@triplebettslord thurston is a fucking joke of a player...yeah, he can throw a pass, but then again, so can EVERY player to ever play league. he can kick- so can most players, and he can't defend at all, he's like a fucking turnstile, just walk straight through, he can't even manage to get in peoples way, he just steps aside and graps with fingertips like a fucking touch player. johns was the only halfback to defend in the middle, everyone else defends on the edges. he was all round much better

@honan91 Agreed! He does lack the defensive composure of Andrew Johns. Andrew Johns was a great defender and in fact, very rarely was he beaten. I remember McFadden beat him with a beautiful step once, but I can't remember any other instances where he was beaten with any kind of ease. I don't think any modern halfbacks compare to Johns yet. I must say though, Kirt Gidley (though not a halfback) has really improved since Johns' retirement.

@triplebettslord yeah exactly. no current halfback, and very few past ones compare to his defence...and the game is the way it is today because of johns...things like the banana kick and a few other tricks were invented by johns, as well as a lot of now 'standard' ball plays, were never previously seen before johns...and i fully agree about kurt...i couldn't stand kurt in his early years, but he had to step up after johns, so i think that helped him improve to the player he is.

@MaskOfSanity9 He won one with the Bulldogs, but I don't think Steve Folkes liked him much, and only ever used him as a utility off the bench. I reckon a lot of people have just forgotten that he played with them. It would always have been a tough break to replace Sherwin as the number 1 halfback, since no-one wants to replace a good player with one who is unproven.

I'm a Bulldogs fan but I'm glad he got to go to the Cowboys and have a good career.
