  • The San Francisco Bay / Golden Gate area is not "shark infested". It was rumored to be shark infested in an attempt to keep the prisoners at Alcatraz island from attempting to swimming to the city. Alcatraz is of course non-operational now. There is no need to continue the myth that the Bay's waters are "shark infested". They indeed are not. People surf under the bridge and outside the golden gate, windsurf, kiteboard, and even swim in the bay all year round with no shark attacks.

  • (09-19) 20:12 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A windsurfer was found dead in the open ocean today about 2 1/2 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge, authorities said.

    A Coast Guard boat found him in the water, unresponsive, around 6:18 p.m. and pulled him on board, Pichette said. Coast Guard officials performed CPR but were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead by paramedics at the Coast Guard's Golden Gate Station.
