This was based on the live-action prime time sitcom
"I Dream of Jeannie". But in this version,Jeannie is a innocent,wild-eyed mischievous teenager who gets into more trouble than ever.
@rayssonation And also ran as part of Fred Flintstone and Friends just a short time after that which featured I do believe an animated space adventure of the Partridge Family.
That's because the "Magical Girlfriend" genre, which "Ah My Goddess" belongs to, was heavily influenced by "Bewitched" and "I Dream of Jeannie", both shows being very popular in Japan back in the 60s.
@Guciom it is very similar to "Ah My Godess!".... yes.... but I don't think they meant it to be. (Unlike the Simba vs. Kimba thing with Disney) I loved this series when I was a kid.... I had no idea that was Mark Hamill in the cast - Awesome!
@Guciom You're kidding, right? This show was done as a response to 'I Dream of Jeannie' (and with great reluctance by Hanna-Barbera, who wasn't into plagirism but needed the business).
@JMFabianoRPL , Considering The animation intro on Barbara Eden's own TV show ( I Dream of Jeannie) looks like her. which this cartoon is based off of. I don't think it's a problem with her not wanting her likeness animated.
but who knows why it doesn't look like her in this cartoon.
I actually watched this when I was younger. Not when it was new, I wasn't born, but when Cartoon Network showed classics. You know, when Cartoon Network was good and didn't have live action shows..
One of the producers was like "Okay, so we do I Dream Of Jeanie except with a teenage surfer kid. Great concept! But where's the part for my son? He needs a summer job, dammit!"
@MissInvisible11 Not exactly. It was produced by Hanna-Barbera in association with Screen Gems, who also produced the "I Dream of Jeannie" series. It was intentionally created to be loosely based on the orig. series to help draw in an audience. You could see it as a 70's version of cartoon reboot of the earlier show maybe or simply a spinoff perhaps since IDoJ went off the air in 1970 and this toon coming out in '73.
@SardaukarPrime , the cartoon was based of the TV show I Dream Of Jeanie. the character Corry Anders was voiced by Mark Hamill. he did the cartoon before he appeared in Star Wars. the cartoon came out in 1973.
kianatehrani @stratman123 : Christ, I believed it for the first two lines..<<< lol --- dudes, its the 70s, LOL, they were "HIGHLY" creative then. ;) Not to mentioned every media was oversexed ... I wished I lived in the 70s.
The role of Babu was voice by Joe Besser-one of the Three Stooges and also from the 1960's sitcom The Joey Bishop Show. The cartoon version of "Jeannie" came some three years after the original prime-time version of "I Dream of Jeannie" went off the air. This Hanna-Barbera cartoon was basically the same formula, with Jeannie as a rebellious teenager and Cory as her teen master.
The surfer guy (her 'master') was Mark Hamill. He managed to get into starring roles in major movies a few years later, and then a decade after that he was back to doing cartoons. I love a career with symmetry.
I remember watching this show when I was a kid. The thing I remember most about the show is that the source of Jeannie's magical powers is her pony tail. In one episode, Jeannie's pony tail is cut off and she loses her powers, similar to Wonder Woman losing her powers when her magic belt is removed on "The New, Original Wonder Woman".
Mark Hamill's such an underrated actor/voice actor. He got a whole new career after Star Wars doing voices for both Hanna-Barbera (which was actually pre and post Star Wars days) AND Warner Bros., with his most famed voice over the years as The Joker in Batman the Animated Series and Justice League.
@stratman123 After reading, rare little known second verse, I have come to the conclusion that you have the intellect of a gorilla with a learning disability.
Considering the fact that my comment is the highest rated for the clip and is nearly six times as popular as the 2nd ranked comment, most would tend to disagree with you. If you would care to compose an even rarer third verse, I would be glad to critique it for you. Something tells me you are incapable. I've come to the conclusion that you have the sense of humor of burn unit patient.
Too bad Columbia Pictures Corporation owns this show and won't allow Cartoon Network or Boomerang to show this without approval. The same deal with the Partridge Family cartoon.
"Jeannie" and "Partridge Family 2200 AD" cartoons were shown here in Brazil until 2005 on the old Boomerang network, unfortunatelly, we don't have no longer the classic Boomerang here.
You know, the only mention of Jeannie I'd ever heard of or even seen was on the "Scooby-Doo Meets Jeannie" hour-long movie. I didn't know she'd had her own cartoon. Thanks for uploading this.
I thought Corey was hot, but I knew when I grew up, I'd be the kind of guy that got Henry instead of Corey (David instead of Ricky, Chip instead of Robby, Smitty instead of Jeff, ad infinitum). Hated Babu..."and Junior Genie, Babu!"....? Like any of us cared! I always hated watching his fatness appear in 3 separate fat, elephantine parts! And "Junior"? That fat, green turd! I still think what a crummy third wheel he was to this cartoon. It totally ruined it.
Actually, '19Chuck', Fred Silverman {CBS' chief programmer for prime-time AND Saturday mornings} wanted to adapt some classic "fantasy" comedies of the '60s for his 1973-'74 schedule: Filmation gave him "MY FAVORITE MARTIANS", and Hanna-Barbera produced "{Teen}JEANNIE", which became the #1new show on Saturdays that fall. To generate interest for the new series, Silverman had "Jeannie" and "Babu" guest star on "THE NEW SCOOBY-DOO MOVIES" about a week after it premiered in September 1973...
From what I remember, Jeannie first started out as a guest apperance on The New Scooby-Doo Movies in 1972, and the following year, was given her own series. Have you realized how she gets so jealous when Corey goes out with another girl? She was just begging for his affection even though he was just a teenager.
There was a cartoon from the old I dream of genie cartoon? why wasn't there a Bewitched cartoon? Elizabeth Montgomery provide a voice as herself/Samantha the witch on 1 Flinstones episode.
I haven't seen this since I was a kid. OMG! Thanks for posting this. It was one of my favorite cartoons ever!

@stratman123 After reading, rare little known second verse, I have come to the conclusion that you have the intellect of a gorilla with a learning disability.

@smichael61

GRAPPLE DAPPLE
When Newton saw an apple fall, he found
In that slight startle from his contemplation
'Tis said (for I'll not answer above ground
For any sage's creed or calculation)
A mode of proving that the earth turn'd round
In a most natural whirl, called "gravitation;"
And this is the sole mortal who could grapple,
Since Adam, with a fall or with an apple.

One of the best Hanna Barbera cartoons!

Too bad Columbia Pictures Corporation owns this show and won't allow Cartoon Network or Boomerang to show this without approval. The same deal with the Partridge Family cartoon.
Rlotpir1972 3 years ago

I agree. Babu is too much like Joe Besser when he worked with the Three Stooges between 1956 and 1958.

Yapple dapple became the rallying cry for a whole generation of overweight, fez-wearing, hummus-eating gay youth. You're welcome, Matt Groening.

To generate interest for the new series, Silverman had "Jeannie" and "Babu" guest star on "THE NEW SCOOBY-DOO MOVIES" about a week after it premiered in September 1973...
fromthesidelines 3 years ago
From what I remember, Jeannie first started out as a guest apperance on The New Scooby-Doo Movies in 1972, and the following year, was given her own series. Have you realized how she gets so jealous when Corey goes out with another girl? She was just begging for his affection even though he was just a teenager.

There was a cartoon from the old I dream of genie cartoon? why wasn't there a Bewitched cartoon? Elizabeth Montgomery provide a voice as herself/Samantha the witch on 1 Flinstones episode.
